'In Less than Three Years’ : The cliché of US sponsored “democracy” to
justify invasion and mass murder
Ghali Hassan, Globalresearch.ca
As the pretexts to justify the illegal war of aggression against Iraq
started to collapse one after the other, the Bush Administration, its
vassals and the mass media adopted the cliché of "democracy" to justify the
invasion and the mass murder of hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqi
men, women and children. However, from the outset of the invasion and
occupation of Iraq, the ! U.S. objective was conspicuous; to destroy Iraq,
install a puppet government and pillage the nation’s resources. In less
than three years, the nation has gone from a safe and functioning nation to
brutally occupied and chaotic nation. The health care services have
collapsed. Acute malnutrition among Iraqi children between the ages of six
months and 5 years has increased from 4% before the invasion to 7.7%. In
other words, despite the 13-years long genocidal sanctions, Iraqi children
were living much better (by 3.7%) under the regime of Saddam Hussein than
under the tyranny of George W. Bush (...) In less than three years, one of
the best education systems in the region has deteriorated. Schools have
been taken over and transformed into military bases to accommodate the
occupying forces...

TCR Editorial February 1, 2006
Impeach President Bush
War of Aggression Indictment
TCR
...President George W. Bush, Vice President Richard B. Cheney, Secretary of
State Condoleezza Rice, Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld, and
Attorney General Alberto Gonzales have committed violations and subversions
of the Constitution of the United States of America in an attempt to carry
out with impunity crimes against peace and humanity and war crimes and
deprivations of the civil rights of the people of! the United States and
other nations, by assuming powers of an imperial executive unaccountable to
law and usurping powers of the Congress, the Judiciary and those reserved
to the people of the United States, by the following acts: 1) Seizing power
to wage wars of aggression in defiance of the U.S. Constitution, the U.N.
Charter and the rule of law; carrying out a massive assault on and
occupation of Iraq, a country that was not threatening the United States,
resulting in the death and maiming of over one hundred thousand Iraqis, and
thousands of U.S. G.I.s. 2) Lying to the people of the U.S., to Congress,
and to the U.N., providing false and deceptive rationales for war...

Must Israel always win?
Xymphora
I'm getting a little tired about reading that every decision the
Palestinians make somehow benefits the Israeli government. Vote for the PA?
Benefits Israel. Vote for Hamas? Benefits Israel. Fight back? Suicide bomb?
Benefits Israel. Don't fight back? Benefits Israel. This is all an Israeli
trick to manipulate the Palestinians into giving up. The Israeli plan is to
demoralize the Palestinians into thinking that resistance against ethnic
cleansing is futile (the current specific ta! rgeting of Palestinian
children by the IDF is also part of that program)...

Bush's 'Gulf Of Tonkin' Underlines Criminal Desperation For War
Paul Joseph Watson & Alex Jones, Prison Planet.com
This week's revelations that George W. Bush and Tony Blair considered
staging a war provocation by painting a US spy plane in UN colors and
flying it over Iraq, in the hope that Saddam would order it shot down,
illustrates a desperate depth of criminality only rivaled by previous
notorious historical examples. Philippe Sands, a QC and professor of
international law at University College, London, unea! rthed documents that
shadow even the Downing Street memo in terms of direct and unequivocal
confirmation that the war was deliberate and planned from the very start
and that any pretext to garner international support for it would be
considered and utilized. The US government considered staging an act of
provocation that would fool the world into supporting an unpopular war.
This tactic is by no means new...

IMPEACH
This Far and No Further
It is a sobering decision for the American citizenry to consider impeaching
a sitting president. It bespeaks of crimes committed by a president that
cannot be addressed in any lesser manner, and represents a frightening
watershed moment in our history. It is not a decision to be regarded
lightly. Americans who love their freedom and their democratic way of life
face such a decision today. We have placed in office a man who has
repeatedly demonstrated his contempt for American democ! racy and the rule
of law under the Constitution. While some of this president's decisions
have been subject to intense debate over their legality, we have now
learned that this president has indisputably broken the law in such a
manner that makes impeachment a necessity...

GI Special 4B3: If Everyone Lost A Brother - February 4, 2006
Thomas F. Barton
...Much of the left press and internet have been full of propaganda kissing
the ass of this or that politician who is packaged and sold as being
"against the war." Kucinich and Murtha are a couple of examples, although
both want more dead U.S. troops and more dead Iraqis, opposing as they both
do the immediate withdrawal of all U.S. troops from Iraq. Now Bush wants
more Imperial death money. We’ll see if anybody in Congress has the !
courage and common decency to vote no: not another day, not another dime,
not another life. The fake "anti-war" politicians for the Empire will spew
their usual mealy mouth excuses for voting the money to keep the war going.
And their political apologists will spew their usual mealy mouth excuses
for defending them, featuring the famous whine: "X isn’t as bad as Bush."
The killers and their accomplices have one mission: to suck you into buying
the con. Fuck 'em. Reach out to the troops. They can stop the war. They
stopped Vietnam, they can do it again...

Sunni leader says Interior Ministry killed 24 Sunnis in Baghdad
Khaleej Times
The bodies of 24 Sunni Arabs found on Friday to the west of Baghdad were
killed "in cold blood" by forces from the Interior Ministry, Secretary
General of the Sunni Iraqi National Dialogue Council Khalaf Al Olayan told
a press conference on Saturday. "Special forces (maghaweer) from the
Interior Ministry raided Al Aqsa mosque in Taji during evening prayers and
shot inside the mosque unjustifiably," Al Olayan said...

What Would Jesus Do?
Remi Kanazi
Picture this: A cartoon of Jesus, with his pants down, smiling, raping a
little boy. The caption above it reads "Got Catholicism?" Or how about a
picture of a Rabbi with blood dripping from his mouth after bludgeoning a
small Palestinian boy with a knife shaped like the Star of David—the
caption reads "The Devil’s Chosen Ones." I wonder if people around the
world would just consider this free speech? Of course, some would condone
or agree with one, two or all three, while others w! ould say "it’s free
speech," although they "find it offensive and in poor taste"...

The Story of How Bush Went Into Iraq, As Told by the British
Think Progress
...This most-recent memo is just the latest in a series of official British
government documents that have revealed shocking information about how Bush
misled the nation into Iraq (see the original Downing Street Memo and the
British Briefing Papers revealed previously by ThinkProgress). There are
two things all these memos share in common: 1) none of the memos’ validity
has been disputed, and 2) the U.S. media has been slow to cover ever! y
single one of them. In fact, while reputable British papers such as the
Guardian, the Independent, and the Financial Times have already reported on
the most recent memo, no American newspaper has...

European media publish anti-Muslim cartoons: An ugly and calculated provocation
World Socialist Web Site
The World Socialist Web Site unequivocally condemns the publication by a
series of European newspapers of defamatory cartoons depicting the Prophet
Muhammad as a terrorist and killer. These crude caricatures, intended to
insult and incite Muslim sensibilities, are a political provocation. Their
publication, initially by a right-wing Danish newspaper with historical
ties to German and Italian fascism, was calcu! lated to fuel anti-Muslim
and anti-immigrant sentiment. The decision of the right-wing Danish
government to defend the newspaper that initially published the cartoons,
and of newspapers in Norway, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Belgium, the
Netherlands, Switzerland, Iceland and Hungary, both conservative and
liberal, to reprint them has nothing to do with freedom of the press or the
defense of secularism. Such claims make a mockery of these democratic
principles...

Bush approved multi-agency program to spy on Americans
DOUG THOMPSON, Capitol Hill Blue
Although President Bush publicly claims he has limited spying on Americans
by the National Security Agency to overseas phone calls involving members
of al-Qaeda, privately he has authorized a massive multi-agency domestic
surveillance operation that routinely pries into the lives of millions of
Americans who have no involvement in terrorism or represent no threat to
the security of the United States. Through executive orders o! r – more
often – clandestine powers that he believes he possesses as a "wartime
President," Bush has ordered the Pentagon, FBI, NSA and CIA to expand
domestic spying operations to levels never before seen by professional
operations...

Cindy Sheehan: Capitol Police Apology is "Crock of Horse Manure"
Cindy Sheehan, BUZZFLASH
Dear Friends, I just saw the below "apology" on MichaelMoore.com...thanks
Eric! This is the biggest crock of horse manure ever. Everyone is saying
how "wonderful" it is that they apologized to me. Look at a few things they
said: My "initial" conduct wasn't enough to warrant me getting arrested.
None of my conduct was. I didn't yell at the officer, or call anyone an
"idiot" like Mrs. Young did. Secondly, it states the Mrs. Y! oung wasn't
arrested because she didn't "return to the gallery." Why did they arrest
me? They didn't even give me the opportunity to leave the gallery...

Iraqi Resistance Report for events of Friday, 3 February 2006
Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member, editorial board,
the Free Arab Voice
In a dispatch posted at 10:25am Mecca time Friday morning, Mafkarat
al-Islam reported that Iraqi Resistance fighters attacked a US military
patrol on 40 Street in the city of al-Fallujah, some 60km west of Baghdad.
The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported local eyewitnesses as
saying that the attack began when an Iraqi Resistance sharpshooter killed
on! e US soldier in a US patrol on 40 Street in the city. The patrol came
to a halt in order to pick up and evacuate the body of the dead man. At
that point, Resistance fighters armed with light and medium weapons and
pipe rockets attacked the patrol, disabling a Humvee and killing one more
US soldier and wounding two more of them...

Kenneth Timmerman's Iranian "Democracy" and the "Intelligence" Summit
Ron Jacobs
...The essence of the story was that a group that calls itself the
Foundation for Democracy in Iran (FDI) had received word from unnamed
sources in Iran that the Iranian Air Force is moving its Shabab missiles
onto mobile platforms and that this meant that they were preparing to test
a nuclear device by March 20, 2006. How one concludes that the movement of
the missiles to portable platforms is a prelude to a nuclear test and not
ju! st a defensive move in light of the growing threat of a military attack
on Iran is not stated. The aspect of the story that interested me, however,
was not the dubious conclusion that Iran had a nuclear device that was
test-ready (mostly because no other source seems to believe that this is
true), but the nature of the source for the story. What is the Foundation
for Democracy in Iran? Who funds them?...

Sunni Chiefs Raise Warnings of Civil War
ROBERT H. REID
Sunni politicians warned of civil war Saturday after the bullet-riddled
bodies of 14 Sunni Arab men were found in Baghdad _ apparently the latest
victims of sectarian death squads. One person was killed and 12 injured
when a mortar shell exploded near a Shiite mosque north of the capital.
Sunni leaders claimed the 14 men were seized last week by Shiite-led
security forces...

IRAQ'S CIVIL WAR HAS COST $3,000 PER U.S. FAMILY-- SO FAR
Richard Reeves, Reuters
God forbid critics of the war on Iraq should compare it with the war in
Vietnam. But perhaps it is worth mentioning that the "liberation" of Iraq
is now costing more each month than the preservation of the Republic of
South Vietnam did more than 30 years ago. As the admitted direct cost of
the war reached $250 billion last week -- and the White House asked for
$120 billion more on Thursday -- new analyses estimate that the invasion !
of Iraq could end up costing $2 trillion before it is over...

Al-Jazeera Succeeding Under Pressure
Dahr Jamail
Its foreign bureaus were bombed by U.S. warplanes, it is banned from
reporting from four Middle East countries - and Al-Jazeera is only growing
in popularity. An interesting, and sometimes tragic path has led to the
success of Al-Jazeera since its launch in November 1996. Its difficulties
have also been its success; the ban from reporting in Iraq, Iran, Saudi
Arabia and Algeria has done nothing to reduce a fierce loyalty from more
than 40 million viewers. The Al-Ja! zeera bureau in Afghanistan was bombed
by U.S. warplanes in 2001. During the invasion of Iraq, U.S. tanks shelled
Al-Jazeera journalists in a Basra hotel. Shortly after, its office in
Baghdad was hit by a missile from a U.S. warplane; correspondent Tareq
Ayoub was killed. Al-Jazeera reporters have been detained by U.S. forces
and placed in prisons in Iraq and Guantanamo Bay in Cuba...

No comment necessary: the cost of the war
pdq, Daily Kos
"There's a lot of money to pay for this that doesn't have to be U.S.
taxpayer money, and it starts with the assets of the Iraqi people...We're
dealing with a country that can really finance its own reconstruction, and
relatively soon." Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz, House Committee
on Appropriations Hearing 3/27/03 (...) LA Times 2/3/06 WASHINGTON -- The
White House said Thursday that it planned to ask Congress for an additi!
onal $70 billion to pay for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan...The
additional spending, along with other war funds the Bush administration
will seek separately in its regular budget next week, would push the price
tag for combat and nation-building since Sept. 11, 2001, to nearly half a
trillion dollars -- approaching the cost of the 13-year-long Vietnam War...

State of the Union: Disaster
Jack Hughes, Online Journal
President Bush predictably delivered his laundry list of bromides,
distortions and outright lies during his one constitutionally mandated
report to Congress; the State of the Union address. Predictably, the
partisan Republican majority in Congress interrupted his speech with
hysterical applause and standing ovations on occasions too numerous to
count. Predictably, news analysts parsed the speech afterwards, with the
inevitable sophists reporting dutifully t! hat "the president hit a home
run" and other metaphors for brilliant success. But also predictably, not
one of the nation’s paid pundits in our mainstream media -- the "watchdogs
for our democracy" and the "guardians of truth" -- would state the obvious
fact: the state of our Union is nothing short of disastrous...
