TARIQ AZIZ HAS LITTLE TIME LEFT
Malcom Lagauche
...Aziz has a heart problem that, for years, was kept benign by medication.
When he was imprisoned, his family begged the U.S. to allow him to take his
medication. From the sources I have read over the past couple of years,
this request was denied and his condition slowly became worse, culminating
in his current condition. About six months ago, his family put out a
worldwide appeal for the world to take heed to the peril of Aziz. They
mentioned that they were unable! to communicate with him and did not know
his whereabouts or his state of health. Nobody stepped forward. The reason
that Taqiz Aziz was imprisoned was an allegation of mass murder. After
almost three years, the charge was dropped because of lack of evidence.
Instead of freeing Aziz, a new charge of embezzlement of public funds came
forth, therefore assuring that Aziz will die in prison...

The Countdown to War with Iran
Mike Whitney
Iran must defend itself if it is attacked by the United States or Israel.
Defending one’s country against unprovoked aggression is sanctioned under
international law and is a requirement of true leadership. We would expect
no different if either the United States or Israel was attacked. The Sharon
and Bush administrations’ have done an admirable job of poisoning public
opinion against Iran; interpreting President Ahmadinejad’s comments as a
potential danger to Israel’s ! welfare. But such statements, however
offensive, are commonplace in the Middle East and cannot be construed as a
credible threat. The media has assumed its traditional role of defending
American and Israeli aggression against peaceful nations by providing ample
space for the spurious allegations of administration officials, right-wing
pundits, and disgruntled Iranian exiles, while carefully omitting the
relevant facts in Iran’s defense. There is no evidence that Iran has a
nuclear weapons program. None...

Iraqi resistance vs the CIA's Al-Qaida operations
Truth About Iraqis
On this blog I have reiterated two things: 1) The Iraqi Resistance is NOT
Al-Qaida and therefore could not be branded and labeled in the thick brush
of "insurgency". 2) The Iraqi Resistance has been fighting ongoing
ideological and military battles with Al-Qaida since October 2004. When
Al-Qaida and its head criminal first surfaced in Iraq, Iraqis quickly said
it was an effort to undermine the legitimacy of the Iraqi Resistance.
Iraqis attribute! d this to a foreign effort, an effort funded and
organized outside Iraq. Some said it was the CIA, some said the US
military...

Gag Reflex
Chris Floyd
If President George W. Bush shows no qualms about violating the
217-year-old U.S. Constitution or the 791-year-old Magna Carta, why should
we be surprised to find that he is now violating the 2,400-year-old
Hippocratic Oath? And yet this week's revelation of how U.S. doctors are
force-feeding captives on hunger strike in Bush's concentration camp at
Guantanamo Bay still has the power to shock and sicken -- not just from the
savage act itself, but also for the wider moral defeat it represent! s:
another open embrace of raw brutality, another step in America's
accelerating plunge into vicious despotism...

“Freedom in action”
Dahr Jamail
Yesterday Mr. Bush warned U.S. citizens of more violence in Iraq…again. He
called it the "price of progress" as Iraq "moves toward democracy." In the
shady, smoke and mirror filled world of Mr. Bush where violence is progress
and Iraq inches ever closer to their elusive "democracy," truth remains
ever distant from the rhetoric of his speech writers. Mr. Bush referred to
"a good deal of political turmoil" in Iraq as "freedom in action." If only
reality matched his hallucinatory proj! ections…

Prime (Time) Evil
William Bowles
...Do the mad dogs actually intend to invade/bomb Iran or is it part of the
general 'softening up’ process needed to get us into the 'swing of things’,
in other words to get us to accept a state of perpetual war preparedness by
creating a never-ending supply of demons with which to terrorise us into
submission? It matters little which country it is, but we can be assured
that there will always be one that will fit the stereotype supplied
conveniently by the corporate press...

Iraqi Resistance Report for events of Thursday, 12 January 2006
Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member, editorial board,
the Free Arab Voice. ( http://www.freearabvoice.org )
...In a dispatch posted at 3:30pm Mecca time Thursday afternoon, Mafkarat
al-Islam reported that informed sources in an-Najaf, who asked not to be
named, had said that on 16 January, the day before the Islamic 'Id al-Adha
Festival the US-installed regime of "Prime Minister" Ibrahim al-Ja'fari had
conferred Iraqi citizenshi! p on the pro-American Iranian Shi'i religious
authority 'Ali as-Sistani. The citizenship order also applied to his
relatives as far as the third degree. The correspondent for Mafkarat
al-Islam reported the source as saying that the grant of citizenship
followed recent changes by the puppet regime in the Civil Status Laws
giving Iraqi citizenship to 250 Iranians who had come to Iraq following the
American invasion and married Iraqi women..

Speech by Hassan Jumaa at UK Stop The War Coalition International Peace
Conference
Hassan Jumaa Awad al Assadi
As you know, brothers and sisters, Iraqi oil reserves are considered the
world's second largest and that is why the war was launched against the
land of the two rivers. Allow me to say a few words about the vicious
onslaught that America and its allies launched against our beloved Iraq.
(...) We know, and everyone here knows, real American intentions. America
is fully prepared to annihilate the entire wo! rld for its interests, and
its interests lie in exerting control over Iraqi oil and putting this
wealth at its disposal.

Have You Forgotten?
Monica Benderman
Have you forgotten? We are people. Have you forgotten? There are feelings
inside. Have you forgotten? We are fighting for our lives. We are fighting
for the right to live in peace, as we choose. We are fighting to live by
what we believe, in the hope that others will be allowed the same
opportunity, even as they choose to live differently than what we have
chosen. Have you forgotten the purpose – while you fight so hard for the
cause? We gave more than you know to war. We gave! time, we gave life, we
gave freedom – all because we believed our country would respect the
sacrifice and appreciate the gift...

The Bush Who Cried Wolf
Robert Dreyfuss
The deteriorating international crisis over Iran is a direct result of the
Bush’s administration’s ham-handed and mendacious Iraq policy. Under normal
circumstances—that is, under any previous U.S. administration—the battle
over Iran’s pugnacious effort in pursuit of nuclear technology would be
amenable to a diplomatic solution. But, by insisting on a national security
strategy of pre-emptive war, by illegally and unilaterally invading Iraq on
false pretenses, and by hintin! g that the White House would tolerate an
Israeli strike on Iran’s nuclear plants, President Bush and Vice President
Cheney have made a successful diplomatic resolution of the Iran crisis
nearly impossible...

Another Raid Brings Further Alienation
Brian Conley and Isam Rashid
The Association of Muslim Scholars, a Sunni organisation that was created
in the aftermath of the Iraq invasion, was again targeted by the United
States military last Sunday. The raid on its mosque served only to alienate
Sunnis further. The Association of Muslim Scholars, now considered the
highest Sunni authority in Iraq, has been working to support those who have
lost their families, or the unemployed. It is also a strong critic of the
United ! States occupation...

Torture and Legal Accountability
Command Responsibility?
JEREMY BRECHER and BRENDAN SMITH, CounterPunch
A jury verdict in Memphis late last year caused little stir among the
general public, but it may have caught the attention of Dick Cheney, Donald
Rumsfeld, and other high officials of the Bush administration. The jury
found Colonel Nicolas Carranza, former Vice Minister of Defense of El
Salvador and now a U.S. citizen living in Memphis, responsible for
overseeing the torture and killing in that count! ry 25 years ago. (1)
Could similar charges be brought against high U.S. officials for the
actions of their subordinates in Abu Ghraib, Falluja, and Guantanamo?...

Stephen Lendman, VHeadline
... the threat posed by depleted uranium (DU) to all countries as a result
of the US use of it since 1991 in four wars and continues using it every
day in Iraq. The health affects on the US military now serving in Iraq will
likely prove devastating based on the already known severe affects it's had
on those forces that served in the Gulf war. (...) thousands of tons of DU
weapons have been used over the past 15 y! ears in Iraq, Afghanistan and
Yugoslavia/Kosovo. (...) DU has the potential to destroy all planetary life.

The Islamic Threat in Iraq
Robert Dreyfus
It’s impossible not to see the belligerent attitude of Abdel Aziz al-Hakim,
the leader of the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq, as
unconnected from the growing U.S.-Iran conflict. SCIRI, which was created
by Iran and has strong backing from Teheran, is the most powerful force in
the new Iraq. And yesterday its leader, Hakim, proclaimed that the ruling
Shiite religious coalition would not allow any modifications to the
divisive Iraqi constitution. It was,! of course, the decision to allow such
modifications by the new Iraqi "permanent" government that convinced some
Sunnis to participate in the Oct. 15 constitutional referendum and then the
Dec. 15 election. Now SCIRI has slammed that door shut...

TARIQ AZIZ CLOSE TO DEATH
Les Blough, Editor, Axis of Logic - AFP
The world will never forget Tareq Aziz, the wise and articulate Foreign
Minister of of Iraq for 20 years, prior to the U.S. invasion in 2003 (...).
He fulfilled his role with courage and grace against impossible odds. When
he saw the inevitable under the brute force of U.S. bombs, he turned
himself in. The U.S. has had him imprisoned in inhumane conditions in a dog
pen - 1 meter (3 feet) wide and 2 meters (6 feet) long. I'm not one easily
given to ! conspiracy theories but I cannot help but note the "convenience"
of Mr. Aziz' "cerebral embolism and heart problems". If they were ever to
bring him to trial and were he able to speak freely, his accusers would
surely be the ones tried and convicted of war crimes. We will always
remember his prescient words: "People say to me, you (the Iraqis) are not
the Vietnamese. You have no jungles and swamps to hide in. I reply, let our
cities be our swamps and our buildings our jungles." We watch as the
realization of his prophesy unfolds today...

EU Parliament to investigate CIA allegations

The European Parliament launched an investigation on Thursday into
allegations that the CIA used EU countries for the illegal transport and
detention of prisoners. At a meeting in Brussels, leaders of the
Parliament's seven political groups and assembly president Josep Borrell
voted in favor of setting up a temporary committee consisting of 46 members
to investigate the allegations. The inquiry will have no legal powers, but
the committee will rec! ommend what political action should be taken

From SA dog handlers to dogs of war in Iraq
Karen Breytenbach, IOL
Crucial police dog units countrywide are being decimated as handlers and
trainers are lured to high-paying jobs as private security contractors and
bodyguards in Iraq. (...) "Last year, only 30 dog handlers were trained
nationally instead of the benchmark of 60, because we've lost so many
instructors. This isn't only bad for the force, it's really bad for society

Spurious attempt to tie Iran, Iraq to nuclear arms plot bypassed U.S.
intelligence channels
Larisa Alexandrovna, Raw Story
Several U.S. and foreign intelligence sources, along with investigators,
say an Iranian exile with ties to Iran-Contra peddled a bizarre tale of
stolen uranium to governments on both sides of the Atlantic in the spring
and summer of 2003. The story that was peddled -- which detailed how an
Iranian intelligence team infiltrated Iraq prior to the start of the war in
March of 2003, and stole enr! iched uranium to use in their own nuclear
weapons program -- was part of an attempt to implicate both countries in a
WMD plot. It later emerged that the Iranian exile was trying to collect
money for his tales, sources say.

General Asserts Right On Self-Incrimination In Iraq Abuse Cases
Josh White, Washington Post Staff Writer

scandal, this week invoked his right not to incriminate himself in
court-martial proceedings against two soldiers accused of using dogs to
intimidate captives at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq, according to lawyers
involved in the case. The move by Miller -- who once supervised the U.S.
detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and help! ed set up operations
at Abu Ghraib -- is the first time the general has given an indication that
he might have information that could implicate him in wrongdoing, according
