HUMANITARIAN IMPERIALISM
Interview with Jean Bricmont
By Joaquim Da Fonseca and Michel Collon
...Why is the reaction to the war by progressive Europeans so weak? J.B.
The ecologists, the Socialist left, the traditional Communist parties, the
Trotskyites and most of the NGOs have opposed the war very feebly. Their
positions have been undermined by the ideology of humanitarian intervention
and all serious references to socialism in their programme have been
abandoned. Part of this left has substit! uted the struggle for human
rights for its initial aims of social improvements or revolution. As it is
difficult for these movements to defend the war of the USA against
Yugoslavia and Iraq, they adopt the rather convenient position of "Neither,
nor". "Neither Bush nor Saddam": this enables them to avoid any criticism...

A Message from Cannon Fodder in Iraq
Cindy Sheehan, Daily Kos
This is from a friend of mine whose son is in the Army, stationed in Baghdad.
And the Peace Community is accused of not supporting our troops??? This is
fucking barbaric and we are letting this stuff continue in our names.
Excuse my language, but my friend almost became a Gold Star Mom on the
27th.... but for the grace of god or whatever, she didn't. Our government
is creating Gold Star Moms at a very rapid clip and the Iraqi people that
they are klling or turning into people who have to fight to survive is
obscene. What are we willing to do to stop the inhumanity and war crimes?...

Kurdistan: A Gangster State
Free Dr. Kamal Said Qadir!
Justin Raimondo
Dr. Kamal Said Qadir, also known as Kamal Berzenji, was kidnapped by the
agents of the Kurdish Democratic Party's intelligence unit, Parastin, on
Oct. 26, 2005, and jailed. His "crime": writing "insulting" articles about
Kurdish Democratic Party high mucky-muck and Kurdish Regional Government
(KRG) President Massoud Barzani. In short, he committed lese-majeste, i.e.,
Qadir wounded the dignity of the king. After a "trial" that lasted one h!
our, he was sentenced to 30 years in prison. This is what the "liberation"
of Iraq has accomplished...

Propaganda: More on Iraq
Baghdad Dweller
...1. I linked the article to the "Weekly Standard" [ Saddam's Terror
Training Camps] because they are the first who came up with the story, now
there are at least 16 newspapers published the same story none of them you
can call it "respectable" newspaper. 2- All the training camps they
mentioned (Samarra, Ramadi, and Salman Pak) exists before a long time (back
to the 70’s and 80’s) and used as Military training camps. 3- Salman Pak
training camp exists since 1980 c! onstructed with the help of the British
and has been well known to the American intelligence community for years.
Weapons inspectors visited the area several times and there are photos
dating back for years...

American liberators or American thieves?
Truth About Iraqis
...It is the reality of the US soldier - not a liberator, but an occupier,
a thief, coming into the homes of innocents on some far-fetched pretext
cooked up in Tel Aviv. To secure the Oil Ministry. To put their man Chalib
there so that he can continue robbing Iraqis in very much the same way he
robbed Jordanians in the late 80s, and early 90s. Iraqis now are obliged to
repay the kindness of the US soldier who rapes their daughters, massacres
their men, a! nd smolders their children - for freeing them. Now, we must
pay for Katrina, for the costs of the Laci Peterson trial, for the recall
of Chrysler cars, for the trade deficit (...) So, join me in thanking those
who sabotage the oil pipelines, prevent the flow of Iraqi wealth into the
hands of thieves...

Terror and Resistance
Ghali Hassan, Axis of Logic
Since the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq, there have been three elections and
one "transfer of sovereignty". However, the situation on the ground in Iraq
has further deteriorated. What have changed are the pretexts for ongoing
terror and occupation. The U.S. administration is using elections as
smokescreen to manipulate public opinion and legitimise the subjugation of
the Iraqi people to a colonial dictatorship. As the U.S. and its
collaborators failed to control Iraq! on the ground – due to a determined
Iraqi Resistance –, they turned to the air to rain their daily terror on
the Iraqi people. With the complete silence of the "international
community", U.S. warplanes are targeting population centres opposed to the
Occupation...

GI Special 4A3: Prisoners Against The War 3 - January 10, 2006
www.militaryproject.org
...If the release of "The Constitution in Crisis: The Downing Street
Minutes and Deception, Manipulation, Torture, Retribution, and Coverups in
the Iraq War" by Congressman John Conyers Jr., D-Mich., does not seem
dangerously similar to the release of the "Pentagon Papers" by
whistle-blower Daniel Ellsberg in 1971, which contributed to the ending of
the Vietnam War and the eventual downfall of President Nixon, I don't know
wha! t else can be so close to the truth finally coming out. We are
witnessing the beginning of the end of the Bush administration...

Osama and the odd Israelis
Xymphora
...The beneficiaries of September 11 were the Bush Administration itself,
the Pentagon and the military-industrial complex, various intelligence
agencies, and Israel. With every day of Bush misrule we learn of more
corruption and deception. Is it all that difficult to contemplate that the
whole Official Story of 9-11 is just another lie?...

Attack on Iran: A Looming Folly
William Rivers Pitt
The wires have been humming since before the New Year with reports that the
Bush administration is planning an attack on Iran. "The Bush administration
is preparing its NATO allies for a possible military strike against
suspected nuclear sites in Iran in the New Year, according to German media
reports, reinforcing similar earlier suggestions in the Turkish media,"
reported UPI on December 30th. "The Berlin daily Der Tagesspiegel this
week," continued UPI, "quote! d 'NATO intelligence sources' who claimed
that the NATO allies had been informed that the United States is currently
investigating all possibilities of bringing the mullah-led regime into
line, including military options. This 'all options are open' line has been
President George W Bush's publicly stated policy throughout the past 18
months." An examination of the ramifications of such an attack is
desperately in order...

Enough of his excuses: Blair must be impeached over Iraq
Michael Rose, The Guardian
...Parliament should therefore ascertain how far the prime minister did
evaluate intelligence regarding WMD and how he assessed the reliability of
the many sources that provided that intelligence. It should ask him what
corroborating evidence there was for his specific statement about WMD - and
why more use was not made of the UN inspectors on the ground in Iraq to
test the validity of that statement. It should inquire just how mu! ch he
discounted the mass of intelligence that came in from the Iraqi National
Congress - a body that had a vested interest in removing Saddam from power.
The list of possible questions is huge and would no doubt be usefully
expanded during any hearings. Mr Blair is an able barrister who should
relish the opportunity to put his side of the case. No one can undo the
decision to go to war. But the impeachment of Mr Blair is now something I
believe must happen if we are to rekindle interest in the democratic
process...

The bloodthirsty US democratic army excels in its crimes: Now raping babies
in Iraq!
Arab TV channels and media fear the US Freedom Army of Thugs to publish the
news!
Mafkarat al Islam. Translated by Abu Assur, Al-Moharer.net
Medical information in the Iraqi town of Hilla - 70 miles to the south of
Baghdad, ascertained today that the bloodthirsty US democratic army has
added another despicable new crime to its horrible register raping a nine
year old Iraqi child. The medical sources in Hilla indicated that on! this
Sunday the US occupation soldiers raided a primary school in the mentioned
town and kidnapped a little school child aged nine. Quoting a medical
source that declined to divulge his identity for obvious reasons, Mafkarat
al Islam correspondent reported that the little child body was found four
hours later unconscious and her face and legs bleeding...

Iraq's 'PBS' accused of sectarian slant
Shiite control of state-funded TV has critics worried about the
independence of Iraq's fledgling free press
Charles Levinson | Correspondent of The Christian Science Monitor
...Like much of the government in the new Iraq, Al Iraqiya is dominated by
Shiites, and critics like Osman say that Iraq's version of America's Public
Broadcasting Service (PBS) has simply become a propaganda tool for the
country's leading Shiite politicians. Al Iraqiya was meant to ! stand as a
model for a burgeoning independent press, but seems to have instead become
one more political spoil for its competing factions. It's not the only sign
that Iraq's independent media is in jeopardy. Last week a journalist in the
Kurdish city of Arbil was sentenced to 30 years in prison for articles he
wrote critical of Kurdish regional president Masoud Barzani. In the
southern city of Kut, two other journalists have been charged with defaming
police and the judiciary after criticizing provincial officials in a local
paper. If convicted, they face 10 years in prison and heavy fines...

IRAQ IN MINIATURE
Malcom Lagauche
Recently, reports surfaced about the Iraqi-Americans hired to be
translators for the U.S. forces in the illegally-occupied country.
Surprise, surprise. The conclusion was that many were not qualified in the
English language and that the contractors who were paid big bucks by the
U.S. government (actually U.S. taxpayers) were not supplying competent
individuals. No shit! If they had asked me, I could have saved the U.S.
government much money and embarrassment by telling them that ! they were
hiring people who could only speak broken English...

Author explores CIA connections to torture tactics
Barbara Wolff
A professor of history at UW-Madison has authored a book available this
month that explores evidence of a 50-year legacy of U.S.
government-sponsored forms of psychological torture (...) "The origins of
the Abu Ghraib scandal and the Guantanamo controversy can be traced very
directly to the 1950s, when the Central Intelligence Agency launched a
massive mind-control project that discovered psychological torture. This
proved an unheralded scientific b! reakthrough, indeed, the first real
revolution in five centuries in the cruel science of pain," McCoy says...

MEDIA ALERT: BAMBI JOURNALISM - THE ART OF PROFESSIONAL NAIVETY
Media Lens
...Returning to Iraq, the BBC's Middle East editor, Jeremy Bowen, notes
that the United States has been the biggest foreign player in the Middle
East for 50 years, but that Bush has created "a much more intimate
connection by going to war and occupying Iraq". "Intimate" is an
interesting adjective to describe the relationship between an imperial
superpower and its victims (...) But there is more (...) Bowen lists
alleged examples of democr! atisation in the region, before concluding:
"All this does not mean that the dreams that the Bush administration has
for the region are coming true." This is the key propaganda sentence: the
United States and Britain are driven by fundamentally benign motives in the
Middle East - by "dreams" of democracy, no less. Our governments invade
countries illegally, wage vast propaganda campaigns to deceive their own
populations, and kill and injure countless thousands of innocent civilians.
But somehow, at heart, they are striving to spread liberty, democracy and
the rights of man...

Iraqi Resistance Report for events of Monday, 9 January 2006
Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member, editorial board,
the Free Arab Voice. ( http://www.freearabvoice.org )
...In a bulletin posted at 4:50pm Mecca time Monday afternoon, Mafkarat
al-Islam reported that a short while earlier Iraqi Resistance forces had
begun an armed assault on one of the US occupation headquarters in the
middle of ar-Ramadi, some 110km west of Baghdad. The correspondent for
Mafkarat al-Islam reported that about 50! Resistance fighters launched
their attack about a quarter of an hour before he filed his report. The
attack commenced with a barrage of medium-caliber mortar rounds on the US
base, set up in the former Immigration Building in ar-Ramadi. After the
initial bombardment, Resistance fighters began a ground attack on the
American-occupied facility, firing anti-tank and anti-personnel rockets,
hurling hand grenades, and shooting light and medium weapons...

“My Uncle was murdered”
Layla A. Asamarai, MA Doctoral Candidate in Clinical Psychology
I received an e-mail today from a dear friend in Minnesota who is grieving
the death of her uncle in Iraq. Her heartrending personal account of his
murder deeply saddened me and I include it for all those who wish to read
it. Afterwards, please read a passionate appeal to the American people by
Cindy Sheehan, a tireless crusader to bring an end to the war in Iraq. God
Bless.
I wanted to share some really sad family news that we were just stricken
with yesterday. My uncle Abdulrazaq (my father's younger brother who is 50
years old) was in Iraq (in our local city of Samarra Iraq) on Thursday
January 5th, 2006 and at 8pm went to go meet with his business partners to
finish financial exchanges and on his way back he was killed by American
troops. Upon stealing the $10,000 that were in his coat pocket the troops
that the Americans are so proud of and support, found that he did not have
any weapons or explosives and then they dumped his body at the local
hospital and walked away with his money...

The incredible shrinking coalition
David Isenberg
Despite the best efforts of the Bush administration, increasing numbers of
countries are removing or reducing their military forces deployed to Iraq.
The coalition of the willing seems to be increasingly unwilling. In all,
the coalition has declined from a 2003 high of 38 nations and 50,000 troops
to 28 nations and about 20,000 soldiers. The coalition has been shrinking
for some time. Italy will withdraw 300 of its 2,800 troops this month as
part of a phased pullo! ut, and Spain and the Netherlands have already
withdrawn either all or virtually all their troops...
