of "insurgent" the media continues to deny the resistance legitimacy.
"Insurgents" destabilize for the sake of instability (...) Media use of
"insurgent" also essentializes resistance fighters as fundamentally violent
and destabilizing. They not only act today or tomorrow in an insurgent
fashion; they are insurgents. As Anthropology Prof. Ellen Contini-Morava
points out, a l! abel such as "insurgent" makes that the Iraqis' defining
characteristic. The use of "insurgent" to imply violent aggression is
ironic, given that the United States and Britain attacked Iraq without
provocation. Under any empirical measure, we remain the aggressors. By
entering the homes of Iraqi citizens at will, by detaining any individuals
without charges or representation and by using torture to intimidate the
local population, we have created an atmosphere of terror in Iraq...

project of "genocide" was used to incite the NATO war against Yugoslavia,
which devastated a country and left behind a cauldron of hatred and ethnic
cleansing in Kosovo. The United States is currently engaged in a far more
murderous and destructive war in Iraq. In this context, the Western
lamentations that inflate the Srebrenic massacre into "the greatest mass !
genocide since Nazi times" are a diversion from the real existing genocide,
which is not the work of some racist maniac, but the ongoing imposition of

"globalization"...

Iran: Friend or Foe?

“crisis” is for the U.S. to agree to stop interfering in other nations'

Bush administration claims new “milestone” in the occupation

GEORGE W. BUSH tried to regain some of his plummeting popularity with a
speech last week hailing the administration’s supposed successes in the
“war on terror”--even as a crisis looms over the constitutional referendum
in Iraq. To start with, he turned to an old standby--whipping up fears of
terrorism--with the stern claim that the U.S. “and our partners have
disrupted at least 10 serious al-Qaeda ter! rorist plots” since September
11. Then he repeated the fantasy that Iraq is on the road to democracy and
sovereignty, with the constitutional referendum set for October 15 the
latest milestone. Just how democratic the “new” Iraq will be was clear from
the efforts of officials of the U.S.-backed regime to ram through the
proposed draft...

family of nine over their dinner table in Baghdad’s al-Ghazaliyah district
Tuesday evening. In a dispatch posted at 10:25pm Mecca time Tuesday night,
the Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent in al-Ghazaliyah district of
northwestern Baghdad reported crowds of people gathered outside the door!
of the home of al-Hajj Zayd al-‘Ani said that armed men wearing Iraqi
puppet police uniforms attacked Zayd al-‘Ani’s house just after sunset when
the streets were empty as people gathered for the evening meal, breaking
their Ramadan fast...

Iraq Parliament to Amend Charter, Sunnis Opposing

the country's main Sunni party, Reuters said. "We agreed Iraqis should say
'Yes'," the party's general secretary Tareq Al-Hashimi said. He stressed

However, other Sunni groups remained opposing to the document. "This is a
ploy to persuade people not to vote 'No' to the ethnic and sectarian racist

of 19 Sunni groups. "We ask people to go and vote 'No' to this
constitution," the body's spokesman Saleh Al-Mutlak said...

More aimless musings on Miller

It appears that the elaborate game played by Libby and Miller was solely
intended to force Fitzgerald into questioning Miller only on her July
conversations with Libby. They wanted to have it both ways: Libby couldn't
be seen as denying the waiver, and Miller couldn't testify until they could
pressure Fitzgerald into only asking questions about July. Miller's lawyers
couldn't go to Fitzgerald and say "she'll testify on condition it is only
about July", as Fitzgerald would t! hen be alerted to the fact that there
were other conversations in other months, something which Miller and Libby
apparently were assuming he didn't know...
