ONE THOUSAND NINE-ELEVENS
Malcom Lagauche
...Since August 2, 1990, the U.S. has killed almost three million Iraqis.
The first Gulf War, the encompassing embargo and the current fiasco combine
for between 2.5 million and three million deaths. In other words, Iraq has
suffered ONE THOUSAND nine-elevens. That’s right, one thousand. If Ms. King
had watched the news over this time, she would have seen incinerated babies
dragged from bomb shelters. She would have seen Iraqi cities imbedded in
filth because the U.S. wou! ld not allow the Iraqis to import chlorine to
purify the water system. And, the U.S. bragged about this when Schwarzkopf
took to the microphone shortly after the Gulf War hostilities began and
stated, "We’ve knocked out their drinking water. Soon, they will begin to
acquire diarrhea and malnutrition." All the time, he was smiling when he
forecast the dismal future for Iraq. If Ms. King went a little further and,
instead of surfing the Internet for Bible interpretation sites, looked for
information about Iraq, she would have seen the headless bodies of
eight-year-olds or the brains oozing out of a head that once belonged to a
10-year-old girl...

George Packer on Iraq
Xymphora
From a very positive review by Gary Kamiya, Salon's executive editor, of a
new book by George Packer, "The Assassins' Gate: America in Iraq", on the
debacle of the attack on Iraq and its aftermath, referring to Wolfowitz,
Perle, Feith, and Abrams. "Almost all these figures, starting with Scoop
Jackson, shared a key obsession: Israel. 'In 1996, some of the people in
Perle's circle had begun to think about what it would mean for Saddam
Hussein to be removed from the Middle East sce! ne. 'They concluded it
would be very good for Israel,' Packer writes. 'Perle chaired a study group
of eight pro-Likud Americans, including Douglas Feith, who had worked under
Perle in the Reagan administration, and David Wurmser, who was the author
of the paper produced under the group's auspices 2. . .

ANALYSIS: Is the 'Salvador option' now fully operational in Iraq?
Jim O. Madison & Max Fuller
With reports of the operations of Shiite death squads appearing more
frequently in the mainstream press, this article bears rereading. --
Published last June, Max Fuller presents evidence gathered as of then
tending toward the conclusion that, far from being an undesired phenomenon
characteristic of a situation spinning out of U.S. control, the use of
terroristic methods by Shiites against Sunnis is in fact being car! ried
out by those trained by U.S. forces as part of a counter-insurgency
campaign organized by Americans...

The quintessential false dichotomy
John Kaminski
...By far, the most important of the Ten Commandments is "Thou shalt not
kill." Why is the people who talk most about God do it to justify killing?
These homicidal robots like George W. Bush, Queen Elizabeth and Ariel
Sharon all operate with the supernatural sanction of the media church, and
mask their crimes in hollow hymns to their own magnificence while the
transfixed masses sway in Pentecostal ecstasy to the lunatic media circus
triumphalizing the ravaging of o! ur own nest...

Gaffney’s Gripe
Kurt Nimmo, Another Day in the Empire
...Mr. Gaffney neglects to tell us, of course, we are increasingly
“unfree,” even if we “help defend” the “Free World,” in other words (in the
current context) kill Iraqis, as more than 100,000 have been killed to date
(and soon enough, if Gaffney has his way, plenty of Syrians and Iranians
will suffer the same fate). Bush has eviscerated the Bill of Rights (the
Second, Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Amendments are more or less toast), was
appointed to office by sup! ercilious Supreme Court “justices,” had his
operatives and henchman rig the last election, and now continually and
insistently proposes a police state to deal with natural disasters and
illusory bird flu pandemics...

Enjoy the Winter!
the woman i was
...Before the occupation, wars and sanctions, when my country had no
diplomatic relations with USA, winter was beautiful in Iraq. In Iraq
southern west desert, there was a winter resort. Ten of small villas, 15
apartments and a small restaurant located close to Sawa Lake, about 400 km
south west of Baghdad. There in the desert, it was possible to catch a
star; the sky was too near. That complex was looted and burnt in 1991
becoming a station for the smugglers in addition to those! who left Iraq
for different reasons and came back with the Americans!! Many of them
worked as guides in front of the American forces!! While I am writing my
feelings, an ID exploded before a while in Baghdad, a car bomb killed 30
civilians in Tel Afer... American and their Iraqi collaborators are ready
to burn Iraq to make the Iraqis feel insecure forcing them to say "YES" in
the Saturday referendum...

Clarification
the woman i was
...I will not answer those American who are asking me to go to the hell
because I am living already in the hell. Bush managed to convert Iraq from
a dream into hell. I ask them to read Jimmy Massey book
"KILL...KILL...KILL". Jimmy was with the American Marines for the last 12
years; he was in Iraq in the last 24 months. In Iraq, he discovered that
they did not go to liberate the Iraqis as he was told but to destroy the
country and kill the civilians. The American authorities did not ! allow
publishing his book in American, so he published it in Paris. I hope the
all Americans will read the book to discover the truth; then they will
decide to send Bush to the hell...

GI Special 3C79: Wounds No One Was Able To See - October 11, 2005
www.militaryproject.org
...The Pentagon says 15,000 GI's have been wounded. Half of those, given
the severity of their wounds, could not return to duty. But that number is
misleading. The statistics, released in Department of Defense "casualty
status" reports, only count GI's wounded by the bullets and bombs of the
enemy. The reports exclude tens of thousands of soldiers who became ill or
were injured in other ways. The US Transportation Command sa! ys that by
the end of August, it had evacuated 23,576 GI's from Iraq and Afghanistan
for injuries or illnesses that were not directly caused by combat. Stars
and Stripes reports that the military hospital in Landstuhl, Germany,
treated its 25,000th patient from Iraq or Afghanistan in July, including
some civilians and coalition partner soldiers...

Traumatised young Iraqis turn increasingly to hard drugs
IRIN
...Many consumers of heroin and cocaine say they have been traumatised by
the increasing cycle of political violence in Iraq as Islamic insurgents
step up their fight against the US-led coalition which invaded the country
in 2003 to depose former president Saddam Hussein. And drug pushers told
IRIN they had found a lucrative market amongst soldiers in the US-led
occupation forces. They report strong demand from Italian troops in
particular. Many of the! foreign troops ask their counterparts in the Iraqi
security forces to buy on the street for them, they added...

Not with our oil
Saadalla Al-Fathi
...Over the last 13 years there was much talk about a Middle Eastern energy
infrastructure involving Israel. For example, projects like a joint
refinery with Egypt, gas exports from Qatar, the Mediterranean Gas Ring,
etc were discussed endlessly without results. The refinery project went
ahead but only after Israel bailed out of it. A comprehensive and just
peace in the region and the restoration of the rights of the Palestinian
people does not seem to be on Israel's agenda and ! therefore statements
about grandiose schemes of energy systems, including the Haifa pipeline,
will remain, as I wrote before, a pipedream. Even if politics were to drive
such schemes towards realisation it must be remembered that they would
remain vulnerable and that oil and gas can by their nature sometimes defend
themselves...

American Enterprise Institute conference
Demoralization grips Iraq war’s ideological architects
Bill Van Auken, WSWS
Just a day before President Bush’s speech last week portraying the war in
Iraq as the frontline in the worldwide battle against terrorism, a
conference held in Washington bemoaned the evident shipwreck of the
administration’s previous preferred pretext—the struggle for “democracy” in
the Middle Eastern country. The October 5 conference was significant
because it was sponsored by the Ameri! can Enterprise Institute (AEI). This
right-wing think tank performed the ideological spadework for the US war
and provided a large share of the personnel who launched it...

Depleted Uranium Is WMD

My grandfather, U.S. Army Col. Edwin Joseph McAllister, was born in Battle

international expert on depleted uranium. I have worked in two U.S. nuclear
weapons laboratories, and in 1991 I became a whistleblower at the Livermore
lab. Depleted uranium is very, very, very nasty stuff: # Depleted uranium

Two Suicide Bombings Kill Dozens in Iraq
Baghdad and Tall Afar Targeted Days Before National Referendum
Dlovan Brwari and Omar Fekeiki, Washington Post
Thirty-six Iraqi civilians and soldiers were killed in two separate car
bomb attacks Tuesday in Baghdad and northwestern Iraq. The deadliest bomb
detonated in a busy market in the city of Tall Afar, Iraqi police officials
and eyewitnesses said. At around 10 a.m., a suicide attacker drove his car
into a crowded market in Tall Afar, about 260 mile! s northwest of the
capital, killing 30 people and wounding 45, said Abdullah Najim, a police
officer there...

How the Zarqawi myth was made in America
Loretta Napoleoni, Socialist Worker
The first time I heard the name of Musab al-Zarqawi was on 5 February 2003
when the then US secretary of state Colin Powell singled him out as the
link between Al Qaida and Saddam Hussein. At the time I knew that this
connection was fictitious. I had proof that such a link not only did not
exist, but that Al Qaida had tried to approach Saddam in 2000 and he had
refused to talk to them...

Prison guards 'enjoy torture'

An Egyptian man released earlier this month from the United States
detention in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, says the "torture" he suffered in the
military camp left him crippled in a wheelchair. Sami al-Leithy, 49, said:
"They used to grab me by the arms and hurl me on the floor, on my back.
They took pleasure in torturing us." He said: "I have suffered a fracture
in my backbone because of this...

Death Toll Rises for Military Reservists
ROBERT BURNS, AP Military Writer
The National Guard and Reserves are suffering a strikingly higher share of
U.S. casualties in Iraq, their portion of total American military deaths
nearly doubling since last year. Reservists have accounted for one-quarter
of all U.S. deaths since the Iraq war began, but the proportion has grown
over time. It was 10 percent for the five weeks it took to topple Baghdad
in the spring of 2003, and 20 percent for 2004 as a whole...

How to End the War
Natural Born Liars
PAUL CRAIG ROBERTS, CounterPunch
George W. Bush is a natural born liar. He lied us into a war, and now he is
lying to keep us there. In his October 6 self-congratulatory speech at that
neoconservative shrine, the National Endowment for Democracy, the President
of the United States said: "Today there are more than 80 Iraqi army
battalions fighting the insurgency alongside our forces." Eighty Iraqi
battalions makes it sound like the US is just lending Iraq a helping !
hand. I wonder what Congress and the US commanders in Iraq thought when
they heard there were 80 Iraqi battalions that American troops are helping
to fight insurgents? Just a few days prior to Bush's speech, Generals Casey
and Abizaid told Congress that, as a matter of fact, there was only one
Iraqi battalion able to undertake operations against insurgents...

The Public Torture of Robert Davis
Live from New Orleans: Abu Ghraib!
LILA RAJIVA, CounterPunch
Less than two weeks ago, on September 29, US District Judge, Judge Alvin
Hellerstein ordered the government to release fresh evidence 87 photos and
4 video tapes of detainee torture and abuse at Abu Ghraib, which the ACLU
had sought in a lawsuit brought against General Myers in 2003. But for
anyone looking for confirmation that brutality and abuse is not a war-time
aberration but a home-grown reality in Amer! ican law enforcement, no need
to wait. An Associated Press Television News tape from New Orleans provides

Washington's War Dems
JOSHUA FRANK

Democrats should be abandoned. "I will not support a pro-war Democrat [in

titled "War-Hawk Republicans and Anti-War Democrats: What's the
Difference?," Sheehan wrote, "I think if one is not speaking out right now

Democrats Still Around?
Reza Fiyouzat, RevolutionaryFlowerpotSociety
Do not worry if you are a Republican and you still hear utterances that
annoy you coming from your left; it certainly is not from the official
‘left’ in the form of Democratic Party USA. Most likely, the rage and the
screams for murder are coming from the hard left of the spectrum, from
which you are comfortably far, far away. Either that, or from within your
own Republican Party (...) There are likewise deep, structural reasons for
the fact th! at some Democrats feel that they should be more Republican
than thou, and, exactly at a time when the Iraq war/occupation is starting
to be increasingly perceived as a disaster for the national interests of
the U.S., propose to send an extra 80,000 troops to Iraq!...

Iraq issues warrants for former U.S. backed officials
QASSIM ABDUL-ZAHRA, Associated Press Writer
Iraq has issued arrest warrants against the defense minister and 27 other
officials from the U.S.-backed government of former Prime Minister Iyad
Allawi over the alleged disappearance or misappropriation of $1 billion in
military procurement funds, officials said Monday. Those accused include
four other ministers from Allawi's government, which was replaced by an
elected Cabinet led by Shiite parties in April, said A! li al-Lami of
Iraq's Integrity Commission. Many of the officials are believed to have
left Iraq, including Hazem Shaalan, the former defense minister who moved
to Jordan shortly after the new government was installed...
