George Bush and the Four Horsemen
Mike Whitney
It's becoming apparent to even the most avid Bush loyalist, that the
current charlatan-in-chief has been the greatest catastrophe in the
nation's 200 year history. Regrettably, there are strong indications that
the Crawford albatross is planning to pull us further downward towards the
ocean floor. At present, the republic is buckling beneath the weight of
deception, violence and incompetence. In Iraq, the plan to chop up the
country into three smaller parts is moving! ahead despite the intensity of
the resistance or the objections of the Sunni minority. Bush has assumed
the mantle of an Iraqi Jefferson Davis championing the merits of
reformation and regional autonomy. The new constitution provides only the
thinnest cover for a neocon master-plan that destroys what little is left
of Iraqi society while legitimizing a permanent American occupation...

Oil matters ... The oil proceeds were, and still are, under the total
control of the occupation
Imad Khadduri , Free Iraq
"The oil proceeds were, and still are, under the total control of the
occupation. The details thereof are not clearly known since they are
surrounded by mystery.
The report issued by the General Accounting Office points out that
contracts, amounting to billions of dollars, were spent out of the Iraqi
Development Fund, without being reviewed by any independent party. The
committee affiliated to the Senates' Council also stated that the 20
billion dollars of the Iraqi funds that were spent one week before the
transfer of the authority to the Iraqis "were described as waste, fraud,
and abuse". After handing out the authority to the temporary Iraqi Council
of Governance on 28/6/2004, it is unknown yet who is the authority the US
relies on in spending the Iraqi funds, distributing and approving
contracts!...

Ethnic cleansing in the New Iraq
LENIN'S TOMB
...The occupiers have clearly been trying to brew polarisation along ethnic
lines, by sending Shiite death squads into Sunni areas. This is not the
first time such reports have emerged either. From the point of view of the
occupiers, disrupting the development of pan-Iraqi unity against the
occupation is crucial. Similarly, crushing resistance groups is difficult
when they are as acephalous and diffuse as the Iraqi resistance is: but the
use of death squads and terror! is presumably designed to drain the sea in
which their opponents swim...

The Dark Cloud of Democracy
Andrew Stromotich, Dahr Jamail's Iraq Dispatches
On Saturday morning, October 2nd, hours after the Pentagon officially
launched ‘Operation Iron Fist’, the Associated Press reported, “About 1,000
U.S. troops, backed by attack helicopters, swarmed into a tiny Iraqi
village near the Syrian border Saturday in an offensive aimed at rooting
out fighters from al-Qaida in Iraq, the country’s most feared militant
group, the military said.” Being a Syrian border town, Sadah has been a
target of ! U.S. assaults before. This weekend however, was major – 1,000
troops moved on this little village of 2,000 men, women and children...

Senator Levin Loses Mind, Says We Should Threaten Iraqis We'll Make Plans
to Leave Someday
David Swanson, AfterDowningStreet.org
Levin, convinced that Iraqis WANT a U.S. occupation, writes "The
administration should tell Iraqis that if they do not reach a political
settlement by year's end, we will consider a timetable for our withdrawal."
A "settlement" seems unlikely, but this would probably guarantee not
reaching it...

I Have Arrived; I Am Home
Cindy Sheehan, www.opednews.com
...Jewel is Buddhist and I told her: "You realize your son died in Iraq."
She replied to me: "We have all died because of this war." She is right. On
April 04, 2004, Cindy Sheehan died, but Cindy Sheehan was born. The dead
Cindy Sheehan lived for her home and family. She kept a neat and tidy
house, often cooked meals, did everyone's laundry, entertained friends,
laughed more than she cried, worked at various jobs, and her family meant
the entire world to h! er. She lived an insulated life filled with
Thanksgivings and Christmases and Birthdays and other celebrations. The
Cindy who was born on 04/04/04 still adores her family above all things but
now knows that the human family is worth struggling for too...

Jailing Iraqi Journalists: The Pentagon is silent as U.S. military imprisons
Ann Cooper, Committee to Protect Journalists
Much has been said about what is and is not being reported in Iraq, but one
thing is clear: Local, front-line journalists are not only risking their
lives, they are risking imprisonment for their work. Ali Omar Abrahem
al-Mashhadani, a 36-year-old freelance cameraman and photographer who
worked for the Reuters news agency in Ramadi, was taken from his home on
August 8 during a general sweep of! his neighborhood by U.S. Marines. His
family says the Marines were suspicious of photos he stored in his cameras.
He was sent to Baghdad's Abu Ghraib prison, held without charge, and denied
access to his family and a lawyer...

Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member, editorial board,
the Free Arab Voice. ( http://www.freearabvoice.org )
...Ahmad Bin Hilli, the Assistant Secretary General of the League of Arab
States on Monday denied that the motorcade carrying Arab League delegates
through Baghdad had come under any attack, according to a dispatch reported
by al-Jazeera satellite TV. Earlier on Monday, the Iraqi puppet police had
announced that armed men ha! d attacked the motorcade carrying
representatives of the Arab League in western Baghdad on Monday...

Numbers Racket
Billmon
Today there are more than 80 Iraqi army battalions fighting the insurgency
alongside our forces. George W. Bush, Speech to National Endowment for
Democracy, October 6, 2005 (...) GEN. CASEY: We fully recognize that Iraqi
armed forces will not have an independent capability for some time, because
they don't have the institutional base to support them. And so Level 1, as
you'll recall from the slide, that's what's got one battalion...

"Verifying" the news
Left I on the News
Consider this story from the Los Angeles Times on the fighting in Western
Iraq. The headline, and the lead, are that "Six U.S. Marines were killed by
roadside bombs." As we read further, we are told that "The U.S. military
said Friday that at least 50 suspected insurgents were killed." No mention
of Iraqi civilians, until we get to this: "Sheik Usama Jadaan, a tribal
leader in the city of Karabilah...said the fighting in the west was so
brutal that residents 'are now seeing! members of their families being
killed in front of their own eyes by the American bombardment.'" And in
response? "The allegations of civilian deaths could not be verified...

The Labyrinth of Iraq
James Carroll, Boston Globe
...A labyrinth is winding and mysterious but has only one pathway, no
tricks, and no cul-de-sacs. To follow this trail in patience and humility
is to come, eventually, to a center, which is the knowledge of
contemplative truth. Purposeful walking is the opposite of panicked flight.
That is why labyrinths are on the floors of cathedrals, not prisons. To
find the way into the heart of the labyrinth is, simultaneously, to find
the way out. The labyrinth, therefore, a! nswers the maze. How do we leave
Iraq? By reversing ourselves and simply leaving...

"The War on Terror" -- in Translation
Norman Solomon
When the Bush administration fires off a new round of speechifying about
“the war on terror,” the U.S. press rarely goes beyond the surface meanings
of rhetoric provided by White House scriptwriters. But the president’s big
speech at the National Endowment for Democracy on Oct. 6 could have been
annotated along these lines: * “We will not tire or rest until the war on
terror is won.” Translation: This is a war that can go on forever. * “And
while the ! killers choose their victims indiscriminately, their attacks
serve a clear and focused ideology, a set of beliefs and goals that are
evil but not insane.” As president, I am the world’s authority on evilness
and insanity...

US 'considered' strikes on Syria
Daily Telegraph
THE United States debated launching military strikes inside Syria against
camps used by insurgents operating in neighbouring Iraq, a US magazine
reported overnight. US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice successfully
opposed the idea at a meeting of senior American officials held on October
1, Newsweek reported, citing unnamed US government sources...

I, Bagman: The Story of Colin Powell
Chris Floyd, Empire Burlesque
Jonathan Schwarz is back and loaded for bear over at Tiny Revolution, with
a takedown of the tissue of lies that Colin Powell disgorged in an
interview with ABC News last month. Powell's reputation as "one of the good
guys" in the Bush Administration has been one of the most enduring
mysteries of our sad, demented times. He was not only one of the chief
enablers of Bush's war crime in Iraq, but his entire career has marked him
out as a bagman for ! a bloody elite...

GI Special 3C78: "Three More Sides To Fill" - October 10, 2005
www.militaryproject.org
...No doubt, many people who attended an antiwar demonstration for the
first time on September 24 were motivated mainly or solely by the desire to
see U.S. troops withdrawn from Iraq as soon as possible. But the issue of
Iraqis' right to determine what happens in their own country is undeniably
a legitimate question to take up--in discussions among activists; in those
"mind-numbing meetings" Cooper so hates that plan antiwar ac! tivities and
the future of the movement; from the speakers' platform at demonstrations.
Those who try to stifle this discussion with blustering insults and false
allegations do a disservice to our movement--and also to the struggle of
the Iraqi people against an illegal and immoral occupation of their
country...

Foreshadowing During Ramadan: A Prophecy (poem)
Sam Hamod
the tympanum of earth

with the constant shelling
by the dogs of war
in American costumes
laying pillage to one Muslim city
after another, raping the landscape
with heavy armor, barraging
small villages with helicopter gunships,
ripping wedding tents and brides
shawls into shreds, leaving only blood
in the path
of their onslaught this Ramadan...

Galloway and the Stampeding of Arab Jews, Part II
Kurt Nimmo, Another Day in the Empire
Avi Shlaim, author of The Iron Wall: Israel and the Arab World, affirms
Naeim Giladi’s account of the “Zionist underground” plotting to stampede
Arab Jews out of Iraq into Israel, where they basically served as hewers of
wood and drawers of water in servitude to Ashkenazi Jews from Eastern
Europe. “Shlaim was born in Baghdad in 1945, to a wealthy family with a
magnificent three-story house and 10 servants, including a special !
servant who went to the market to do the shopping,” Meron Rapoport writes
for the Israeli newspaper Ha’aretz. “His father was an importer of building
materials, and hobnobbed with the heads of the Iraqi government, including
then-prime minister Nuri Said.” According to Shlaim, there “were Zionist
agents who tried to create propaganda [in Iraq], but it didn’t impress the
Jewish elite and the middle class. There was no tradition of persecution or
anti-Semitism in Iraq”...

Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member, editorial board,
the Free Arab Voice.
Colonel Ahmad Salman, the spokesman for the Iraqi puppet army in al-Anbar
province disclosed that the recent American “river gate” offensive mounted
along the upper Euphrates valley in the west of al-Anbar had been a
colossal failure that succeeded in attaining nothing significant but had to
be called off after three days due to heavy American loses. Colonal S!
alman told the correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam that the “river gate”
offensive had succeeded in eliminating only 5 percent of the Iraqi
Resistance’s strength in the area...

America's greatest enemy ...
Truth About Iraqis
... is not hiding in a cave somewhere. He isn't hacking into your bank's
mainframe. His name isn't Saddam or Chirac. In fact, America's greatest
enemy is right in your front yard. He chuckles when a camera points its
lenses in his direction, he likes to pet his dog when he comes home, and he
loves a challenge so much he beckons the world on by quirping "Bring em
on!". Yes, George Bush and the Bush empire have lowered America's stature
as a powerful nation to one tha! t renders garbage as gospel...

We Can’t Let "It" Happen Here
Jason Miller
Over a year ago, the comfort of my world severely diminished as I took my
journey through the looking glass and discerned the ugly truths about the
nation of my birth, the United States of America. “Logic and proportion”
certainly seemed to have “fallen softly dead” when I discovered that much
of what I had learned about my country as a child had been a lie. My world
was turned upside down. Now I passionately pursue my goal to share my
awakening with many others so they ! too feel inspired to struggle to
preserve the excellent qualities of America and to eradicate the rotting
decay.

Glenn Beck Praises Torturer
lapin, Daily Kos
...After devoting a portion of the October 6 broadcast of his nationally
syndicated radio show to discussing pending legislation that would prohibit
"cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment" of detainees held by
the U.S. government, Glenn Beck interviewed a caller who claimed to have
worked as an "intelligence officer" and to have "extracted intelligence"
from U.S.-held prisoners by torturing them. The caller said his preferred
methods of torture included b! urning the retinas of prisoners' eyes with
high-powered halogen lamps and blowing out prisoners' eardrums with
high-pressure water and air. He also claimed to have known "a contractor
that did drilling on live teeth." After hearing the caller describe these
torture techniques, Beck responded, "I've got to tell you, I appreciate
your service"...
