Imperial Propagandists
Ghali Hassan
Since the invasion and occupation of Iraq by U.S. forces, there is much
talk about the opinions and views of Western “experts” on Iraq. With the
exception of very few honourable voices, the majority of Western “experts”
are imperial propagandists complicit in U.S. war crimes against the Iraqi
people. The most conspicuous of these instant new breed of “experts” is
Juan Cole of the University of Michigan and the Blogger of Informed Comment
(...) Like the pretext of Weapon of Mass! Destruction (WMD) to destroy
Iraq, the pretexts of “democracy” and ‘freedom” have now evaporated from
the thinking of Juan Cole and other imperial propagandists. Juan Cole, like
other imperial propagandists, justifies the ongoing Occupation of Iraq by
U.S. forces as a necessary measure to “prevent civil war”. Again, this is
utterly misleading U.S. propaganda. Civil war, as it is promoted by Western
media and Western “experts” is the ultimate aim of the U.S. Occupation in
Iraq. It is the perfect pretext for the Occupation to continue...

IRAQ: Focus on increasing cases of abused women
IRIN
Jamila (not her real name), aged 28, is too afraid to leave her home, in
fear that she will be raped again. She says she constantly relives the
nightmare she endured three months ago at the hands of an unknown attacker
on the streets of Baghdad. "I'm afraid that if I leave my home someone will
attack me again and I feel dirty. I tried to commit suicide but my mother
stopped me," Jamila said (...) She is just one of hundreds of cases of
sexual abuse in the count! ry that have taken place since the US-led
invasion (...) "When we say that we want Saddam Hussein back in the
government they think that we are insurgents, but the truth is that with
him there was security and never a case of rape," Jamila said...

Protest Over Utilities Spirals into Violence
Peaceful demonstration in Kurdish region spills over into a riot with
political overtones.
Wyria Hama Tahir
Dissatisfaction over inadequate water and electricity supplies led to a
recent mass protest in the Kurdish town of Kalar, which left buildings
burnt and some 30 people injured in clashes with police. More than 2,000
residents, most of them in their twenties, marched down the streets of
Kalar on September 7, demanding that basic public services ! be restored to
an acceptable level. They also complained about fuel shortages that have
been going on for two years. It is the first time that there have been
protests of this size against government services in Iraqi Kurdistan...

As flood waters recede
More racist gov’t atrocities exposed
LeiLani Dowell, Workers World
The ravages of capitalism continue to be exposed in the aftermath of
Katrina, as even more stories highlighting the official hostility and
neglect toward the poor and people of color of the region—before, during
and after the hurricane—are brought to worldwide attention. Two paramedics
from California trapped in New Orleans by the storm after attending a
conference there wrote a gripping account of their experienc! es that
appeared first in Socialist Worker, circulated widely on the Internet, and
eventually was picked up by other media...

Iraqis flee as fears mount of more U.S.-led strikes on cities
Azzaman
Hundreds of people are fleeing restive cities in the center and western
parts of Iraq following the massive U.S.-led attack on Tal Affar which has
led to the displacement of tens of thousands. Many people in Samarra, 120
kilometers north of Baghdad, are reported to be leaving, fearing an
imminent U.S.-led assault. Long queues of cars are forming at military
checkpoints waiting for permission to leave the city. Senior Iraqi
officials, including ! Defense Minister Saadoun al-Dulaimi, have warned
that the attack on Tal Affar is one of a series of forays to subdue
anti-U.S. and anti-government groups in other cities...

Support the St. Patrick's Day Four
Peter Rothberg, The Nation
On March 17, 2003, two days before the US invasion of Iraq, commenced, four
protesters--now known as the "Saint Patrick's Four"--entered a military
recruiting center near Ithaca, New York, and poured small amounts of their
own blood around the building's vestibule in a symbolic protest against the
coming invasion. By their own account, they were alone in the vestibule and
no one was prevented from entering or leaving the center. For this act of
non-vio! lence civil disobedience, the longtime Catholic peace
activists--sisters Clare and Teresa Grady, Daniel Burns, and Peter
DeMott--are now charged with conspiracy to impede "by force, intimidation
and threat" an officer of the United States along with three lesser
offenses. If convicted of federal conspiracy in a trial starting this
Monday, September 19, they face up to six years in prison, a period of
probation and $275,000 in fines...

JUST SAY "NO"
(To The Butcher Ariel Sharon)
Judy Andreas
The Internet mailman brought me an interesting flier this week. The
headline screamed: "NEW YORK SAYS 'NO' TO THE BUTCHER ARIEL SHARON!!!! The
flier went on to announce a protest in front of the United Nations on
Thursday, September 15, 2005. The reason for the protest was that Ariel
Sharon was scheduled to speak, as an honored guest, before the General
Assembly as part of the "World Summit." An honored guest?????? On the
twenty-third anniversary of t! he killing of thousands of Palestinian
refugees at Sabra and Shatila camps in Lebanon under Sharon's watch, is
this what we are honoring? What an outrage!!...

Cleric says al-Zarqawi died long ago
Ajazera.net
Al-Qaida's leader in Iraq Abu Musab al-Zarqawi is dead but Washington
continues to use him as a bogeyman to justify a prolonged military
occupation, an Iraqi Shia cleric says in an interview. Sheikh Jawad
al-Kalesi, the imam of the al-Kazemiya mosque in Baghdad, told France's Le
Monde newspaper on Friday: "I don't think that Abu Musab al-Zarqawi exists
as such. He's simply an invention by the occupiers to divide the people"
(...) He said an audio message posted on ! the Internet on Wednesday and
attributed to al-Zarqawi, was meant to push Shia "to find refuge with the
Americans rather than join the resistance"...

Iraq, A Drain on American Power
Mirza A. Beg, MMN
The two and a half year old invasion of Iraq has been terribly mismanaged.
Most Americans were oblivious to it, because Iraq is "over there," and the
amenities of the average American were not directly affected. The terrible
mismanagement in the wake of Hurricane Katrina has opened their eyes to the
abject incompetence of the Bush administration. Finally more and more
Americans are asking, why are we in Iraq? The two reasons promoted by Bush
were WMDs in Iraq and ! the complicity of Saddam in the 9/11 attacks. Both
have been proven to be not only false, but also contrived. The roster of
mismanagement in Iraq is long. Nothing in Iraq has been done right...

Venezuelan Leader Lashes at US in UN Speech
Agence France-Presse
Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez called the United States a "terrorist
state" and said the United Nations headquarters should be moved away from
New York. The outspoken Chavez littered his speech to the UN world summit
with anti-US comments which were strongly applauded (...) At a press
conference after his speech, Chavez said that the United States was a
"terrorist state" because of its actions in Iraq, Robertson's assassination
call and for harbo! ring Luis Posada Carriles, who is wanted for the
bombing of a Cuban airliner. "It is a terrorist state. It is a government
that violates all rules and behaves shamelessly," he said...

Hearing A Faint Iraq Strategy
Robert Dreyfuss
A glimmer of hope emerged yesterday on Capitol Hill that at least some
lawmakers are thinking about how to end the war in Iraq. More than two
dozen members of Congress—including one Republican, Walter Jones of North
Carolina (representing Camp Lejeune)—took part in an extraordinary hearing
organized by Rep. Lynn Woolsey, D.-Calif., on ending the war, with
testimony from a panel of experts that included former Sen. Max Cleland. "I
have concluded that the best way to su! pport the troops is with an exit
strategy from Iraq," said Cleland, a gravely wounded veteran of the Vietnam
conflict...

Iraq attacks kill dozens
Aljazeera.net
Several Muslim worshippers have been killed and wounded by a car bomb
detonated outside a mosque in the central Iraqi city of Tuz Khurmatu,
police sources said. Captain Saed Ahmed said the bomb went off as people
were emerging from the Great Prophet shrine in the town north of Baghdad.
He said nine people were killed and another 21 wounded in the Friday
afternoon attack. Earlier on Friday, at least two people were killed and 13
others wounded in an attack on a crowd of day l! abourers gathered at a
Baghdad square, medics and security officials said.

Tomdispatch: Chip Ward, Bush's Holy War on Nature
Tom Engelhardt &Chip Ward
When Katrina hit, it blew away yet another administration-managed scrim of
irreality. First for scores of reporters and then for millions of
Americans, it connected so many things (including what was happening in
Iraq and here) that might otherwise have remained unlinked for months or
years more. It suddenly revealed, at an extreme, the world Bush has made
for us. New Orleans is now a vast toxic dump (and, as at Ground Zero in New
York af! ter 9/11, a toxic cover-up is sure to follow, endangering relief
workers today and returning residents tomorrow); the city's embattled
wetlands are in dismal shape; a superfund toxic waste site remains
underwater; the whole area may prove an "underwater Love Canal"; parts of
the Gulf of Mexico are now covered with huge, if unacknowledged, oil
slicks; and much of the damage, long and short-term, had a human hand
associated with it...

The Priorities of Power
Chris Floyd, Empire Burlesque
This is unbelievable -- except that it's not. The day after Hurricane
Katrina ravaged the Gulf Coast, killing hundreds of people and stranding
thousands of the sick and weak in hospitals without power, Vice President
Dick Cheney made a forceful personal intervention in the crisis: he ordered
a Mississippi energy utility to divert its emergency crews from restoring
power to rural hospitals and local water supplies -- and instead set them
to work on a pipeline t! hat sends fuel to the Northeast. People were dying
in hospitals; people were languishing in damp, tropical heat, drinking
dirty water tainted with death and disease. But just as in his Vietnam
War-dodging days, Cheney had "other priorities"...

American Allegory
Jeff Wells, Rigorous Intuition
Things are still rather chaotic here, though mostly in a good way, so I
haven't the time now for a proper post. But since we've come to this almost
inconceivable moment, when dogs pick at uncollected corpses in the streets
of a murdered American city, preemptive nuclear war against the threat of
non-nuclear weapons is official policy, the potential repeal of the Posse
Comitatus Act is floated, and a former US Governor - even if it is Jesse
Ventura - speaks of fleei! ng the fascism and ruin that the Bush White
House is visiting upon the country, I'm thinking maybe what's really needed
is a proper allegory. Something like Bob Dylan's Masked and Anonymous...

America's 'Mental Defectives' Confront Iran
Walter C. Uhler
On a recent visit to a periodicals room in the Joe Paterno wing of Penn
State's Pattee Library I ran across a fascinating journal, The Long Term
View, published by the Massachusetts School of Law at Andover. Its Spring
2004 issue was entirely devoted to the question, "Why We Seek War" and its
editor, Lawrence R. Velvel, commenced his introduction by asserting: "The
United States is a nation which seeks war. We better change or we may end
up destroying ou! rselves and perhaps even the world." Mr. Velvel provides
some twenty-one reasons why Americans seek war, but I was especially
intrigued by reason number six: "Government is incompetent and its leaders
stupid."...

Katrina, Bush and Cheney
Grounds for Impeachment
FRANCIS BOYLE
The longer we delay the necessary and principled impeachment process
against Bush Jr. and his Neo-conservatives apparatchiks the greater will be
the disaster for all the peoples of the world and even here in the United
States. Witness the racist and class-based criminal mistreatment inflicted
by the Bush Jr. administration upon the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
President Bush Jr., Vice President Cheney, and Secretary of Homeland
Security Mic! hael Chertoff must all be impeached immediately for denying
Equal Protection of the Laws to the Katrina Victims because they are
African Americans and because they are Poor in violation of the Fifth and
Fourteenth Amendments to the United States Constitution. Their criminal
negligence and resulting mass homicides constitute "other high Crimes and
Misdemeanors" within the meaning of Article II, Section 4 of the U.S.
Constitution quoted above...

Who Are The 75,000 Body Bags For?
Lynn Landes
Questions mount over Hurricane Katrina's death count. Estimates are now
well below 10,000 with the death toll currently standing at 648 for
Louisiana, Mississippi, and Florida. So, why did the Bush Administration
order 75,000 body bags? Along that line, other things don’t add up. For
instance, why did FEMA contact a crematorium in the local area; how could
people identify their loved ones if only ashes remain? Why did FEMA rebuff
efforts of volunteer morticians? Why d! id the feds try to ban reporters
from covering the body recovery effort? Why have the feds employed
mercenaries in New Orleans? Don't we have plenty of volunteers, police and
military in the U.S. to get any job done that needs doing? What's really
going on?...

Camp Casey Memorial Stolen

Iraqi Resistance Report for events of Thursday, 15 September 2005
Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member, editorial board,
the Free Arab Voice
A group of the best-known and established Iraqi Resistance organizations,
reflecting both the patriotic and the Islamic trends within the Resistance
movement, issued a declaration in al-Anbar Province on Thursday, rejecting
the call for “total war on the Shi‘ah” both civilians and combatants" –
that was made by Abu Mus‘ab az-Zarqawi, the head of the Islami! c
fundamentalist al-Qa‘idah in the Land of the Two Rivers, the day before.
The Resistance organizations made clear that they “had nothing to do with
that call.” The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam in al-Anbar Province
quoted the Resistance declaration as saying, “The aim of the Iraqi
Resistance is the expulsion of the occupation, making it an example for
anyone who might dare to think in the future about occupying any Arab or
Islamic state.” The declaration stated: “the Resistance would set as its
aim and direct its strikes at the occupation and its stooges, and no one
else. A call to kill the Shi‘ah is a fire that burns all Iraqis, Sunni and
Shi‘i alike,” the declaration said...

Crunch Time for the Neolib Master Plan
Kurt Nimmo, Another Day in the Empire
...Instead, the invasion of Iraq (and soon Iran and Syria) was engineered
by a coterie of neoliberal globalists and neocon demagogues primarily
interested in sending an irrefutable message to much of the world—resist
corporatist and neoliberal economic and political domination and they will
kill your children (a prelude to the invasion was a medieval siege lasting
more than a decade and resulting in the death of more than 500,000 Iraqi k!
ids), bomb your water purification and sewage treatment plants, destroy and
steal your antiquities, poison your people (especially children) with
depleted uranium and other monstrously criminal weapons, and occupy your
country with ill-educated yahoo troops and subject your people to
unrelenting terrorism through covert ops and brutal police state tactics of
arbitrary mass arrests and targeted execution of all who resist or may
possess the capacity to resist...
