Iraq needs 220,000 tons of imported wheat a month

Iraq needs to import 220,000 tons of wheat and 75,000 tons of rice to cover
its food rationing system, the Trade Ministry said. The system, under which
Iraqis receive highly subsidized food items, has been under severe strain
since the 2003 U.S. invasion of the country. Millions of families have
relied on the rations since they were introduced in response to U.N. trade
sanctions imposed for the 1990 invasion of Kuwait. The system was a success
in the! years until the U.S. invasion and U.N. aid agencies accredit it for
saving Iraqis from starvation. But many families go without rations now and
there has been a decline in both the quality and quantity of foods
distributed. The authorities blame the ongoing violence but there reports
blaming massive corruption at the Trade Ministry for the delays in
distribution and insufficient and low-quality supplies...

White House Aims to Block Legislation on Detainees

legislation supported by Republican senators that would bar the US military
from engaging in "cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment" of detainees, from
hiding prisoners from the Red Cross, and from using interrogation methods
not authorized by a new Army field manual. Vice President Cheney met
Thursday evening with three senior Republican member! s of the Senate Armed
Services Committee to press the administration's case that legislation on
these matters would usurp the president's authority and - in the words of a
White House official - interfere with his ability "to protect Americans
effectively from terrorist attack"...

Three US soldiers killed by bomb-attack in Fallujah

...Three US soldiers were killed due to a bomb-attack in Fallujah, west the
iraqi capital of Baghdad. According to reports of eyewitnesses the bomb
exploded, as the soldiers were patrolling an industrial area in a vehicle.
The armored vehicle was burned (completely), killing the soldiers in it,
they said. The american military has not confirmed the incident yet...

most effective method to disrupt the ongoing political process of a country.

...It appears that the Israeli technical advice involved in Operation
Kratos is already in full force, and it is even possible that this whole
incident, with so many duds, was just a training exercise for the British
police. Asking Israel for advice on how to deal with this problem is
particularly funny. I understand why Israel does what it does: it wants to
create terrorism so it can use its state terrorism in 'self defense' to

Khalid Is Free!

After many long days of uncertainty and worry, Khalid is now free. We want
to thank everyone who tried to comfort us in these hard times with kind
emails and messages. For the last couple of weeks, my family and I have put
all of our effort into trying to get Khalid released from detention in
Iraq. Now that he is free, we will direct our efforts towards tens of
thousands of other innocent people locked up either in U.S. detention
centers or in the jails of the U.S. supported regime...!
