Sodomizing Children. For Freedom.
Hunter, Daily Kos
...Wwe already have some idea of what the Abu Ghraib images in question
show, though we don't know precisely which ones are in the queue to be
released. The images, according to those lawmakers who have seen them,
paint a picture of torture at Abu Ghraib far, far worse than most Americans
have yet been willing to admit. Via the Boston Herald, May 8th, 2004:
Signaling the worst revelations are yet to come, Secretary of Defense
Donald Rumsfeld said the additio! nal photos show "acts that can only be
described as blatantly sadistic, cruel and inhuman." [...] The unreleased
images show American soldiers beating one prisoner almost to death,
apparently raping a female prisoner, acting inappropriately with a dead
body, and taping Iraqi guards raping young boys, according to NBC News....

Socialist advance and the necessity of alliance with liberation and
independence movements
Stephen Gowans, What's Left
...Since occupation and resistance are mutually opposed, being equally
against both is like being equally against bacterial infection and
antibiotics and equally against central plumbing and open sewers in the
streets. Once one process arises, it’s not possible to oppose both the
initial process and the one that arises to oppose it. In other words, in
advance of the violent occupation of Iraq by! US and British forces it may
have been possible to say, “I’m against violence, whether expressed through
occupation or violent resistance” and mean something, but once the violent
occupation sets in train a violent resistance as an opposing force, to say
you’re against both is to ignore the fact that the one has occurred and
called forth the other. You may “regret” the violence, but to say you
“oppose” the violence of both sides is meaningless...

Bush Administration Files 11th Hour Papers Blocking the Release of Darby CD
Photos and Video Of Abu Ghraib Torture
Center For Constitutional Rights
On July 22, the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) denounced the latest
efforts of the Bush Administration to block the release of the Darby photos
and videos depicting torture at Iraq’s Abu Ghraib prison facility. On June
2, 2004, CCR, along with the ACLU, Physicians for Human Rights, Veterans
for Common Sense, and Veterans for Peace filed papers with the U.S. !
District Court, charging the Department of Defense and other government
agencies with illegally withholding records concerning the abuse of
detainees in American military custody. Since then, the organizations have
been repeatedly rebuffed in their efforts to investigate what happened at
the prison...

Endless Nightmare, Ever Darker
Chris Floyd, Empire Burlesque
...Bush is openly telling the elected representatives of the American
people that he will not allow them to put any fetters on his power to treat
captives in any way he sees fit. He will not allow them to outlaw barbaric
practices that stain the nation's honor and stir hatred against its people
around the world. He will not even allow them to examine the allegations.
He must have a free hand -- an iron hand -- to do what he pleases, to whom
he pleases.! ..

Open Season on South Asians in London
Kurt Nimmo, Another day in the empire
If you are of South Asian heritage, prefer to wear a bulky coat on summer
days, and are afraid of the police, you may want to stay indoors for the
foreseeable future. “U.K. police said they shot dead a man at south
London’s Stockwell subway station, just a day after four would-be bombers
failed in an attempt to detonate bombs on three subway trains and a bus in
the capital,” reports Bloomberg. “Police challenged the man in the station,
an! d then shot him just after 10 a.m. local time today, a spokeswoman for
the Metropolitan Police said in a telephone interview.” According to other
reports, the police plugged the man after knocking him to the floor. For
Muslims, especially Muslims with dark skin, Britain is now a lot like
Israel, where Arabs are killed on a regular basis (and tortured,
humiliated, forced to drink their own urine)...

Iraqi Oil Workers Hold 24-Hour Strike - Oil Exports Shut Down
Basra Oil Workers
15,000 Southern Oil Company workers from the General Union of Oil Employees
- Iraq's largest independent union - began a 24-hour strike today, cutting
most oil exports from the south of Iraq. The strike is in support of
demands made by Basra Governor Mohammad al-Waili - reflective of the wishes
of the vast majority of Basra's residents - for a higher percentage of
Southern oil revenue to be ploughed back into Basra's local economy. Ba!
sra's sewage system, electricity grid and medical services are still
damaged and running at limited capacity. Despite being the capital of
Iraq's oil reserves, the governorate is still struggling with entrenched
poverty, malnutrition and an unemployment rate of 40%...

Tomgram: The CIA's La Dolce Vita War on Terror
Tom Engelhardt
Like so much else in our moment, it contravened laws the U.S. had once
signed onto, pretzeled the English language, went directly to the darkside,
was connected to various administration lies and manipulations that
preceded the invasion of Iraq, and was based on taking the American
taxpayer to the cleaners. I'm talking about a now-notorious Bush
administration "extraordinary rendition" in Italy, the secret kidnapping of
a radical Muslim cleric off the ! streets of Milan in early 2003, his
transport via U.S. airbases in Italy and Germany to Egypt, and there,
evidently with the CIA station chief for Italy riding shotgun, directly
into the hands of Egyptian torturers...

White House threatens veto over detainee policies
Vicki Allen, Reuters
The White House on Thursday threatened to veto a massive Senate bill for
$442 billion in next year's defense programs if it moves to regulate the
Pentagon's treatment of detainees or sets up a commission to investigate
operations at Guantanamo Bay prison and elsewhere. The Bush administration,
under fire for the indefinite detention of enemy combatants at Guantanamo
Bay in Cuba and questions over whether its policies led to horrendous
abuses a! t Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq, put lawmakers on notice it did not
want them legislating on the matter...
