On Saturday, July 23, some 300 communities throughout the United States
will mark the 3-year anniversary of the infamous “Downing Street Memo,” a
secret British intelligence document that provides new and compelling
evidence that the Bush Administration deceived and misled the U.S. Congress
and the American people about the basis for going to war against Iraq.

The events will include town hall meetings, dramatic readings of the memo
and house parties. At least eight events will be hosted by or participated
in by members of Congress. United for Peace and Justice encourages you to
attend a July 23 Downing Street Event to bring attention to this memo,
whose contents could provide grounds for the impeachment of the U.S.
president.

The Downing Street Memo summarizes a meeting between high-level U.S. and
British officials. According to the memo, written by a senior British
intelligence officer, “Military action was now seen as inevitable. Bush
wanted to remove Saddam, through military action, justified by the
conjunction of terrorism and WMD. But the intelligence and facts were being
fixed around the policy.”

We must insist that our Congressional representatives and the U.S. media
investigate and report the truth about the Downing Street Memo and hold the
Bush administration accountable for its actions. The July 23 actions will
shine a spotlight on the Downing Street Memo and educate millions of people
in the United States who still haven’t heard about it.

This is the website of the After Downing Street coalition, which is
dedicated to pushing for a Congressional resolution of inquiry—the first
step in the impeachment process—into the Downing Street Memo and related
documents. According to a recent Zogby poll, 42 percent of voters polled
said they would support impeaching President Bush if it were established
that he lied about his reasons for the Iraq war. Let’s push for the inquiry
that would get to the bottom of this issue once and for all.

Thanks for all your hard work on behalf of peace and justice,
United for Peace and Justice

P.S. Since the mainstream media has done such a bad job covering the
Downing Street Memo up until now, another way you can support this campaign
is to call your local media outlets and ask them to cover the July 23
events. For a list of media outlets in your area, go to
