Tomgram: Jonathan Schell, Down the Iraqi Rabbit Hole
Tom Engelhardt & Jonathan Schell
Welcome to Iraq… but call it Vietnam. If we haven't all gone down the
rabbit hole in Baghdad and come out in the Saigon of another era, you can't
prove it by recent news from catastrophic Iraq. Eerie doesn't do it justice
it. In Washington, our leaders plead for patience; they insist, as they've
been doing for a year or more, as the President has done recently, that
this -- the latest bad news, whatever it may be, from the urb! an
battlefields and bomb-implanted highways of Iraq -- is "progress." They
swear that the most recent upsurge in violence and death (49 dead American
soldiers in the first 14 days of this month and scores upon scores of dead
Iraqis) represents, in Dick Cheney's recent phrase, "the last throes" of
the insurgency which will, the Vice President predicted, end within the
President's second term in office. Think "light at the end of the tunnel."
Think the era of Lyndon Johnson...

His Was Not To Wonder Why
Dante Zappala, Tompaine.com
...For the last six weeks of his life, Sherwood’s mission was to provide
convoy security for the Iraq Survey Group. He was killed in action,
providing site security for the group that was looking for weapons of mass
destruction. Mounting evidence indicates that the weapons’ non-existence
wasn’t a mistake. It was a ruse. The clouds surrounding Sherwood’s death
became even darker recently when I read the contents of a memo from the
upper echelons of the British ! government. The memo reiterates the fact
that our administration had every intention of invading Iraq in the summer
of 2002. The White House needed only to sell the idea to the American
people (...)My brother died scouring the Iraqi countryside not to protect
his country, but to satisfy the Bush administration’s public relations
agenda...

Morgan Reynolds’ Nine Eleven Inside Job: Corporate Media Silence is Golden
Kurt Nimmo, Another Day in the Empire
Are you surprised? The Morgan Reynolds story about nine eleven being an
“inside job” has received nada coverage beyond the original UPI story—that
is to say nada coverage in the corporate media (...) You’d think this would
be a HUGE story—a former Bushite declaring it is distinctly possible
America was attacked by its own government—but instead we get the following
(posted on the KLAS TV site): The! Michael Jackson verdict is was the lead
story across the world. The Jackson trial was found not just on tabloids
but also more high-minded newspapers. (...) Meanwhile, real news—news of
national and international significance—is scoffed at by corporate toadies,
for instance Los Angeles Times editorial page editor Michael Kinsley.
“Developing a paranoid theory and promoting it to the very edge of national
respectability takes ideological self-confidence,” Kinsley declared
sarcastically about the Downing Street Memo story two days ago...

Kurdish Officials Sanction Abductions in Kirkuk.
U.S. Memo Says Arabs, Turkmens Secretly Sent to the North
Steve Fainaru and Anthony Shadid, Washington Post Foreign Service
Police and security units, forces led by Kurdish political parties and
backed by the U.S. military, have abducted hundreds of minority Arabs and
Turkmens in this intensely volatile city and spirited them to prisons in
Kurdish-held northern Iraq, according to U.S. and Iraqi officials,
government documents and families of the victims. Seize! d off the streets
of Kirkuk or in joint U.S.-Iraqi raids, the men have been transferred
secretly and in violation of Iraqi law to prisons in the Kurdish cities of
Irbil and Sulaymaniyah, sometimes with the knowledge of U.S. forces. The
detainees, including merchants, members of tribal families and soldiers,
have often remained missing for months; some have been tortured, according
to released prisoners and the Kirkuk police chief...

FBI inspector general’s report: more evidence of government complicity in
9/11 attacks
Patrick Martin, WSWS
...The FBI inspector general’s report is, like all previous official
investigations into the events of 9/11, a cover-up for the state apparatus.
These investigations share one common feature: they completely exclude, a
priori, any question of government complicity in terrorist attacks.
Instead, we have the familiar litany of breast-beating over mistakes,
complacency, inattention and inadequate resources (..! .) Without 9/11,
there would be no US occupation of Iraq, putting an American army squarely
at the center of the world’s largest pool of oil. Without 9/11, there would
be no US bases across Central Asia, guarding the second largest source of
oil and gas...

Downing Street Memos – the silence is deafening
William Bowles, I'n'I
...As the memos pour forth from who knows where (somebody on the inside is
obviously very pissed off with the actions of the Blair government), aside
from the two articles in the Sunday Times, as far as I’ve been able to
ascertain not a single mainstream media outlet in the UK has picked up on
what is now known as DSM or the Downing Street Memos. Of course it’s not
too difficult to figure out why; the story is dynamite!...

"... but declined to identify him"
Imad Khadduri , Free Iraq
"Police sources in Iraq have revealed that a senior US diplomat escaped
unhurt when the military convoy in which he was traveling was struck by a
suicide car bomber. A U.S. embassy spokesman confirmed that the diplomat
was in the vicinity of the attack but declined to identify him. He added
that the diplomat was safe and that the attack did not appear to have
targeted him. The spokesman declined to disclose any other details" (...)
His name, according t! o reliable sources (this is indeed a neat corporate
media ploy), is Robert Ford , a POL (perhaps it stands for Political) Key
Officer at the US Embassy in Baghdad. How reliable is he? Well, he is the
one who broke the ice after Chalabi was chilled last February...

The Case for Impeaching George W. Bush
By Walter C. Uhler
...If intentionally deceiving the U.S. Congress is an impeachable offence,
then President Bush deserves impeachment—because every time he assured
congressmen that he hoped to avoid war, he deceived them. And if commencing
war without receiving Congressional approval is an impeachable
offense—which it certainly is—then President Bush merits impeachment. For,
strictly speaking, Bush took America to war in May 2002 when he authorized
the intense bombings desi! gned to degrade Iraq defense capacity, if not
provoke a response by Saddam (...) The decision to go to war also was made
before President Bush sought the approval of the United Nations. Absent an
imminent threat or actual attack, going to war without UN approval is a war
crime (...) Consequently, after his impeachment and removal from office,
President Bush and his co-conspirators should be prosecuted for war
crimes...

REGNAT POPULUS
Michael Rivero, What Really Happened
...Yes, there is oil in Iraq, but we're not getting much of that. Turns out
Bush is spending $5 billion a month to get out only $150 million in oil.
Good business sense like that wrecks companies. Also nations. As it turns
out, Israel is going to be getting a huge chunk of Iraq's oil! I guess that
should not some as a surprise. Despite never officially being a part of the
coalition of the willing, Israel was sure hot and bothered for American
kids to go off and ! invade Iraq. And they got to play at Abu Ghraib, and
in the Pentagon. So, not only did the US Government lie the American people
into a war of conquest, but also it looks like a foreign government was
calling at least some of the shots and is taking home a bunch of the
goodies...

al-Islam reported that a violent firefight raged for a quarter of an hour
between Iraqi Resistance forces in al-‘Amiriyah on the one hand and US
occupation troops and their “national guard stooges” on the other. The
fighting began after US occupation troo! ps and puppet so-called Iraq
national guards encircled the residential area in al-‘Amiriyah, south of

How Much Proof Needed Before the Truth Comes Out?
Kevin Zeese
The Downing Street Memo - minutes of a meeting with Prime Minister Tony
Blair and his advisors that said the U.S. was "fixing" the intelligence to
support the Iraq War - was not enough to get the mainstream U.S. media or
members of Congress to take the issue seriously. Now there is Downing II,
III, IV, V, VI and VII! As the evidence mounts, the failure of the media to
seriously investigate the issues is baffling. Why aren't they interviewing
current a! nd former U.S. military intelligence officials about these
reports from highest levels of British government? Isn't the media supposed
to investigate and get the truth for their readers and viewers?...

What Are You Going To Do Now America?
Nolan K. Anderson
...So, what are you going to do America? Now that the floodgates of
duplicity have been opened in Britain concerning the manipulation of
intelligence on Iraq’s WMD by our president and his advisors, what are you
going to do America? Continue to pray for American success in Iraq? And
after Iraq, will you pray for our success in Iran, and Syria and North
Korea? Or, will you begin to think about the impeachment of a scoundrel who
has robbed our country of its r! ightful place in the world of civilized
nations?...

disinformation emanating from the White house and the Pentagon. The
controversial Downing Street Memo was just one piece of evidence in a web

State, not to mention the media which fed the lies on WMD and Islamic

Counting heroes, but by whose measure for an Iraq death toll?
PIERRE TRISTAM
When I saw the headline over a brief editorial in Friday's Wall Street
Journal -- "12,000 Heroes" -- I thought the headline referred to Americans
wounded in Iraq: Finally, the major media were beginning to pay attention
to a more complete picture of the carnage in Iraq. I was wrong. So was the
Journal's headline, which was actually referring to Iraqi civilians killed
in the last 18 months. The Journal was calling the dead "heroes" becaus! e
it was buying into Iraqi Interior Minister Bayan Jabr's claim that those
civilians were killed exclusively by insurgents. Strange. On Sept. 24,
Knight Ridder Newspapers reported that "operations by U.S. and
multinational forces and Iraqi police are killing twice as many Iraqis --
most of them civilians -- as attacks by insurgents, according to statistics
compiled by the Iraqi Health Ministry." Health and Interior must have
different priorities...

Military Families Call for Truth Regarding Downing St. Memo
Common Dreams

families whose loved ones died as a result of the war in Iraq, will meet
with Members of Congress on June 15, 2005 to call on them to support a
"Resolution of Inquiry" into the so-called Downing Street Memo. Members of
Gold Star Families for Peace believe that the Downing Street Memo is a
"smoking gun" and validation that the invasion of Iraq was based on
prefabricated i! ntelligence. GSFP members who have lost their dearest
family members believe that their loved ones died needlessly, senselessly,
and avoidably in the aggression against Iraq...

Health System problems in the new Iraq
Mr. Bush, Thanks for the Spoiled Food
Dr. Salam Ismael
Today I am telling you about the new health system inside Iraq, which is
actually a disaster and a crime against the health of the Iraqi people. A
crime committed every day now in the name of freedom, free markets and the
globalization of the new Iraq. A crime killing, slowly and effectively, the
lives of so many Iraqi people. This is affecting men, woman, the elderly
and children both now and in the future. ! I quote from a speech of Mr.
Bush when he said, “I went to Iraq to bring medicine, food and freedom.”
Today I will tell you what type of food Mr. Bush was talking about...
