Living Conditions in Iraq: A Criminal Tragedy
Ghali Hassan, www.globalresearch.ca
History will acknowledge that the criminal policy of the U.S-Britain and
the illegal invasion of Iraq led to the current tragedy of the Iraqi
people. In addition, history will have to acknowledge that the Iraqi
people, alone, have resisted the genocidal sanctions and the U.S-British
Occupation of their country. A detailed study by the U.N. and Iraqi
officials found that life in Iraq has decayed significantly since U.S-led
foreign f! orces invaded and occupied the country, following a general
trend seen in most sectors since the imposition of the genocidal sanctions
in 1990. Iraqi civilians, mostly children, have suffered the consequences
of this criminal tragedy...

U.S. policies condemned
Losing hearts, minds and battles in Iraq
John Catalinotto, Workers World
U.S. imperialism has already lost its criminal adventure in Iraq. The
remaining question is when the Iraqi people, with help from anti-war forces
all over the world, will overcome the tremendous disadvantages they face
and drive out the occupation troops to liberate Iraq. No one questions the
Pentagon’s ability to inflict suffering on Iraqis. The U.S. occupation has
already created conditions of ov! er 50-percent unemployment, of
electricity on only one-third of the day in the heat of an Iraqi summer, of
insecurity and danger lurking in every street...

Deadly “disassembling”
P.M. Carpenter
...But there’s a deeper reality that Americans need to accept in place of
the phony “war on terrorism” demagoguery that has sustained the all too
substantial domestic support for the U.S. occupation, support that would
dry up overnight once the reality is accepted. And it’s a simple one.
Iraqis are resisting the occupation out of nationalism, not a fondness for
terrorism -- just as the Vietnamese resisted American occupation out of
nationalism, not a fondness for communism. U! .S. policy makers didn’t “get
it” then, and they deliberately don’t get it now. ..

Iraqi Resistance Report for events of Friday, 3 June 2005
Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member, editorial board,
the Free Arab Voice. ( http://www.freearabvoice.org )
...Palestinian refugees in Iraq addressed an appeal to all Arab and
international organizations, official and unofficial, concerned with
justice and human rights to intervene to stop the daily attacks that
official and non-official elements in occupied Iraq are now mounting
against their community (...) Mafkarat al-Islam’s corre! spondent who
reported the Palestinian appeal noted the particular hostility towards
Palestinians shown by organizations and followers of the sectarian
pro-American Shi‘i cleric ‘Ali as-Sistani, whose forces are largely run by
Iranian intelligence, even though the Iranian government claims to be a
supporter and defender of the Palestinian cause...

Are Weapons of Mass Destruction Being Planted in Iraq for Future "Discovery"
Stan Moore, Media Monitors Network
We continue to hear hints from various official sources in Iraq, including
elected Iraqi officials that some expect an eventual discovery of weapons
of mass destruction in Iraq. This might provide a sort of ex post facto
"legitimacy" to the invasion of Iraq. Of course, we know that American
forces scrutinized Iraq with the most sensitive testing and detection
equipment available for many months after t! he invasion. We know that
Iraqi military and government officials were detained and remain detained
for many months, perhaps subjected to coercive methods of information
retrieval in order to determine the existence and the location of any such
weapons. No weapons have been found, despite this intensive and very
expensive and thorough effort...

9000 Dead GIs In Iraq?
Brian Harring
There is excellent reason to believe that the Department of Defense is
deliberately not reporting a significant number of the dead in Iraq. We
have received copies of manifests from the MATS that show far more bodies
shipped into Dover AFP than are reported officially. The educated rumor is
that the actual death toll is in excess of 7,000. Given the officially
acknowledged number of over 15,000 seriously wounded, this elevated death
toll is far more realistic th! an the current 1,400+ now being officially
published. When our research is complete, and watertight, we will publish
the results along with the sources...

Killing Samir Kassir: Another Chapter in the Bushcon Plan for Total War
Kurt Nimmo, Another Day in the Empire
The assassination of Samir Kassir, Lebanon’s prominent anti-Syrian
journalist, sure is odd, coming as it did soon after the first stage of
Lebanon’s four-part parliamentary election. Naturally, the opposition,
organized and tutored by the National Endowment for Democracy and USAID
(both closely linked to US Intelligence organizations), immediately pointed
an accusatory finger at Syrian intelligence. “Sami! r Kassir was
assassinated by the remnants of the security agencies that control the
country and that is headed by Emile Lahoud,'’ declared Walid Jumblatt on
Future television. Mr. Jumblatt neglected to use an obvious
adjective—stupid...

Three GIs to Face Trial in Iraqi's Death
Robert Weller, The Associated Press
Three soldiers have been ordered to stand trial at Fort Carson on murder
charges in the suffocation of an Iraqi general, who died during an
interrogation 1 1/2 years ago. Chief Warrant Officers Lewis Welshofer and
Jeff L. Williams and Spc. Jerry Loper, all of the 3rd Armored Cavalry
Regiment, also face charges of assault and dereliction of duty during
combat operations, Army spokeswoman Kim Tisor said Thursday. Prosecutors
claim the sol! diers put Maj. Gen. Abed Mowhoush headfirst into a sleeping
bag, tied him up with an electrical cord and threw him to the ground. The
Army accuses the soldiers of sitting and standing on Mowhoush's chest...

Pentagon details mishandling of Quran
Detainees’ copies of holy book kicked, splashed with urine
Associated Press
The Pentagon on Friday released new details about mishandling of the Quran
at the Guantanamo Bay prison for terror suspects, confirming that a soldier
deliberately kicked the Muslim holy book and that an interrogator stepped
on a Quran and was later fired for “a pattern of unacceptable behavior.” In
other confirmed incidents, water balloons thrown by prison guards caused an
unspeci! fied number of Qurans to get wet; a guard’s urine came through an
air vent and splashed on a detainee and his Quran; and in a confirmed but
ambiguous case, a two-word obscenity was written in English on the inside
cover of a Quran...

Oil !! .... What oil ??
Imad Khadduri , Free Iraq
...Before his departure to Baghdad in the previous month (November, 2004),
I had corresponded with Hussain al-Shahrastani, who is now Vice Chairman of
the 'Iraqi Parliament', and pointedly asked him, as he was departing to
Iraq, "Do you know where the Iraqi oil money is going?" He admitted that he
did not know. I humbly requested that he might find out, once he gets
there; and would he kindly inform us who are concerned about the scale of
corruption that is becomi! ng apparently rampant in Iraq's ministries? The
request was ignored. In exasperation, I posted the question again: - Where
is the Iraqi oil money? ...

Family reunion that ended with detention in 'Basra's Belmarsh'
Rory Carroll, The Guardian
It was meant to be nothing more than a family gathering, a chance for Hilal
Jedda's four London-based children to meet their Iraqi relatives. Last
September they flew to United Arab Emirates, sailed to Basra and drove to
Baghdad. The relatives had no British visas and Iraq was the only place
they could be together (...) But on October 10 American and Iraqi troops
stormed the family's house in Baghdad, put a hood over Mr Jedd! a and flew
him to Shaibah, a British military base outside Basra...

"Peddling Lies About How They Were Mistreated"
"Diassembling" the "Absurd" Amnesty International Report
GARY LEUPP, CounterPunch
...The Bush administration knowingly and willfully attacked a sovereign
country, illegally, unprovoked, on the basis of deliberately manufactured
lies, using the emotions produced by 9-11, general ignorance, and a
compliant press to promote the cause. Seizing control of a country whose
population responded to occupation with sullen caution or natural,
predictable resistance, ! the occupiers rounded up thousands of people
doing what people typically do under such circumstances. Of course kids
with Kalashnikovs are going to shoot at the invaders. (What would kids in
Texas do if confronted with analogous events?)...

car bombing outside a home near Balad late on Thursday. Ten Iraqis were
killed and 12 wounded," Major Wes Hayes said on Friday, adding that US-led
forces had responded and the Iraqi authorities were now at the scene...

IS ANYONE OUT THERE LISTENING?
A DISTURBING INQUIRY
Contributing Editor - TvNewsLIES.org - June 2005
The man holding the news conference used that phrase again, the one about
our winning in Iraq, and they let him get away with it. The pseudo
journalists at the White House news conference let him get away with it and
I came that close to smashing my TV with a baseball bat. It’s gotten that
bad. The man went on to say, “I believe we're making really good progress
in Iraq,” and I had a really w! ild knee-jerk reaction: I stood up and
screamed. ”NO,” I actually yelled out loud, “NO, you liar….it’s not true!”
(...) DIDN’T YOU PEOPLE HEAR WHAT HE JUST SAID? IS THERE NO ONE OUT THERE
WHO HEARD WHAT I DID? WHY ARE YOU JUST SITTING THERE? WHY ARE YOU LETTING
HIM GET AWAY WITH THE LIES? WHERE IS THE OUTRAGE? For Heaven’s sake, WHY AM
I THE ONLY ONE WHO’S SCREAMING?...

The Marquis De Sade
Jolly Roger, What Really Happended
...I would like you to address that fact that your moral view might have
been changed. If you’re old enough, I would like you to ask yourself how
you might have reacted twenty years ago to knowledge that our government
was torturing people. If your present reaction is any different that it
would have been twenty years ago, you should examine the information you
received since then that has caused this transformation. I’m willing to bet
that the events of 9-11! had a lot to do with any changes that may have
occurred...

UN: Weapons Equipment Missing in Iraq By Edith M. Lederer
The Associated Press
UN satellite imagery experts have determined that material that could be
used to make biological or chemical weapons and banned long-range missiles
has been removed from 109 sites in Iraq, UN weapons inspectors said in a
report obtained Thursday. UN inspectors have been blocked from returning to
Iraq since the US-led war in 2003 so they have been using satellite photos
to see what happened to the sites that were subject to UN monitorin! g
because their equipment had both civilian and military uses...

$1B spent on Baghdad embassy, $1.3B to go
Pamela Hess, UPI Pentagon Correspondent
Two years after the invasion of Iraq, the United States has spent $990
million on U.S. "embassy" operations there, but none of that has been put
toward building a permanent home for the U.S. diplomatic presence,
according to a report for Congress. That project will cost taxpayers
another $1.3 billion, only $20 million of which has been put toward the
project so far, according to an April report from the Congressional
Research Servic! e...

Judge: Release Abu Ghraib Videos, Photos
LARRY NEUMEISTER, The Associated Press
A judge has ordered the government to release four videos from Abu Ghraib
prison and dozens of photographs from the same collection as photos that
touched off the Iraqi prisoner abuse scandal a year ago. The federal judge
issued the order late Wednesday requiring the Army to release the material
to the American Civil Liberties Union to comply with the Freedom of
Information Act. The ACLU said the material would show that the abuse was!
"more than the actions of a few rogue soldiers"...
