What We Iraqis Want
Sister Meriam from Occupied Iraq - Today's Alternative News
We want the Americans to go back home. Iraq is our country, not theirs.
However, the Americans seem to think it is their country. It is not theirs
now, nor will it ever be theirs, unless they kill all of us, men, women and
children.
We are raising our children to resist this illegal, this immoral, this
un-Christian occupation. I am a Christian, my husband is a Muslim, we both
want the Americans out. They are causing us nothing but harm, sickness,
poverty and lawlessness...

"He called me from Iraq: 'I have no idea what we're doing here, mom.'
Interview with Nadia McCaffrey, member of the BRussells Tribunal Advisory
Committee (Inge Van de Merlen - May 18 2005)
September 12, 2001: Day 1 after the attacks on the WTC towers in the US.
34-year-old Patrick McCaffrey, husband and father of two, was upset enough
to join the Californian National Guard. The National Guard is usually
deployed in case of disasters or other emergency situations within the
United States. A few days after 9/11 ! the Bush administration, without
much warning, changed the regulations so that Guard units could be sent to
Iraq. Patrick was killed on June 22, 2004 and in the record is registered
as 'casualty #848'. "My son never thought he'd find himself in the war
zone," his mother Nadia McCaffrey said. Since his death she has been
traveling around the world to try to convince people of the insanity of the
war in Iraq...

Losing in Iraq
Stewart Nusbaumer, Intervention Magazine
...If Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Rice and the other fearless
Republican hawks had tours in Vietnam instead of tours for draft
deferments, they would have not been giddy for this war with Iraq. They
would have run just like they personally ran from wars in Korea and
Vietnam. If they had not slipped out the back door of their generations'
wars, they would have known that Iraq was a trap...

COWBOYS AND MUSLIMS
Malcom Lagauche
In the U.S., kids have always played games pitting the "good guys" against
the "bad guys." "Cops and Robbers" and "Cowboys and Indians" are two
timeless pursuits of American youngsters. Lately, there has been a slight
change in one of the games. The new sport in town is called "Cowboys and
Muslims." Many U.S. citizens use this term in a perverted sense of pride.
In their minds, all Muslims are Arabs and all Arabs are Muslims and all
must be eradicated...

We Will Rape Your Women, Heck We Will Rape Our Women, But We Would Never
Flush the Koran
James Glaser
...It is widely reported that many American military women serving in Iraq,
need guards in order to take a shower because of fear of sexual assaults by
their fellow soldiers. Washington wants the world to believe that some of
these same troops would never flush a Koran. American Soldiers have been
indicted for raping Iraqi women, but we have no numbers and because we keep
no numbers on the number of Iraqi women a! nd children killed in this war,
it should be no surprise that we keep no count of Iraqi women reporting
that they have been raped by Americans...

Criminal US, there will be no honorable exit for you, from Iraq!
Abu Assur
You thought that the world, was just a jungle, a brothel, an open arena, a
free market in which, you allow yourself to behave like pimps, whores and
savage beasts, satisfy your sadistic low instincts and loot and kill at
random. You imagined that you were going to the Land of revelation, for a
nice stroll, an outing, for another plunder, another razzia, another foray
and another raid. Hey let's go to Iraq to kill for fun and, slaughter ano!
ther American Indian indigenous tribe, start another Palestine, and pinch
their land!...

UN report finds
US war in Iraq yields a social "tragedy"
David Walsh, WSWS
A new study issued by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)
reveals what the Iraqi Minister of Planning Barham Salih describes as "a
rather tragic situation of the quality of life in Iraq." What this minister
in the Baghdad puppet regime did not care to say, unsurprisingly, is that
this disaster for the Iraqi people is attributable overwhelmingly to the
unrelenting assault by US imperialism over the past 15 yea! rs and more...

Sunni and Shia Iraqis, and Al-Hakim
Raed Jarrar
As I predicted yesterday, the Sunni leaders accused Badr brigades of
killing civilians today (...) This comes after the CMS asked both the
minister of defense and the minister of interior to resign (...) At the
same time, insurgents gunned down a senior Iraqi Interior Ministry
official. All of these events happened after two days of the Minister of
Defence's orders to stop attacking Mosques, the thing that Hakim and the US
army seem not to be taking seriously (...)! Hakim is the enemy of all
Iraqis; Sunni and Shia Iraqis...

Newsweek's gift for a White House set to pounce
Ellis Henican, Newsday
It was Christmas in May at the White House. And what a glittering little
present Newsweek magazine delivered to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.! It was truly
the perfect gift for a beleaguered administration trying to convince the
world - not to mention its own restive citizenry - that basic American
values are still being upheld in this age of terror, even as we fight a
scary new enemy all around the world. After Abu Ghraib, after the naked
Iraqi pris! oners stacked in human pyramids, after "leash girl," after
hoods and handcuffs in the midday sun, after the deluge of scathing reports
from Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, after the whole messy
lot of it - here, at last, was something the Bush administration could
unwrap with glee: An allegation of Islamic prisoner abuse at Guantanamo Bay
that could not immediately be confirmed...

U.S. and Iraqi military forces detain journalists, whereabouts unknown
Aljazeera.com
Eight Iraqi journalists' whereabouts are unknown after being detained by
U.S. and Iraqi forces. The US-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ)
is demanding an explanation from U.S. and Iraqi military forces regarding
the whereabouts of least eight Iraqi journalists who have been detained
since March 2005. CPJ called on U.S. and Iraqi officials to publicly
explain the basis for the journalists' continued detention. According ! to
CPJ, U.S. military spokesman Lt. Col. Steve Boylan said that the
journalists pose a "security risk to the Iraqi people and coalition
forces." No further details were given...

The Newsweek Retraction
Matthew Rothschild
...What is the logic of Newsweek's view here? That even if the story were
true, it should have backed down and not published the piece because of the
reaction that might occur? Let's be clear: To avoid rioting in the Muslim
world, the answer is not for the press in the United States to muzzle
itself. The answer is for the United States to stop torturing Muslims.
Newsweek's obligation is to publish the truth. If it did so in this case,
it has nothing to retract but its r! etraction...

General strike against occupation in Iraqi city of Ramadi
Simon Assaf, Socialist Worker
Iraqis in the city of Ramadi and neighbouring towns held a general strike
last weekend in a protest against a blockade by US troops. The strike was
called as US troops mounted a major offensive on villages and towns along
the Euphrates river up to the border with Syria. Sheikh Majeed al-Gaood, of
the Duleim tribe from Ramadi, spoke to Socialist Worker by telephone from
the Jordanian capital, Amman. He said that on Friday 7 May! , after US
troops surrounded the city, "a call came from the mosques for a general
strike in Ramadi and neighbouring towns. Schools, markets and offices shut
down in protest at the blockade"...

McClellan: Punishing Newsweek
Kurt Nimmo, Another Day in the Empire
...After Bush's invasion and mass murder spree, the people of Afghanistan
were desperately in need of blankets, clothing, medicines, tents,
mattresses, generators, water purification tablets, soap and other
essential supplies. Millions of children were in need of immunization
against preventable diseases and "psycho-social services to help [them]
overcome the trauma of war," i.e., Bush's nasty and immoral invasion (...)
Iraq is a mess, of course,! thanks to the all-war-all-the-time gang in the
White House and the Pentagon. Malnutrition is at a staggering rate in the
country (...). According to the United Nations, that irksome multinational
organization soon to be knocked down a notch or two (or ten stories) by
John Bolton, acute malnutrition rates among Iraqi children under 5 rose
late last year to 7.7 per cent from 4 per cent after Bush got rid of Saddam
in April 2003...

The "Illusion" of Two "Parties"
Jack Dalton, Project for the Old American Century
...The "smoking gun" memos were made public on March 5th, less than two
weeks ago. 88 members of the House of Representatives signed a joint letter
demanding the White House explain them. After all, everyone around Bush,
and Bush included, stated over and over again that there were no plans in
place to invade Iraq; and that they would make all decisions based on the
"best available intelligence." (...) A few days ago, these Democrat! ic
Party voices of opposition had the chance to, in part, show "what they are
made of" and take a stand against the $82 billion supplemental earmarked
for Iraq, and everything it represents (...) Now here's the kicker — when
the Senate votes were tallied up, the supplemental and all the tucked away
provisions like the one above, the vote was unanimous--100 to 0...

The Stupidity of George Galloway's Enemies
Kurt Nimmo, Another Day in the Empire
...Even though it was established some time ago that the evidence allegedly
linking Galloway to Saddam Hussein is a poorly crafted fake..., and
Galloway successfully sued the Daily Telegraph for publishing a defamatory
story connecting him to corruption in the so-called Oil for Food program,
the "liberal" Los Angeles Times leads off a story posted on its web site
this morning claiming Galloway is "linked to illegal payments," even th!
ough this is not established and is, in fact, a preposterous accusation
minus any grounding in reality. For right-wingers, even apparently on the
editorial staff of the Los Angeles Times, it stands to reason that anybody
who takes a reasoned and principled stand against the slaughter in Iraq is
a Saddam stooge and supporter of terrorists and various bogeymen, more than
a few (like al-Zarqawi) issuing from a crude propaganda mill in the
basement of the White House or Pentagon...

American Hypocracy* At Work
Did Newsweek Damage America's Image?
Harold Williamson, www.dissidentvoice.org
...The White House jumped on this as if it were a story by Dan Rather.
White House spokesman Scott McClellan was quoted as saying, "People have
lost their lives. The image of the United States abroad has been damaged."
Let me make sure I heard that correctly . . . . "The image of the United
States abroad has been damaged." Can you imagine McClellan saying that
after the recent publication of the ! "Downing Street memo" that is nothing
short of the smoking gun needed to confirm that the Bush administration
cooked the books in order to wage an illegal war with Iraq that has ruined
the lives of millions of people. This must be the image that McClellan
thinks has been damaged...

Of Nuclear Giants and Ethical Infants
Anwaar Hussain, Fountainhead
The United Nations Organization was set up by the victorious allies at the
end of World War II. The founding charter was endorsed by 51 countries.
Today 191 states send delegates to the General Assembly. The opening of
21st century witnessed a severe mauling of this august body. The supposed
custodian of world peace, the United Nations was hammered into subservience
in the run-up to the Iraq war. The United States and Britain, the Big Two
out of t! he Big Five, trampled upon the world opinion with a rude disdain.
Loyalties were bought and sold in plain sight...

Did Askar Security Lie About Recruits for Iraq?
AllAfrica.com
...A savvy international firm like Kroll Associates with its African branch
in Johannesburg must be fully aware of the substantial profits to be made

going rate of hiring an American or Briton to do the same deadly work. Was
Askar Security lying when it said the 700 men it recruited in Kampala last
week were headed for Iraq? Probably not...

A Virtual Tribual
Writing Tickets for Amerian War Crimes
By MANUEL GARCÍA, Jr.
Imagine a web site presenting point-by-point indictments of outstanding
American war criminals. It is easy speak of McNamara, Kissinger, Bush and
the neo-cons among others as major (and minor) war criminals, for
instigating wars and supporting violent international crimes in Vietnam in
the 1960s and 1970s, Latin America in the 1980s, and the Middle East from
the 1990's. The literature on this subject is vast; William Blum's ! book
"Killing Hope" can be seen as merely an abstract of the subject. With such
a wealth of documentation (evidence?), it must be possible for a small
group of people knowledgeable in both US and international law to draft a
precise list of indictments, each charge citing a specific statute that has
been violated...

Sweet victory in Iraq a result of Iran's support: Talabani
Tehran Times
Iraq's President Jalal Talabani said on Tuesday night that Iran was on the
side of Iraq at very difficult days. "Iran was at our side in black and
difficult days, and this sweet victory is the result of efforts and support
by Iran in the past," Talabani told the visiting Iranian Foreign Minister
Kamal Kharrazi. Kharrazi also accepted an invitation to visit Iran soon.
Kharrazi said Iran would support the Iraqi nation and government as before
a! nd called the formation of the new Iraqi government as great victory. In
a separate meeting with leader of the Supreme Council for Islamic
Revolution in Iraq (SCIRI) Seyyed Abdul Aziz al Hakim on Wednesday Kharrazi
also said Iran is ready to broaden all-out cooperation with Iraq...

Iraq Torture: 'Claims Against Soldiers Swept under Carpet'
Nick Allen, PA
Allegations by nine Iraqi men who claim to have been tortured at the hands
of British soldiers at an aid camp were set out today (...) One claims he
was kicked so hard in the genitals that he cannot have children and another
says that British soldiers tried to get him to cut off the finger of a
fellow Iraqi. Mistreatment of civilian detainees at Breadbasket emerged in
"trophy" photographs taken by a soldier, which included scenes of sexual !
humiliation. Four low-ranking soldiers were convicted over their roles in
the scandal at courts-martial in Germany earlier this year. Two of the men
are appealing. But Mr Shiner said the court-martial process had been a
"farce", a "put-up job" and produced an "Alice in Wonderland" version of
events...
