Excerpts from "Iraq: Eye to Eye with the Occupation"
The Historical Roots of Resistance
Mohamed Hassan and David Pestieau, EPO publishing house - www.epo.be
...The US-UK war for the control of oil did not begin in 2003, or even in
1991, but in the 1920s. In order to understand the Iraqi resistance to the
present occupation, we have to go back to the beginning of contemporary
Iraqi history. A history of colonisation and imperialism on the one hand,
nationalism and resistance by the Iraqi people on the! other....

I PIANI USA PER IL DOMINIO MILITARE GLOBALE
Il Pentagono rende pubblico il riassunto di un documento segreto
Michel Chossudovsky - Globalresearch - www.resistenze.org

Iraq's economic catastrophe
Zaid Al-Ali, Al-Ahram Weekly
...Incredible as it may seem, in the past two years, Iraq's economic
situation has worsened, living standards have declined, and poverty as well
as child malnutrition have increased. According to a number of
non-governmental organisations in Iraq, the unemployment rate could be as
high as 65 per cent, a figure that is not disputed by the Central
Statistics Bureau in Baghdad. In addition, the World Food Programme
estimates that one in four Iraqis survive on ! food rations that are
distributed by the Ministry of Trade, while 2.6 million Iraqis are so poor
that they are forced to resell part of their rations in order to buy basic
necessities such as medicine...

Porte dell'inferno aperte in Iraq
Ayatollah Jawad al-Khalisi, Peacelink
L'occupazione anglo-americana sta avvelenando tutti i processi politici nel
paese e In Medio Oriente. Le elezioni tenutesi in gennaio sotto il
controllo delle forze occupanti non sono state né libere né corrette.
Invece di essere un passo verso la soluzione dei problemi dell'Iraq sono
state usate per prolungare il dominio straniero sulla popolazione
irachena...

Suffer the children
Ken Sanders, Online Journal Contributing Writer
Last week, the United States denied the allegations of the United Nations'
Special Rapporteur on the right to food, Jean Ziegler, that the U.S.-led
invasion of Iraq has doubled malnutrition among Iraqi children (...)
Regardless of the Bush administration's laughably hypocritical criticisms
of Ziegler's statements, Ziegler is not alone in blaming the U.S.-led
invasion of Iraq for increased rates of mortality and malnutrition among
Iraqis, children! in particular. In fact, Ziegler's comments were not based
upon his own observations. Rather, they were based upon previous reports by
and findings of UNICEF, the World Food Program, and Johns Hopkins
University...

Arabiya reporter detained in Iraq - media watchdog
Reuters
A cameraman for Dubai-based television station Al Arabiya has been detained
for more than a week in Iraq, according to New York-based media watchdog
the Committee to Protect Journalists. The CPJ said in a statement late
yesterday that Iraqi forces had detained Wael Issam, a Palestinian
cameraman on assignment for the station, at Baghdad International Airport
on March 28, according to Al Arabiya. Issam had been traveling to the
station's headquarters in Du! bai...

The resistance will go on
Mousa Al-Husseini, Al-Ahram Weekly
On 11 April 2003, Iraqi resistance set out to free Iraq. Since then, it
managed not only to restore pride to all Iraqis and Arabs, but also to make
Bush's racist administration change tack repeatedly. But the conflict in
Iraq is not just between the occupation forces and the resistance. The
picture is quite murky, for someone is plotting behind the scenes. Some
individuals or groups are murdering hundreds of innocent people. These
individuals and groups! are not part of the resistance. They are foisted
upon the scene to tarnish and discredit the valiant resistance...

Iraqi Resistance Report for events of Thursday, 7 April 2005
Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member, editorial board,
the Free Arab Voice. http://www.freearabvoice.org
...Kurdish chauvinist and long-time lackey of the US Central Intelligence
Agency and the Zionist Mossad, 71-year old Jalal at-Talibani, took the oath
of puppet "president" of Iraq on Thursday. The "inauguration" publicity
show was held under intense American guard inside the headquarters of the
US occupation in the area of the Re! publican Palace in Baghdad, called the
"green zone" by the invaders. Underlining the sectarian division of the
country imposed by the US occupation, Ghazi al-Yawur, a US stooge of Sunni
Arab background, and `Adil `Abd al-Mahdi, a Shi`i collaborator, took oaths
as "vice-presidents" of the puppet "authority"...

NOT GUILTY!
BY REASON OF THE PRESIDENCY!
TvNewsLIES.ORG EXPOSES THE VERDICT
TvNewsLIES.ORG
...The Commission that discovered the crime chose not to investigate the
criminals! Despite earlier promises to do so, they decided not to report on
how George Bush and his warmongering cohorts used the intelligence they
were given. They would have nothing to say about the way Bush/PNAC cartel
reflected the intelligence information in their presentations to Congress
and the public. As a result, Georg! e W. Bush was exonerated of serious
violations of Constitutional and International Law without a single day of
investigation. Despite a mountain of incriminating evidence, George W. Bush
was off the hook. Neither he nor anyone in his administration would be held
accountable for taking the nation into an illegal and immoral war under
false pretenses...

What's behind the new Iraq
Pepe Escobar
It took more than nine weeks, fiery haggling and backroom deals for Iraq's
politicians to compose a new government. The president is Kurdish warlord
Jalal Talabani of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, who enjoys close ties
with both Washington and Tehran. The two vice presidents are: Adel Abdel
Mahdi of the United Iraqi Alliance (UIA), a senior Shi'ite leader of the
Supreme Council of Islamic Revolution (SCIRI) in Iraq and the interim
finance minister, and a former Maoist! turned free-marketer who last
December promised in Washington to privatize the Iraqi oil industry; and
the previous president, Ghazi al-Yawer, a former exile and influential
Sunni sheikh of the Sammar tribe. Talabani is finally set to appoint Da'wa
Party senior leader Ibrahim Jaafari of the UIA as prime minister...

Israel has no real interest in attacking Iran
Xymphora
Kaveh L Afrasiabi lists a whole bunch of good reasons why an Israeli attack
on Iran is highly unlikely. I still think all this talk about Iran is a
ruse to disguise what Israel and its American stooges are really up to.
Israel has no real interest in attacking Iran, especially if long-term
plans are to build some kind of ongoing semi-friendly relationship with
non-Arab Iran (which will be Israel's next-door neighbor once Greater
Israel is in place). The Ameri! can stooges won't do anything without
Sharon's instructions, so Iran may be the safest place on earth right now...

Identity politics
Hussein Shabaan
9 April marks the second anniversary of the occupation of Iraq. The war,
the results of which were a foregone conclusion, lasted only three weeks.
It opened on 20 March with an intensive aerial bombardment and ended with
the American occupation of Baghdad. This invasion not only toppled the
regime that had ruled Iraq for the past 35 years, it toppled the entire
edifice of the Iraqi state as it dismantled its military and security
apparatuses and destroyed its vital urban and econ! omic infrastructure.
Even cultural institutions, such as museums, libraries and universities,
were not spared destruction...

The myth of an Israeli strike on Iran
Kaveh L Afrasiabi
There is much talk these days of an impending Israeli military strike
against Iran's nuclear facilities, fueled most recently by a London Times
article indicating that the Israeli parliament had given the initial nod to
the planned attack - to take care of what the Israeli politicians of
various persuasions regularly describe as the "biggest existential threat"
to the Jewish state. Yet a careful examination of the various logistical,
operational feasibility ! as well as geopolitical and regional aspects or
consequences of this much-debated scenario leads us to the opposite
conclusion, namely, the impractical and unworkable nature of the so-called
"Osirak option", named after Israel's successful aerial bombardment of
Iraq's nuclear reactor in 1981...

An Old U.S. Foe Rises Again in Iraq
Shiite Mahdi Army Growing Bolder in South
Anthony Shadid, Washington Post Foreign Service
Over the loudspeakers set up in this small town in a backwater of southern
Iraq, the commands came in staccato bursts. "Forward!" a man clad in black
shouted to the militiamen. "March!" Column after column followed through
the dusty, windswept square. Some of the marchers wore the funeral shawls
of prospective martyrs (...) "At your service, Sadr! At your service,
Moqtada!" th! e men chanted in formation. "We hear a voice calling us!"
"The tanks do not terrify us," others joined in. "We're resisting! We're
resisting!"...

New Iraqi Govt to Confront Future With US Military
Aaron Glantz
...A United Nations Security Council resolution authorizing the occupation
ends in December. After that, the occupation will be technically illegal.
Chris Toensing of the Washington-based Middle East Research and Information
Project says the Shi'ite United Iraqi Alliance, which won the most votes in
January's election, has already abandoned its election promise to demand a
timeline for U.S. withdrawal. "Right now, the United States is the
protector o! f the United Iraqi Alliance," Toensing said, noting the U.S.
military had promised to protect whatever government was elected...

Un-Embed the Media
Amy Goodman and David Goodman, Baltimore Sun
...Editorials profess to being shocked - shocked! - by the government's
covert propaganda campaign in which, as The New York Times revealed March
13, at least 20 federal agencies have spent $250 million creating and
sending fake news segments to local TV stations. But the media have only
themselves to blame for most people - including TV news managers - not
being able to distinguish journalism from propaganda. The line between news
and propaganda was! trampled not only by the public relations agencies
hired by the government but also by reporters in the deserts of Iraq...

Who’s Better Off?
Rep. Ron Paul, MD
...Sure, there are only 800,000 Christians living in Iraq, but under Saddam
Hussein they were free to practice their religion. Tariq Aziz, a Christian,
served in Saddam Hussein’s cabinet as Foreign Minister – something that
would never happen in Saudi Arabia, Israel, or any other Middle Eastern
country. Today, the Christian churches in Iraq are under attack and
Christians are no longer safe. Many Christians have been forced to flee
Iraq and migrate to Syria...

The humanitarian cover for the brutal embargo of Iraq
The real oil-for-food scandal
Socialist Worker
...Meanwhile, as health experts warned, the sanctions led to a sharp
increase in infant mortality and deaths from easily preventable water-borne
disease. One UNICEF study suggested that the number of extra deaths of
Iraqi children under five years of age because of the sanctions was more
than 500,000. That’s why two heads of the oil-for-food program--Denis
Halliday and Hans von Sponeck--resign! ed in protest. Halliday called the
sanctions a form of genocide when he stepped down to dedicate himself to
