LE TRE "I" DELLA GAD IN IRAQ: INGENUI, IDIOTI, O INFAMI?
Mondocane fuorilinea, Fulvio Grimaldi

invece portato morte, distruzione e tortura...

Anche in Vietnam l'affluenza al voto era stata buona...
Sami Ramadani, The Guardian

Bush's State of the Union: Billions for Endless War and Empire-- Cuts in
Healthcare, Education, and Social Security
International Action Center
...Today, the Bush Administration is bringing "democracy" to Iraq with
bombs, bullets, depleted uranium weapons, and the torture chambers of Abu
Ghraib. More than 100,000 Iraqis have been killed. Fallujah, a historic
city, has been destroyed. This election will only result in greater
frustration and anger from the Iraqi people. Whatever the actual size of
the turnout was,! the overriding expectation of those who voted was that
the election would lead to an end to the occupation of their country. When
they realize that the Bush has no plans to end the occupation, this
frustration will fuel an already widespread resistance..

WSWS replies to letters on Iraq's election and the US occupation
WSWS
...There is no doubt that the US war in Iraq, along with the punishing
economic sanctions that preceded it, have decimated the country's social
foundations, economy and infrastructure, and exacerbated sectarian
loyalties and divisions. Under these conditions, an election can produce
decidedly anti-democratic results, as the disintegration of Yugoslavia at
the end of the 1980s demonstrated. The vote in Iraq has the potential for
encouraging Balk! an-style "ethnic cleansing" in cities like Kirkuk and
elsewhere...

Iraqi Resistance Report for events of Friday, 4 February 2005
Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member, editorial board,
the Free Arab Voice.
In a dispatch posted at 9:05pm Mecca time Friday night, the Mafkarat
al-Islam correspondent in al-Fallujah reported that intermittent armed
clashes were taking place in the eastern neighborhoods of the city between
US aggressor troops and the Iraqi Resistance. The correspondent said that
the fighting had been raging, at time of writing, for four hours and tha! t
clouds of smoke were rising from various places where engagements had taken
place. US aircraft had fired three rockets into the area...

Vote for Food: Confession and More Links
Raed Jarrar, Raed in the Middle
I mentioned the fact that there were very strong rumors in Iraq that were
putting people under pressure to go and vote. Khalid, my brother living in
Baghdad, told me about this a week ago, and I found an article on the
Washington Post mentioning it too. The Washington Post published another
piece containing a confession from an Iraqi official saying: "Even though
we spread a rumor in the city saying anyone who doesn't vote will be !
deprived of their food ration, only 10 people voted . . . mostly old men."
said Khalaf Muhammed, 43, the electoral commission official in charge of a
polling station in the city's center -- who acknowledged spreading the
false rumor to try to lure voters...

Iraq Oil-For-Food Audit Finds No Widespread Abuse
Haider Rizvi
After spending months combing through thousands of documents and
questioning scores of officials, the investigators of alleged
irregularities in the U.N.-led Oil-for-Food program in Iraq acknowledge
that they have so far failed to find a smoking gun. However, in an interim
report released Thursday, they accused the world body of failing to abide
by the rules to assure fairness, transparency and accountability...

Elections' Aftermath
Ghali Hassan
...Juan Cole, the American Blogger and textbooks "experts" on Iraq told
C-Span Washington Journal on 27 January 2005, that, "Iraq is like South
Africa during the Apartheid regime [a major US ally], the US had to invade
and change the regime of Saddam and give power to the Shiites majority".
The comment is not only ill informed and misleading; it is foolish. Also,
Shiites as a majority is very disputed figure in Iraq itself. Mr Cole also
said that he studied Iraq in the US from te! xtbooks because he "couldn't
get visa to do fieldwork in Iraq during Saddam regime". This is utterly
untrue. Iraq has been very frequent destination by Westerners, such as
workers, scientists and archaeologists (...) Only in the West people are
ranting about Iraq's division and Iraq's ethnicity. The elections were
designed to establish sectarianism in Iraq, not democracy...

"Saddam Hussein The Fighter, the Thinker and the Man"
Part II, CHAPTER 17: The Strategy of Liberation and the Policy of Stages
Amir Iskander, Al-Moharer
"World public opinion must understand that the conflict is not a religious
conflict between the Arabs and the Zionist entity as the Zionists try to
make out, or as some Arab policies and media previously gave the
impression. In order to understand the reality of the long-term Arab
viewpoint advocating a secular Palestinian state where all citizens, no
matter! what their religion, live together on joint territory, under one
rule, and with equal rights of a Palestinian essence, we must demonstrate
it by taking practical and convincing measures"...

Rumsfeld Debating Whether to Avoid Germany
Charles Aldinger, Reuters
Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said on Thursday he has not decided
whether to attend an international security conference next week in
Germany, where he might be subject to arrest on a war-crimes complaint. "I
have not made a final decision on that (attendance). And there are several
factors," Rumsfeld told reporters when asked if he would go to the
prestigious annual private Munich Conference on Security Policy Feb. 12-13

U.S. Soldiers Head North To Seek Asylum
Canada Gave Asylum To Vietnam War Defectors
NBC11.com.
During the 1960s and 70s some 50,000 Americans resisted the Vietnam War and
moved to Canada, rather than serve in a war they didn't believe in. Canada
didn't back the Vietnam War and gave asylum to those defectors. Now,
there's a new war that Canada doesn't support and history is starting to
repeat itself with soldiers starting to cross the boarder so they don't
have to go to Iraq...

Same Faces Behind Sham US And Iraqi 'Elections'
Christopher Bollyn, American Free Press
...Sham "democratic" elections have been used by the occupying powers in
Iraq, Afghanistan, and Palestine, to bestow an aura of legitimacy on their
puppet governments. The three elections, praised by the mainstream media as
triumphs of "democracy," were imposed on captive nations held "under the
gun." In Afghanistan, Hamid Karzai, the installed ruler and former
consultant for the energy company Unocal, was elected president. I! n
Palestine, Mahmoud Abbas, a man with virtually no support among the people,
but popular with U.S., British, and Israeli leaders, was elected president.
Meanwhile, the popular leader of the Palestinian people, Marwan Barghouti,
languishes in an Israeli prison...

Iraqi 'Elections'
xymphora
...The original statement that the turnout was 72% was immediately admitted
to be a fabrication, and the later guess of 60% is equally suspect. We
don't know, and we'll never know, what the real turnout was, as the people
monitoring the election are entirely controlled by the Americans. Frankly,
the turnout is as likely to be 5% as it is to be 60% (...) The most tragic
element of this election is that writers who call themselves moderates or
progressives are now starting to write that ! this election validates the
entire Bush world-view. Resistance is now futile, and there is officially
no American opposition to the Bush warmongers. If such an obviously
questionable election can make the worst war crimes right, Bush is out of
control and the whole world is in great peril...

"The U.S. Supreme Court is AWOL on Iraq"
Gene C. Gerard, Axis of Logic
In December, the Supreme Court opted not to hear the civil suit Clair
Callan Vs. President George W. Bush. The plaintiff in the suit is a senior
citizen and former Congressman from Nebraska. The case has slowly made its
way through the lower courts, which have rejected it on the grounds that
they have no jurisdiction to hear the suit, or that Mr. Callan does not
have a lawful cause of action. The suit alleges that the president violated
Ameri! can law by invading Iraq. Specifically at issue is compliance with
the War Powers Act...

UPDATE: Officials Back Away from Early Estimates of Iraqi Voter Turnout
Greg Mitchell
... For days, the press repeated, as gospel, assertions offered by an
election official that 8 million Iraqis went to the polls on Sunday, an
impressive 57% turnout rate. I questioned those figures as early as last
Sunday, and offered the detailed analysis below on Wednesday. Finally, on
Thursday night, John F. Burns and Dexter Filkins of The New York Times
reported that Iraqi election officials have quietly "backtracked, saying!
that the 8 million estimate had been reached hastily on the basis of
telephone reports from polling stations across the country and that the
figure could change"...

Santorum: Greasing the Skids for Mass Murdering Iranians
Kurt Nimmo
Rick Santorum is busy at work on the "Iran Freedom and Support Act," in
other words a bill designed to get America ready to bomb Iran. "By
supporting the people of Iran, and through greater outreach to
pro-democracy groups, we will hopefully foster a peaceful transition to
democracy in Iran," Santorum told Fox News. "The bill also notes the
futility of working with the Iranian government." You'd think, listening to
Santorum, there are dozens of I! ranian "pro-democracy groups" out there,
waiting for assistance, eager to overthrow the mullahs. In fact, there are
but two somewhat viable groups: the People's Mujahedin of Iran and the
monarchists...

In a dispatch posted at 7:50pm Mecca time Thursday night, the Mafkarat
al-Islam correspondent in al-Qa'im on the border with Syria reported that a
fierce battle between the Iraqi Resistance and US Marines raged from about
10am until 4pm local time Thursday. The last hour of battle was relatively
less intense and the fighting ended with the withdrawal! of US forces under
heavy cover from helicopters and fighter planes. The fighter planes
attacked houses of local inhabitants in several parts of the city of
al-Qa'im, killing 11 civilian residents, including three women and four
children.
