Who Used WMD in Iraq?
Dr. Elias Akleh*, Arabic Media Internet Network
... Iraq is littered with WMD. These are American WMD (nuclear, chemical
and biological) used by American troops against Iraqis. These weapons did
not affect only hundreds of thousands of Iraqis as well as American troops,
but had also condemned the future generations of Iraqis as well as the
offspring of the American troops. This is genocide. The administration
dares not bring this fact to the spot light...

Terrorists May Be Coming Soon to a Mall Near You
Kurt Nimmo
... In other words, the Strausscons — who are, after all, the "civilians in
the Pentagon," put there by Bush and Cheney — are softening up Iran,
blowing things up and killing people in preparation for another invasion,
or at least an extensive bombing campaign since most of Bush's
bullet-stoppers are busy in Iraq (...) "We obviously have a concern about
Iran. The whole world has a concern about Iran," Dan Bartlett, a top Bush
aide, told CNN after Hersh's! article appeared. Isn't it nice for Bartlett
to speak for the "whole world," a world mostly in opposition to Bush and
afraid for the future, especially those who live in and around the Middle
East? In reality, only Bush, the Strausscons, and the Israelis are
concerned about Iran...

What the NYT Death Chart Omitted
The Slaughter of Iraqi Civilians by US Military
DAVE LINDORFF
A horrifying chart and map on the opinion page of Sunday's New York Times
graphically displays the carnage caused by the ongoing U.S. war in Iraq.
Over a 14-day period during the first two weeks of the new year, Brookings
Institution senior research assistant Adriana Lins de Albuquerque shows
that 202 people died "as a result of the insurgency." But the chart is
deceptive, leaving out at least as much as it ! puts in. First of all, and
most importantly, as Lins de Albuquerque notes in her brief explanation,
the chart doesn't give any information about the number of Iraqi insurgents
killed by U.S. forces over the same period, nor does it give figures for
Iraqi civilians "accidentally killed by coalition forces" ...

"We Are Not Responsible for 9/11"A Message from the Iraqi Resistance
GARY LEUPP, CounterPunch
...The video describes the resistance movement as one conducted by "simple
people who chose principles over fear," resulting not only from the
invasion but from the UN "sanctions, which we consider the true weapons of
mass destruction." It explains the invasion in geopolitical terms, not
simplistically as a war between Islam and the West, or stupidly as a war
between Good vs. Evil...

Tet Offensive Reverberates 37 Years Later in Iraq
Will Dunham
Iraq's Jan. 30 elections fall on the 37th anniversary of the Tet offensive,
the Vietnam War turning point that could hold lessons for Iraqi insurgents
and U.S. policy makers anticipating more violence that could test American
resolve (...) In Vietnam, there was a centrally organized, large-scale
adversary supported by the Soviet Union and China. In Iraq, the insurgency
appears to lack central coordination, is far smaller, poses a scant
conventional mil! itary threat and lacks a superpower patron. But Iraq's
insurgency has managed to escalate its attacks and inflict American
casualties, Hammes said. "There's not a trend here that indicates we're
winning," he said...

Mass Resignations Before Iraq Vote
Associated Press
U.S. and Iraqi officials are scrambling to recruit new police and election
workers in Mosul after thousands of them resigned in the face of rebel
intimidation. A new police chief was appointed a week ago to command a
force of barely 1,000 police. Last November the city had 5,000 police.
Similar mass resignations are believed to have occurred in other Sunni
Muslim areas of northern, central and western Iraq...

THE COMING WARS
What the Pentagon can now do in secret.
SEYMOUR M. HERSH
...Bush's reëlection is regarded within the Administration as evidence of
America's support for his decision to go to war. It has reaffirmed the
position of the neoconservatives in the Pentagon's civilian leadership who
advocated the invasion, including Paul Wolfowitz, the Deputy Secretary of
Defense, and Douglas Feith, the Under-secretary for Policy. According to a
former high-level intelligence official, Secretary of Defense Donald Rum!
sfeld met with the Joint Chiefs of Staff shortly after the election and
told them, in essence, that the naysayers had been heard and the American
people did not accept their message. Rumsfeld added that America was
committed to staying in Iraq and that there would be no second-guessing.
"This is a war against terrorism, and Iraq is just one campaign. The Bush
Administration is looking at this as a huge war zone," the former
high-level intelligence official told me. "Next, we're going to have the
Iranian campaign"...

The Scapegoat
Abu Ghraib - a policy, not an aberration
Justin Raimondo, AntiWar
...As George W. Bush proclaims the glories of his "global democratic
revolution" and cites the upcoming elections in Iraq as evidence of
America's commitment to liberty, the War Party is desperate to hide the
real face of the American Imperium: the horror of Abu Ghraib. But the mask
is slipping, and the truth is bound to come out. And when it does, the
10-year sentence handed out to Graner ought to be doubled, tripled, or
maybe eve! n quadrupled when it comes to meting out justice to the real
perpetrators of the grave crimes committed at Abu Ghraib...

Destroying Babylon
Dahr Jamail, Iraq Dispatches
...The Guardian recently reported that "troops from the US-led force in
Iraq have caused widespread damage and severe contamination to the remains
of the ancient city of Babylon." (...) Tim Schadla Hall, reader in public
archaeology at the Institute of Archaeology at University College London,
said: "In this case we see an international conflict in which the US has
failed to take into account the requirements of the Hague convention ... to
protect major archaeologic! al sites - just another convention it seems
happy to ignore." So Babylon is being destroyed. Along with the Iraqi

Saddam to be moved to Qatar U.S. base

Ousted Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, who is being held in a prison at
Baghdad airport, will be transferred to a U.S. military base in Qatar.
Beirut's daily newspaper al-Mustaqbal, quoting Iraqi sources close to the
interim government and the U.S. Army command in Iraq, reported Monday that
a decision had been made to move Saddam to the U.S. al-Adid military base
near the Qatari capital, Doha, "probably during next week"...

Fallujah Eyewitness: U.S. Crimes and Iraqi Resistance
Revolutionary Worker
...Meanwhile, far from "breaking the back" of the resistance, the American
assault on Fallujah has been followed by the most widespread and intense
fighting since the occupation began. Mosul, Iraq's third- largest city, was
briefly taken over by guerrillas and is still hotly contested, even after
some of the U.S. troops from Fallujah were shifted there. The same is true
of some neighborhoods in Baghdad...

US to try 20 more troops for Iraq abuse
Suzanne Goldenberg, The Guardian
The Pentagon plans to put at least 20 more US troops before military courts
for abuse of detainees in the wake of last week's high profile trial of the
ringleader in the Abu Ghraib scandal, military spokesmen said yesterday.
The various prosecutions of soldiers accused of mistreating and, in some
cases, murdering detainees in Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantánamo Bay have
been in the works for months, but have been largely overshadowed by the tr!
ial of the man who became known as the "primary torturer" of the notorious
Baghdad prison...

Mom & Pop War Profiteering Team - Woolseys
Evelyn Pringle, Scoop
The Defense Policy Board (DPB) is a hand-picked group of 30 people that
advises Bush administration officials on matters such as whether and when
to go to war, or not. The current group was selected by Under Secretary of
Defense for Policy, Douglas Feith, and approved by Secretary of Defense
Donald Rumsfeld. Everyone who is anyone in the arms and defense industry
knows that palling up to DPB members is the ticket to getting a Pentagon
contract. Shor! tly after the war in Iraq began, the April 10, 2003 New
York Times pointed out that several board members stood to benefit
financially from the war...

I hope they have good binoculars!
Xymphora
...The fillip in the Iraqi election - and here is where it starts to become
surreal - is that most of the choices on the lists are afraid to reveal
their names for fear of being killed (...) How can it possibly be called an
election when you don't even know who it is you are voting for? Never fear,
because the crack Canadian team of election monitors is on the case, fresh
from certifying that the highly questionable Ukrainian election was
completely fair. Unfortunately, ! because Iraq is a scary place, they will
be monitoring its fairness from, uh, Jordan. I hope they have good
binoculars!...
