Tsunami: e i bambini dell'Iraq?

...E' bello vedere la gente del mondo impegnarsi a fare quello di cui sono
in grado per soccorrere le vittime dello Tsunami. Ma la mia domanda è
semplicemente questa, dov'è invece la preoccupazione del mondo per le
decine di migliaia di bambini Iracheni che sono stati decimati in maniera
così totale dall'invasione degli Stati Uniti e dalla seguente occupazione
dell'Iraq? Durante i 12 anni di sanzioni economiche che gli Stati Uniti
imposero all'Iraq prima dell'i nvasione, morirono più di 500.000 bambini --
come risultato diretto di quelli sanzioni. Dove erano allora la cura e la
preoccupazione del mondo? Dove erano finiti allora i cosiddetti
"conservatori compassionevoli" degli Stati Uniti? Oops! L'avevo dimenticato
per un istante, sono gli stessi che sostengono la guerra in Iraq...

looming as a political debacle for the Bush administration. (...)
Washington's ambition is to produce a puppet government with enough
domestic and international legitimacy to be able to sign off on the real
aims of the March 2003 invasion of Iraq. These include the establishment of
long-term military bases in the Iraq, from which the US can exert strategic
hegemony over the Middle East, and the sale to American corporate interests
of Iraq's state-owned oil industry—which controls the world's
second-largest oil reserves.

Report: More British troops for Iraq

Britain is expected to send up to 650 extra troops to Iraq to boost
security ahead of the 30 January elections. The Sunday Telegraph newspaper
said the troops would be based in British-controlled areas in southern Iraq
but could also be moved to more dangerous areas nearer Baghdad if Prime
Minister Tony Blair gives his approval. The fresh deployment would increase
the number of British troops in the country to over 9,000...

US army admits mistakenly bombing house in Iraq

The US military says a bomb dropped by one of its planes during a mission
in northern Iraq hit the wrong target and it "deeply regrets the loss of
possibly innocent lives". The bomb destroyed a villa in the village of
Aaytha near the city of Mosul on Saturday. Locals said 14 people were
killed, while the US military said its reports were that five Iraqis had
died.A US military statement said an F-16 fighter plane had dropped a
500-pound bomb on a house near M osul. "The house was not the intended
target for the air strike"...

Report paints bleak picture of Iraqi forces

The State Department's quarterly report to Congress paints a bleak picture
of Iraqi security forces in the run-up to this month's election, and Bush
administration officials and specialists now acknowledge it could take
years to prepare viable police and military units unless the current
training program improves dramatically. In some of the most violent areas
of the country, Iraqi forces have been ''rendered ineffective," the State
Department w rote in the report dated Jan. 5. Due to intimidation and
attacks by insurgents, ''large numbers" of police, highway patrol, and
border enforcement personnel ''have quit or abandoned their stations," it

US soldier cleared of killing Iraqi

A US military panel has found an army sergeant innocent of killing an Iraqi
civilian, but guilty of assault for having subordinates force him off a
bridge over the Tigris River (...) Perkins was accused of killing Zaidun
Hassun, 19, by having soldiers force him and a cousin off a ledge above the
Tigris river in Samarra, Iraq in January 2004. The cousin, Marwan Fadil,

Samarra election commission members resign

'US airstrike' in northern Iraq kills many

A US airstrike has destroyed a house in a northern Iraqi village killing at
least 14 people, locals said. The bombing was alleged to have taken place
over night. The US military said they have no information on the incident.
Reuters pictures showed a house in the village of Aaytha, southeast of the
northern city of Mosul, reduced to rubble.
