Have Allawi and Iraq's leaders lost the common touch?
Borzou Daragahi - Special to The Daily Star
With 100 days to go before elections are scheduled to be held to decide
Iraq's future, no posters adorn the capital's streets and no names are
being bandied about. There have been no debates scheduled, no candidate
forums, no voter education guides. Instead, Iraqi and American officials
are raising serious doubts as to whether legitimate elections are
possible...

Iraq, oltre 2.300 attacchi nell'ultimo mese
attentati contro obiettivi militari e civili.

U.S.: Iraq Violence Widening
CBS
U.S. officials concede they are not defeating or even containing an
insurgency that goes deeper than the daily attacks and kidnappings seen on
television, reports CBS News National Security Correspondent David Martin.
The governor of Al-Anbar province in western Iraq has warned the U.S. that
threats against local officials and their families have brought his
government to the verge of collapse. And it goes wider than the so-called
Sunni triangle around Baghdad. A recent report pre! pared for the State
Department by a private security firm says "a general trend is emerging of
attacks spreading into historically less active areas"...

Committing a war crime: Cancer cases in Iraq are increasing
Iraqwar
While Washington expresses concern that "terrorists" could explode a "dirty
bomb" containing nuclear waste on a Western city, killing hundreds of
people and leaving a radioactive residue which will cause cancer for years
to come, the US is dropping "dirty" depleted uranium bunker bombs on Iraq
and selling 500 of these devices to Israel...

War, Outsourcing and Debt. Delusion Rules
PAUL CRAIG ROBERTS, Counterpunch
... The perilous condition of the dollar is one of the reasons Bush invaded
Iraq. What keeps the overvalued dollar up is the fact that it is the
currency in which the Middle East bills its oil. Every country has to
purchase dollars in order to pay for its oil, and these purchases keep the
dollar afloat. Just prior to the US invasion, sanctions on Iraqi oil had
run their course and were about to be removed. Saddam Hussein intended to
bill I! raqi oil in Euros, which could have started the abandonment of the
dollar by the oil producing countries. Instead of fixing our economic
problems, we started a war...

The War's Littlest Victim. He was Exposed to Depleted Uranium. His Daughter
may be Paying the Price.
Juan Gonzalez
In early September 2003, Army National Guard Spec. Gerard Darren Matthew
was sent home from Iraq, stricken by a sudden illness. One side of
Matthew's face would swell up each morning. He had constant migraine
headaches, blurred vision, blackouts and a burning sensation whenever he
urinated. The Army transferred him to Walter Reed Army Medical Center in
Washington for further tests, but doctors there c! ould not explain what
was wrong. Shortly after his return, his wife, Janice, became pregnant. On

Iraq War Plans 'Were Drawn Up Before Vote'
Andrew Woodcock, Political Correspondent, PA News
Britain was involved in planning for war in Iraq for at least nine months
before MPs approved military action, according to a document apparently
leaked from the Pentagon. Details from the secret briefing paper, published
in London's Evening Standard, suggest that military commanders took part in
a war planning conference with US counterparts as early as June 2002...

Italy 'paid $1m to free hostages'
BBC News
A senior Italian politician says he believes a ransom of $1m or more was

Gustavo Selva described the denial as purely "official" (...) Gustavo Selva
is head of the Italian parliament's foreign affairs committee and a member
of the National Alliance, one of the parties in the governing coalition.
"The young women's life was ! the most important thing," he told French

this time I think we had to give in..."

Iraq Study Sees Rebels' Attacks as Widespread
JAMES GLANZ and THOM SHANKER, The New York Times
Over the past 30 days, more than 2,300 attacks by insurgents have been
directed against civilians and military targets in Iraq, in a pattern that
sprawls over nearly every major population center outside the Kurdish
north, according to comprehensive data compiled by a private security
company with access to military intelligence reports and its own network of
Iraqi informants. The sweeping geographical reach of the atta! cks, from
Nineveh and Salahuddin Provinces in the northwest to Babylon and Diyala in
the center and Basra in the south, suggests a more widespread resistance
than the isolated pockets described by Iraqi government officials. The type
of attacks ran the gamut: car bombs, time bombs, rocket-propelled grenades,
hand grenades, small-arms fire, mortar attacks and land mines...

"Le Nazioni Unite non esistono più"
Felipe Pérez Roque, ministro degli affari esteri della Repubblica di Cuba
Discorso pronunciato dal ministro degli affari esteri della Repubblica di
Cuba, durante l'assemblea generale delle Nazioni Unite tenutasi a New York,
l'aggressione all'Iraq, l'Organizzazione delle Nazioni Unite, intesa come
Secondo: Le
truppe nordamericane dovranno essere ritirate dall'Iraq...

Operation American Repression?
Eric Boehlert
An Army Reserve staff sergeant who last week wrote a critical analysis of
the United States' prospects in Iraq now faces possible disciplinary action
for disloyalty and insubordination. If charges are bought and the officer
is found guilty, he could face 20 years in prison. It would be the first
such disloyalty prosecution since the Vietnam War...

More Lies From the Five-Sided Propaganda Factory
David H. Hackworth
You'd think a Hollywood screenwriter scripted the "Saving Private Jessica
Lynch" spectacle the Pentagon produced last year. But that five-sided
propaganda factory with its battalions of well-trained deceivers came up
with this particular fairytale - about how a Special Ops unit snatched a
beautiful blonde American heroine from Iraqi fiends - all on their own
(...) In its micro way, the Lynch scam symbolizes the miasma of deception
surrounding the! invasion and the ugly unsolvable occupation already
causing the direst consequences to our national security...

Truths Worth Telling
DANIEL ELLSBERG
...Surely there are officials in the present administration who recognize
that the United States has been misled into a war in Iraq, but who have so
far kept their silence - as I long did about the war in Vietnam. To them I
have a personal message: don't repeat my mistakes. Don't wait until more
troops are sent, and thousands more have died, before telling truths that
could end a war and save lives. Do what I wish I had done in 1964: go to
the press, to Congress, and document ! your claims...

Iraq's CIA Election
Kurt Nimmo
Sean McCormack says the Bushites want "a level playing field" for the
upcoming Iraqi elections. In other words, they want to determine the
election's outcome. How best to do this? Send in the CIA. Once upon a time,
before Bush was selected and "everything changed," the CIA went about its
dirty business under the cover of national secrecy...
