Friday, 24 September 2004
Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member editorial board The
Free Arab Voice
...The headquarters of the US occupation in the Republican Palace in
Baghdad - called the "green zone" by the American invaders - was bombarded
several times on Friday morning. At 5:20am local time what are believed to
have been Katyusha rockets crashed into the facility. Then two more
apparent Katyushas struck the US-occupied f! acility at 8:00am. Then at
10:00am local time the Resistance pounded the "green zone" with powerful
Grad missiles. Resistance forces bombarded the US base at as-Suqur south of
Baghdad with five to seven heavy mortar shells, believed to be 120mm rounds
at 8:00am Friday morning...

Troop documents conflict with Bush claims
Reuters
Fewer Iraqi security forces will be fully trained by the end of this year
than cited by President George W. Bush and it will take until July 2006 to
fully train the police force, according to Pentagon documents. With interim
Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi at his side, Bush said on Thursday that
nearly 100,000 fully trained and equipped Iraqi soldiers, police officers
and other security personnel are already working and this number would rise
to 125,000 by the en! d of this year...

Iraqi scientists' detention questioned
Aljazeera.net
Former chief arms inspectors David Kay and Hans Blix are questioning the
continued detention of a dozen Iraqi weapons scientists by US forces. This
comes more than a year after the prisoners first told interrogators Iraq
had no outlawed weapons - a story that turned out to be true. "What are the
accusations?" ex-UN inspector Blix asked in an interview on Friday,
referring to one leading Iraqi prisoner, Amir al-Saadi...

More Iraqi civilians killed by U.S. forces than by insurgents, data shows
NANCY A. YOUSSEF, Knight Ridder Newspapers
Operations by U.S. and multinational forces and Iraqi police are killing
twice as many Iraqis - most of them civilians - as attacks by insurgents,
according to statistics compiled by the Iraqi Health Ministry and obtained
exclusively by Knight Ridder. According to the ministry, the interim Iraqi
government recorded 3,487 Iraqi deaths in 15 of the country's 18 provinces
from April 5 - when the minis! try began compiling the data - until Sept.
19. Of those, 328 were women and children. Another 13,720 Iraqis were
injured, the ministry said...

Money for Iraq Reconstruction Diverted to Sudan
Les Blough, Editor, Axis of Logic
The transfer of $150 million from money designated for "reconstruction" in
Iraq to Sudan was approved by the Senate on September 15, 2004. Patrick
Leahy's (Sen., Vermont) website issued the report below but there is very
little to be found about this shell game in the corporate media. One of our
news reporters discovered it today on Sudan.Net...

More Iraq-Fraud From Halliburton?
CBS
Halliburton's public face is feeding the troops and trucking supplies
through dangerous desert. But waste and theft are silent players in
Halliburton's Iraq operations, according to two men who drove supply trucks
for Halliburton subsidiary KBR, reports CBS News Correspondent Sharyl
Attkisson. Halliburton said Friday it may sell or spin off its troubled KBR
subsidiary. KBR has a multi-billion dollar contract to supply U.S. troops
in Iraq, but is accused of hundreds of million! s of dollars in improper
charges...

Authority Mishandled Iraq's Economy
Robert L. Moore
Recently released information on Iraq reveals that the situation there is
worse than most Americans have been led to believe. At the same time, there
is a growing chorus of international critics that is suggesting that a
large part of the explanation for this grim situation is the Coalition
Provisional Authority's handling of Iraq's economy...

US Congress hails Washington's Iraqi stooge
Bill Van Auken, WSWS
The degradation of the US political process found grotesque expression
Thursday in the joint session of Congress convened to pay homage to Ayad
Allawi. Congressmen and senators as well as members of the Bush cabinet and
the Joint Chiefs of Staff repeatedly leapt to their feet in standing
ovations as the "interim prime minister" of Iraq proclaimed his commitment
to "freedom and democracy," and praised the US occupation as the country's
liberation and! a decisive blow in the "worldwide war against terrorists"...

Three More U.S. Sailors Charged in Iraqi Prisoner Abuse
Charles Aldinger, Reuters
Three more members of an elite Navy SEAL unit have been charged with
abusing Iraqi prisoners, one of whom died in custody after he was beaten,
the Naval Special Warfare Command said on Friday. The command, based in San
Diego, California, also reported earlier this month that four other members
of the Sea-Air-Land (SEAL) commando unit would face military criminal
charges. The case has marked the first criminal charges against Navy per!
sonnel in a prisoner abuse scandal that erupted when pictures of U.S.
forces physically abusing and sexually humiliating Iraqi prisoners at Abu
Ghraib prison surfaced in April...

Blair accused of 'secret pact with Bush' over Iraq
ROBBIE DINWOODIE
...Mr Salmond will attack the prime minister over his decision to take the
UK to war in the Gulf, making accusations against him over his
justification for sending British troops to Iraq. He will also accuse Mr
Blair of "entering into a secret pact with George Bush to justify the
aggression" - an explosive accusation. Mr Salmond will tell delegates at
his party conference in Inverness that Tony Blair knew full well that all

"Saddam Hussein, the Fighter, the Thinker and the Man". Part II: Religion
and heritage - Revolutionary reflections
Amir Eskander, Al-Moharer
..."What we must do is to oppose the institutionalization of religion in
the state and in society-and also to oppose letting the Revolution intrude
into religion. Let us return to the roots of our religion, glory in
them-but not bring it into politics." The conclusion to be drawn is that we
should hold fast to the ideal of a popular, secular state, raised above
sectarian dif! ferences. All citizens of whatever creed are equal in the
eyes of the state. One citizen can only have merit superior to another
because of his attachment to the country and the Revolution, and his effort
in the building of a new society....

Fool me twice . . . shame on me!
Jack Dalton, Online Journal Contributing Writer
Listening to Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, and their cadre of "cheerleaders"
attempt to convince us—the U.S. public, the voting public—that "progress"
is being made in Iraq, I can only wonder what episode of "Fantasy Island"
they are talking about. They sure are not describing the reality on the
ground in Iraq. At least not according to what I have been reading. And not
according to the letters I've received from veterans of this war in Ir! aq!
They tell a story of chaos, instability, death and destruction, and a lack
of everything from equipment to food and water...

Toxic Pollution and Killing in Iraq
Ghali Hassan
The American use of "depleted" uranium (DU) munitions to attack Iraq in the
1991 and 2003 wars has unleashed a toxic disaster that is much more
dangerous and deadly than the crimes committed on Vietnam by the use of
Agent Orange (...) According to the WHO figures prior to the 1990 US war,
the Iraqi people had 92% access to high quality free health care in some of
the finest hospitals in the Middle East, 93% access to clean water, high
nutritional status and a free ! education system described as unique by
UNESCO, since of standard such that a child born into abject poverty could
leave graduate school as a doctor, engineer or architect...

Allawi, Bush & Cheney Are All Lying About Conditions in Iraq
Sam Hamod
...Allawi is a big liar, not to be trusted about anything he says. He's a
cheap Arab con-man who may be useful to the neo-cons in D.C., but not good
for the Iraqis. He was in exile for good reason, no one in Iraq wanted him
there, neither Saddam or the religious leaders nor the people of Iraq. The
only group that wanted him was the CIA; used them and they used him, now we
have a mess on our hands with Allawi making it worse. I personally don't!
think he'll last that long, especially if he wanders outside of the
American protected "green zone"...

Liar, Liar...
Baghdad Burning, Girl Blog from Iraq...
...I can't seem to decide what is worse- when Bush speaks in the name of
Iraqi people, or when Allawi does. Yesterday's speech was particularly
embarrassing. He stood there groveling in front of the congress- thanking
them for the war, the occupation and the thousands of Iraqi lives lost...
and he did it all on behalf of the Iraqi people. It was infuriating and for
maybe the hundredth time this year, I felt rage. Yet another exile thanking
the Bush administrat! ion for the catastrophe we're trying to cope with
(...) Allawi actually said "thank you" nine times. Nine times. It really
should have been more- at least double that number of Iraqis died
yesterday... and about five times that number the day before...

«Potevano fermare i sequestratori»

Crude dudes. `U.S. oil companies just happened to have billions of dollars
they wanted to invest in undeveloped oil reserves
LINDA MCQUAIG
...Not only does Iraq have vast quantities of easily accessible oil, but
its oil is almost untouched. "Think of Iraq as virgin territory .... This
is bigger than anything Exxon is involved in currently .... It is the
superstar of the future," says Gheit, "That's why Iraq becomes the most
sought-after real estate on the face of the earth." Gheit just smiles at
the notion that o! il wasn't a factor in the U.S. invasion of Iraq. He
compares Iraq to Russia, which also has large undeveloped oil reserves. But
Russia has nuclear weapons. "We can't just go over and ... occupy (Russian)
oil fields," says Gheit. "It's a different ballgame." Iraq, however, was
defenceless, utterly lacking, ironically, in weapons of mass destruction...
