Un messaggio: «Abbiamo giustiziato le prigioniere italiane». Un ponte per:
«Grandi dubbi»
L'Unità
Palazzo Chigi invita alla cautela ma la tensione è altissima. Poco dopo la
mezzanotte (ora italiana), un gruppo islamico ha annunciato su Internet
l'assassinio di Simona Pari e Simona Torretta. Il messaggio era firmato
dall' Organizzazione Jihad, sigla leggermente diversa da quella utilizzata
in un precedente messaggio, del 12 settembre, firmato Organizzazione Jihad
Islamica.

The enemy is us
Sam Gardiner
...The Army Field Manual describes information operations as the use of
strategies such as information denial, deception and psychological warfare
to influence decision making. The notion is as old as war itself. With
information operations, one seeks to gain and maintain information
superiority -- control information and you control the battlefield. And in
the information age, it has become even more imperative to influence
adversaries. But with the Iraq war, information operations h! ave gone
seriously off track, moving beyond influencing adversaries on the
battlefield to influencing the decision making of friendly nations and,
even more important, American public opinion...

Look! The UN-Muppet Has Spoken
Yamin Zakaria, Media Monitors Network
...If the US-led invasion was illegal and violated the UN charter then
surely it means the Mr Kofi Annan should call for the following: demand war
reparations to be paid to Iraq; declare the invasion as a war crime; call
for the immediate release of Saddam Hussein and all the other prisoners
held in captivity; lay down a time table for the removal of all foreign
troops illegally occupying a sovereign nation. Finally, the measures needed
for puni! shing the US and its coalition partners for violating the UN
charter...

Deadly fighting in Samarra
Capital News 9 web staff
At least one child has been killed and five people wounded in fighting that
erupted after sunset Wednesday in the central Iraqi City of Samarra. A
police spokesman also said four houses were damaged. The fighting came
after an attacker detonated a car bomb Sunday near a joint U.S.-Iraqi
checkpoint, killing three people and wounding seven, including four
American soldiers...

Whose Actrocites are worse?
Doris Cadigan
...Since March 17, 2002, the US has bombed Iraq to a ruins, brutalized and
imprisoned Iraqi men. Today, over 30,000 Iraqis are dead--and countless
others remain injured. Instead of liberating Iraq--the US occupies it. For
months -- Iraqis have blown up and killed over 1,000 American soldiers,
beheaded and executed foreigners. How absurd to think smart bombs and
cluster bombs are somehow more civilized than killing people with car bombs
and body bombs. If the US did no! t invade Iraq -- would Iraqis be
attacking Americans? So whose atrocities are worse?

A Young Iraqi Man's Testimony
Peggy Gish, Christian Peacemaker Teams
Mabel Brunk, David Milne and I sat in the modest rural Iraqi home with
members of the extended family. On a nearby road, an explosion killed a U.
S. soldier in January 2004. An uncle brought Kareem (not his real name), a
24-year-old man into the room to tell us his story. He had been sleeping on
a mat on the floor in this home to protect the family while his uncle was
in prison. He heard U. S. soldiers break into the home at 4:00 in the
morning.! Before he had a chance to get up, a soldier smashed him in the
face with the barrel of his gun and broke his nose. Soldiers cuffed him and
put him on the floor of a military vehicle...

If America were Iraq, What would it be Like?
Juan Cole

President Bush said Tuesday that the Iraqis are refuting the pessimists and
implied that things are improving in that country. What would America look
like if it were in Iraq's current situation? The population of the US is
over 11 times that of Iraq, so a lot of statistics would have to be
multiplied by that number. Thus, violence killed 300 Iraqis last week, the
equivalent proportionately of 3,300 Americans. What if 3,300 Americans had
died in car bombings, grenade and rocket attacks, machine gun spray, and
aerial bombardment in the last week? That is a number greater than the
deaths on September 11, and if America were Iraq, it would be an ongoing,
weekly or monthly toll...

Signs of life at the UN?
Hasan Abu Nimah & Ali Abunimah, Electronic Iraq
...It is puzzling that Annan has chosen to speak up only now, after 30,000
Iraqis have been killed, unknown numbers maimed, and savage violence is
escalating and instability threatening the whole region (...) Rather than
enhancing the credibility of the body, Annan's acquiescence eroded it,
giving the impression that when a powerful state commits the gravest
possible breach of the Charter — an unprovoked armed attack on a member
state, the o! ccupation of its territory, the removal of its government and
the installation of a puppet leader employed by its own intelligence
services — the Secretary General backs off from any but the mildest
comments and goes along with the status quo. The UN, by appearing as the
handmaiden of the occupation, seems to have lost all credibility with
Iraqis...

Widespread Torture of Iraqi Prisoners Feared as Reports Emerge of Prisoner
Abuse By U.S. In Mosul
Democracy Now!
Allegations have emerged from the northern Iraqi city of Mosul that
American troops are routinely torturing Iraqi detainees there. We speak
with the British lawyer who says he received statements from two Iraqis
describing the abuse by U.S. soldiers. Months after the Abu Ghraib prisoner
abuse scandal shocked the world, allegations have emerged from the northern
Iraqi city of Mosul that American troops ! are routinely torturing Iraqi
detainees there...

It's Almost Scapegoat Time
Steven LaTulippe
This past week appears to mark the beginning of yet another Sunni offensive
in Iraq. According to numerous military experts, the rebels have settled
into a 4-month cycle, including 4 to 6 weeks of intense military attacks
followed by 2-3 months of relative inaction while they rearm and retrain
new cadres. The previous Sunni offensive was launched last spring during
Ramadan and saw the country very nearly spiral out of control...

Reporter says Iraqi civil war possible
Beth Alimena
...Gettleman, who was originally embedded with the Fourth Infantry Division
when fighting was at a lull, described daily life in Iraq and the
situations he witnessed there, saying that he felt the war in Iraq is not a
war on terrorism (...) "There is a difference between the insurgency and
terrorists, and some people do not get that. The Iraqis are doing what they
feel is right. The Iraqis see this as defending their country, their women,
their homes," he added.! ..

Depleted Uranium, weapons of war - the Pandora's box
Michael Berglin, Pravda
The US is the largest single user of depleted uranium (DU) in weaponry. It
is also the largest seller and exporter of depleted uranium weapon
technology. DU is used in smart bombs, bunker busters, anti-tank weapons,
and the tow missiles (...) "Since 1990, the incident rate of leukemia in
Iraq has grown by more than 600 percent". "We have proof of traces of DU in
samples taken for analysis and that is really bad for those who assert tha!
t cancer cases have grown for other reasons"...

We Are Losing the War In Iraq
Joseph Cirincione
Every major military indicator shows the war in Iraq is going badly. The
United States is losing ground, losing hearts and minds, and losing the
war. Three U.S. soldiers have been killed in Iraq on average every day in
September, up from August, which was up from July. Major cities are now
considered too unsafe for U.S. forces to enter, including Fallujah,
Samarra, Ramadi and other cities in Iraq's Sunni regions...

MPs can end the Iraq folly
Tony Benn, The Guardian
At the moment when the prime minister has announced his decision to
intensify the war in Iraq and when more British troops may well be sent
there, the time has come for new policies to be adopted since we know, in
great detail, all the key facts from very authoritative sources. We know
from Paul O'Neill, George Bush's first treasury secretary, that the new
president took the decision to invade Iraq when he entered the White House
- almost a year before the attack! on the twin towers - and that no one in
Washington or London really ever believed that Saddam Hussein was
responsible for the atrocity...

Torture for Profit
David Phinney
Employees of two high-profile defense contractors are accused of
involvement in close to one third of the torture and abuse incidents cited
in a recent Army investigation of Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. In late
August, following release of the report, Defense department officials
turned over the names of six CACI International Inc. and Titan Corporation
employees to the U.S. Justice department for possible prosecution...

Why Americans Back the War
James Carroll
THE WAR IN IRAQ goes from worse to catastrophic. Hundreds of Iraqis were
killed last week, as were two dozen US soldiers. Planned elections in
January point less to democracy than civil war. Kidnapping has become a
weapon of terror on the ground, matching the terror of US air attacks. An
American "take-back" offensive threatens to escalate the violence
immeasurably. The secretary general of the United Nations pronounced the
American war illegal...

Speaking of Phony Documents...Attention Deficit America
PAUL CRAIG ROBERTS
Excuse me, but the story is not CBS and the George W. Bush National Guard
documents. The story is: How did the US Congress, the opposition party, the
news media, and the US public let the Bush administration start a war based
on phony documents? If someone deceived CBS and passed off forged documents
as real, at least CBS consulted experts about the documents before going on
the air...
