Iraq: Urgent inquiry needed into civilian killings by US troops
Amnesty International
Amnesty International is calling for an inquiry into recent attacks in
which civilians were killed in Iraq in circumstances which may have
violated international law. "There are worrying reports about the mounting
casualties amongst civilians who find themselves caught in the battle
between American troops and insurgents," said Abdel Salam Sidahmed,
Director of the Middle East and North Africa Program in Amnesty
International...

Iraqi Children work instead of going to school
IRIN
Iraqi children are suffering both economically and psychologically after
the war to topple Saddam Hussein, with many forced to work instead of
attending school, a recent Ministry of Education (MoE) survey says. Hassan
al-Joubouri, 12, and his brother, Hussein, 10, have smudges of dirt on
their faces and arms from their work digging through rubbish in Haifa
Street in central Baghdad to find aluminium cans and other metal scraps
which they sell for around 600 dinars, or 50 cents, per kil! o.

Aljazeera.net
Three people have been killed and five injured in renewed US air strikes on
the Iraqi town of Falluja amid widespread condemnation against the attacks.
The latest air strike by the US forces was launched on the Shuhada and
industrial sectors of the city late on Friday, Aljazeera learned. Earlier,
Ahmad Hardan, member of the Local Council in Falluja, told Aljazeera that
of the three killed, two were an elderly couple. Five people were also
injured in the air strike which targeted ! the Dhubat (officers)
neighbourhood in the city, Hardan said...

Senators sound alarm over Iraq
David Stout, The New York Times
Republicans on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee said Wednesday that
the Bush administration's request to divert more than $3 billion from
reconstruction work in Iraq to security measures was a sign that the
American campaign in Iraq is in serious trouble. The criticism came as the
existence of a highly classified -- and pessimistic -- National
Intelligence Estimate about the future security and stability of Iraq was
revealed...

CIA and Bush need to answer questions about 'ghost detainees' at Abu Ghraib
The Daily Telegram
Last week, we learned that the CIA apparently has the ability to hide
prisoners from the outside world — for reasons one can only speculate about
— and then simply refuse to say anything about these people for government
investigations. The startling disclosure that at least two dozen detainees
at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq were concealed from the Red Cross came from
Army generals appearing before a Senate panel. “Ghost detainees” is the
term u! sed for such prisoners who are held by the CIA outside of the
military’s normal system of registration and care...

Kerry accuses Cheney of war profit
Agence France-Presse
JOHN KERRY's Democratic election campaign accused Vice-President Dick
Cheney of making money from the Iraq war through his links to the
Halliburton company, in a new television advert. The spot, which will be
shown in states where Kerry is in the tightest race with President George W
Bush, shows Cheney saying in 2003: "I have no financial interest in
Halliburton of any kind and haven't had now for over three years"...

The Swamps, Jungles and Sins of Omission
Les Blough, Editor, Axis of Logic
...In an interview with Dr. Toby Dodge, University of Warwick, Mr. Aziz
made the famous statement: “People say to me, you (the Iraqis) are not the
Vietnamese. You have no jungles and swamps to hide in. I reply, let our
cities be our swamps and our buildings our jungles.” (...) Indeed, the
valiant Iraqi resistance has been mounting a growing and successful
guerrilla force against the real insurgents - the U.S. and British military
along with their mercenary! soldiers and contractors. Indeed, the cities
have become the swamps for the U.S./British soldiers and the buildings,
their jungles. Does the corporate press remind us of the words of Tariq
Aziz, a Christian, who has presumably been in prison and probably tortured
(my assumption) - since he surrendered to U.S. forces in April, 2003? ...

Do not believe a word of everything they say. Always Remember the Weapon of
Mass Destruction
Albasrah.net

program. Saddam Hussein has held numerous meetings with Iraqi nuclear
scientists, a group he calls his 'nuclear mujahideen' -- his nuclear holy
warriors. Satellite photographs reveal that Iraq is rebuilding facilities
at sites that have been part of its nuclear program in the past."-- Bush,
Oct. 7 ,2002...

3,000 Iraqi dead named
Simon Jeffery, The Guardian
The most complete attempt yet to identify some of the estimated 15,000
Iraqi civilians killed since the US-led invasion in March last year was
unveiled in Chicago today. Iraq Body Count (IBC), a volunteer group of
British and US academics and researchers, came up with 3,000 names by
combining its database of dead civilians gleaned from media reports with
the work of on-the-ground Iraqi researchers. "Every one of some 15,000
Iraqi civilians killed was a loved human being, whose loss crea! tes
heartbreak and bitterness among the bereaved families and communities,"
said local IBC member Scott Lipscomb (...) Neither the US nor the UK, the
former occupying powers, attempted to count or identify the civilian dead
and the IBC list represents the most comprehensive project of its kind.
John Sloboda, a co-founder of IBC and professor of psychology at Keele
University, said the group estimated that a further 12,000 civilians on top
of the 3,000 identified had died in Iraq since March 2003...

US Occupation Shuffling Money Before Flushing It
Brian Dominick, The NewStandard
Even as people throughout Iraq continue to suffer from severe shortages of
water, electricity and other crucial services, including the health care
resources needed to treat the resulting illnesses, the Bush administration
on Wednesday officially proposed to shift money away from the
reconstruction effort toward internal security, the oil industry, "economic
development" in Iraq's private sector, and paying back Iraq's debt to the

servizi segreti...)
Naomi Klein e Jeremy Scahil, ReporterAssociati
E mentre i mujahidin iracheni nascondono
volto scoperto e sbarbati, alcuni vestiti in uniforme...

US air raid toll mounts

A fresh US aerial onslaught near Falluja in Anbar province has killed at
least 56 people and wounded 40, according to hospital sources. Several
strikes on the village of Zoba, some 7km south of the town of Falluja,
demolished 13 houses, the sources and witnesses said early on Friday
morning. "The bodies of 30 people killed in Zoba were brought to Falluja
general hospital as well as 40 wounded," Dr Ahmad Khalil said earlier in
the day, adding that many of the victims were women and children. Khalil !
also said two Iraqi women were killed and eight other people wounded in

GIs claim threat by Army. Soldiers say they were told to re-enlist or face

expected to deploy to Iraq. Hundreds of soldiers from the 3rd Brigade
Combat Team were presented with that message and a re-enlistment form in a

US death toll continues to rise in Iraq

1030. Three US marines were killed in separate incidents on Thursday in the
western al-Anbar province, home to the city of Falluja, the US military

the First Marine Expeditionary Force was killed in action and two died of

L'anatema tardivo di Kofi Annan
VITTORIO ZUCCONI
come i generali cominciano a denunciare. Avrebbe conseguenze, appunto,
legali, molto serie.
incriminazione davanti a tribunali internazionali...

Letter from Europe: As Iraq deteriorates, alliance loses its focus
Patrick E. Tyler NYT
... But as the loss of control seemed to intensify, Western leaders were
ever more self-absorbed: isolated from the conflict and, to a growing
extent, isolated from one another. The trans-Atlantic alliance of Britain
and the United States that prosecuted the war has entered a kind of recess
period...
