"Caro Fausto Bertinotti…" LETTERA APERTA AL SEGRETARIO DEL PARTITO DELLA
RIFONDAZIONE COMUNISTA
Fulvio Griamldi
propaganda imperialista, a te tanto consueti. Gli iracheni preferiv! a
ascoltarli. Non è da tutti. Chissà come rimarrebbe, ora, a vedersi

Appeal For Truth Telling
Ray McGovern
Enough with the ex post facto apologies. We need government officials and
uniformed officers to come forward before the next ill-conceived invasion
or the next prisoner abuse scandal. A group of former government officials
are joining forces to call on their colleagues to speak out—and perhaps
help to prevent the next tragedy...

The Holes in a 'Shia Strategy'
Fareed Zakaria, Newsweek
...Hence the temptations of a "Shia strategy." Such an approach would see
the Sunni areas in Iraq as hopeless, until an Iraqi Army could go in and
establish control. It would ensure that the Shia community, as well as the
Kurds, remained supportive of Allawi's government and of the upcoming
elections. It would attempt to hold elections everywhere—but if they could
not be held in the Sunni areas, elections would go forward anyway. That
would isolate the Sunni problem and leave it to! be dealt with when force
is available...

The legacy of Bush
Timothy Bancroft-Hinchey, Pravda
47 dead, 100 injured, another sunny day in Baghdad, the city which has
never known so much violence in its 1,250-year history. That is, since
George W. Bush decided to heed his messages from God, destabilize the
region and destroy the country called Iraq. George W. Bush is responsible
for destroying the State of a country which supported a substantial
proportion of its population with state-sponsored aid programmes, due to
the aggressive sanctions programme imposed by the USA/UNO, prog! rammes
which indirectly led to the death of half a million Iraqi children.

Resistance stronger in Iraq, analysts say
JONATHAN S. LANDAY AND WARREN P. STROBEL, Knight Ridder Newspapers
...The insurgency, meanwhile, has gained strength. White said his
conservative estimate is that there are 100,000 Iraqis involved in the
Sunni insurgency, including fighters, messengers and people who provide
housing and other assistance. He discounted estimates by U.S. military
commanders that the Sunni resistance numbers about 5,000 fighters. In tacit
recognition of the ugly realities, the Bush administration on Tuesday
announc! ed that it's asking Congress to shift almost $3.5 billion from
Iraqi reconstruction projects to improve security...

ANALYSIS-Iraqi elections could fuel war if Sunnis excluded
Tom Perry, Reuters
In a room packed with mortar shells, a 29-year-old Iraqi casually juggles a
rocket-propelled grenade and explains why he won't vote in elections next
year. "The resistance does not recognise the coming elections, which will
consolidate the occupation," he said in Falluja, a city where Iraq's
government and U.S. forces exert no control...

Crazy Like a Fox. Neocons go bananas over AIPAC spy scandal, but there's a
method to their madness
Justin Raimondo, AntiWar
...The neocons are certainly crazed in the megalomaniacal sense to suggest
that the American response to 9/11 must be to somehow "democratize" at
gunpoint a region that has never gotten out the Middle Ages and launch a
worldwide struggle against a religion of a billion-plus adherents. But
crazy also implies out-of-control, and that is most certainly not what is
occurring here: in the case of the neocons, we're talk! ing crazy like a
fox…. Sure it was crazy to go into Iraq, with no credible plan, against the
advice of senior military commanders, in a way that virtually ensured the
disaster we are now seeing unfold in all its bloody, criminal futility.
Powell and his realist confreres in the national security bureaucracy saw
this early on. But what they didn't see - or didn't let us in on at the
time - is that there's a method to this madness...

Up to 10 people have been killed in clashes between Iraqi fighters and US
marines in Ramadi, while a car blast south of Baghdad has left two dead.
Aljazeera has learnt that armed men attacked a US convoy in the centre of
the city of Ramadia, west of Baghdad, on Wednesday. US forces responded

I turcomanni, nuova spina Turchia-Usa

A daily toll of US atrocities in Iraq
By the Editorial Board, WSWS
The cold-blooded slaughter of civilians in Haifa Street in central Baghdad
on Sunday underscores the completely criminal character of the US
occupation of Iraq. Day after day, scores of Iraqi civilians are being
massacred in concerted offensive aimed at terrorising the population and
stamping American control over the country in the leadup to next year's
elections...

Motive for Haifa Street Helicopter Massacre Remains a Mystery
Brian Dominick, The NewStandard
...This version differs drastically from all Iraqi accounts given to The
NewStandard and other reporters and bears no resemblance to television
footage taken at the scene. On the Al-Arabiya video, there is no sign of
fire coming from the ground, and no fire from above precedes the explosions
that killed and wounded noncombatants far from the disemboweled Bradley...

War Or Terror: What's Worse?
SAMIRAN CHAKRAWERTTI
When the US death toll in Iraq crossed 1,000 last week, the number seemed
like a shocker. However, that figure pales in comparison with the 30,000
Afghans and Iraqis estimated to have died in the War on Terror (...) The
total figure of 30,000 is more than the number of people killed in
terrorist acts in the last 35 years - studies show 22,000 people have been
killed in terrorist incidents since 1968...

If Sabotage & Assassination are Okay...What's Wrong with Torture?
JENNIFER VAN BERGEN, CounterPunch
Is torture wrong? What does the Bush administration think? One way to
analyze this is to trace ideas wrought by post-9/11 conservative analysts
whose views mirror and expand upon those in the administration. An
interesting and valuable collection of such analyses is found in a special
Spring 2002 issue of "Orbis: A Journal of World Affairs," titled "The New
Protracted Conflict."[1] Sam C. Sarkesian, Professor Emeritus of political
scienc! e at Loyola University, Chicago, author of numerous publications on
national security and a retired lieutenant colonel of the U.S. Army, wrote
an article in this special issue in which he endorsed the use of a
"culture" of special forces.[2] These forces, he noted, are indoctrinated
in carrying out "unconventional warfare," which he defines as "following
Sun Tzu's notions" of "sabotage, terror, and assassination." The special
forces, according to Sarkesian, utilize "the notion that the center of
gravity is the political-social milieu of the adversary." To combine these
two statements and what you get is: special forces carry out acts that - in
language that the PATRIOT Act uses to define terrorism - "appear to be
intended to intimidate or coerce a civilian population, to influence the
policy of a government by intimidation or coercion, or to affect the
conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination, or
kidnapping."[3] Terrorism by any other name is still terroris! m...

New IFJ Demand for Inquiry As Deadly Missile Strike Highlights US Role in
Iraq Media Killings
International Federation of Journalists
...Since the invasion of Iraq last year, the IFJ says that 13 journalists
and media staff have been killed in incidents that have not been
satisfactorily explained. "We need a detailed, independent inquiry and
answers to hard questions into this and every other case where our
colleagues have been killed," said White. "So far there has been a series
of white-wash reports in which soldiers have cleared them! selves of any
responsibility. It is wholly unacceptable"...

US troops face new torture claims
Richard Norton-Taylor, The Guardian
Allegations that American soldiers routinely tortured and maltreated
detainees have emerged from a third Iraqi city, renewing fears that abuse
similar to that inflicted in Abu Ghraib jail in Baghdad has been systematic
and widespread.
American soldiers in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul beat and stripped
detainees, threatened sexual abuse and forced them to listen to loud
western music, according to statements seen by the Guardian. Lawyers
investigating the claims have sent details to the Pentagon and the British
Ministry of Defence and have demanded an inquiry. Though the abuse of
prisoners at the Abu Ghraib jail and in Basra has been well-documented,
this is the first time claims of abuse have been made from the north of the
country. Two statements have been taken from Iraqis detained in Mosul and
more are expected...

Iraq: Signs of desperation
Paul Reynolds, BBC News Online world affairs correspondent
...Two recent reports from US think tanks have examined the problems and
have made recommendations. They do not make happy reading. The more
substantial one is from the Center for Strategic and International Studies
(CSIS). It concluded: "Two months after the United States transferred
sovereignty to an Iraqi interim government... Iraq remains embroiled in an
insurgency, with security problems overshadowing other efforts to rebuild
Iraq's fragile societ! y in the areas of governance and participation,
economic opportunity, services and well-being." In none of these areas, it
concludes, is Iraq moving towards what it calls "tipping points" towards
"self-sustainability and further progress"...
