Il Ritiro delle Truppe Straniere dall'Iraq ? l'Unica Soluzione Possibile
Tariq Ali (trad. M. Sesler) , Peacelink
truppe straniere dall'Iraq...

New attempt by police to intimidate journalists
Reporters Without Borders
Reporters Without Borders today condemned the brief detention yesterday in
Najaf of some 60 journalists who were taken to police headquarters in the
city! and accused by the police chief of failing to tell the truth. "This
behaviour by the police constitutes a serious violation of press freedom
and is utterly incompatible with the democratic principles advocated by
your government for the construction of a new Iraq," the organisation said
in a letter to interior minister Falah Al-Naqib...

2004 Iraq deaths now exceed 2003 deaths
Tom Schaller
It happened this week almost without notice: The number of Americans killed
in Iraq during 2004 now exceeds the number killed in 2003.
More remarkably, the 488 killed thus far this year died in just 239 days
(2.04 daily average), while the 482 killed last year died during fully 287
days (1.68 daily average), which means that not only has 2004 been bloodier
than 2003 in absolute terms, but in relative terms as well...

Analysts See Najaf Deal 'Way-out', Not 'Peace'
IslamOnline.net
The hastily reached peace deal to defuse the crisis in Najaf is in fact a
"doomed truce" as it left some very serious loose ends pertaining to the
crisis and the si! tuation in Iraq in general, analysts and observers
anticipated Friday, August 27. Shiite leader Muqtada Al-Sadr ordered his
militiamen to lay down arms and leave Imam Ali Shrine in Najaf, as part of
the deal with Iraq's most revered religious leader, Grand Ayatollah Ali
Al-Sistani...

The Ghosts of Abu Ghraib
ROBIN COOK
Those close to him mutter, under their breath of course, that Tony Blair's
only moment of doubt over Iraq came in the wake of the exposure of the Abu
Ghraib scandal. This is plausible, as our! Prime Minister possesses a
Gladstonian moral imperative. He believes that any economy with the truth
over the threat from Saddam's vanishing weapons of mass disappearance would
be forgiven in the short run by his electorate and in the long run by his
Maker so long as he could convince both that it was done from the best of
moral motives. Those shameful pictures of Iraqis hooded, naked, with
electrodes strapped to their genitals, were devastating precisely because
they demolished any pretension that the occupation could be justified by
the moral superiority of the occupiers...

Iraqi Holy City Left Broken by Urban Warfare
Karl Vick, Washington Post Foreign Service
...But after 21 days of merciless battering by U.S. weapons, parts of Najaf
have very nearly no hallway at all. Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani! , the most
influential Shiite cleric in Iraq, negotiated a cease-fire Thursday, but
not before parts of Najaf had been devastated. Pinpoint fire and tight
restrictions on munitions ensure that the gold-domed Imam Ali shrine
remained all but unscathed. But the core of the city around it, a
destination of longing for millions of Shiite Muslims, is so mauled that
American commanders debate which famously ruined wartime cityscape Najaf
now resembles most...

Daily Food Shortages at Abu Ghraib Cause Riots
Donna Leinwand, USA TODAY
Each day when inmates at Abu Ghraib prison lined up for meals in October
2003, dozens left hungry. Maj. David DiNenna, an Army operations officer at
the p! rison near Baghdad, worried that soon hunger would turn to anger,
and then there would be serious trouble. He was right...

Iraqi Resistance Report for events of Monday, 23 August 2004 through
Wednesday, 25 August 2004
Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member editorial board The
Free Arab Voice
Iraqi Resistance forces at noon on Monda! y attacked the US headquarters in
ar-Ridwaniyah, west of Baghdad. The local correspondent of Mafkarat
al-Islam reported that the US central Iraqi command came under a Resistance
120mm mortar barrage after noon, Monday. As usual the Americans remained
silent about losses and damage as a result of the Resistance attack. The US
headquarters building is in fact an Iraqi Presidential Palace named the
at-Tallah Palace. US troops came under a heavy Resistance attack at the
same location last Wednesday, losing more than 18 troops dead...

Prisoner Abuse Echoes. Texas Case Sheds Light on Abu Ghraib Scandal
Jake Tapper and Marie Nelson, ABCNEWS.com
A week after the Iraqi prison scandal broke in April, President Bush sat
for an interview with the Arab-language Alhu! rra, a U.S.-financed
satellite television network .
"The people in Iraq must understand that I view those practices as
abhorrent," the president said in the interview. "They must also understand
that what took place in that prison does not represent America that I know.
The America I know is a compassionate country that believes in freedom. The
America I know cares about every individual." But Alan Elsner says the
America he knows is not as compassionate as it should be, and does not care
about every individual. Elsner is the author of Gates of Injustice: The
Crisis in America's Prisons, a book that takes a critical view of the human
rights situation in the U.S. penal system. He says he "was not that
surprised" when he first heard allegations that U.S. soldiers had abused
Iraqi detainees, "especially when it became clear that two of the
correctional officers who were involved in Abu Ghraib actually had been
prison guards in the United States" ...

Bush Admits Iraq 'Miscalculations' - NY Times
Reuters
President Bush acknowledged for the first time on Thursday that he had
miscalculated post-war conditions in Iraq, the New York Times reported. The
paper quoted Bush as sayi! ng during a 30-minute interview that he made "a
miscalculation of what the conditions would be" in post-war Iraq. But he
insisted that the 17-month-long insurgency was the unintended by-product of
a "swift victory" against Saddam Hussein's military, the Times reported...

High crimes and misdemeanours: The Impeachment of Tony Blair
Peter Oborne
Next month a group of British MPs will launch impeachment proceedings
against Tony Blair. This is a very dramatic and powerful act, rooted deep
in Britis! h history. Though once a commonplace sanction against abuse of
power by the executive, the instrument of impeachment has not been used
since 1848, when it was alleged that Lord Palmerston, while foreign
minister, had entered into a secret treaty with Russia. Nevertheless,
impeachment remains part of parliamentary law, a recourse for desperate
times. Many MPs feel certain that the moment critique has now arrived. They
remain in a state of despair at the way the Prime Minister systematically
misled the House of Commons and the British people over the Iraq war...

No ad una nuova Ustica. Signor Ministro dica la verit– sulla strage

Domenico Gallo*, Articolo 21

Frontline Iraq, Palestine
Hassan Nafaa, Al-Ahram Weekly
...I was always confident in the ability of the Iraqi people to mount a
resistance against the US occupation. Nevertheless, I had never imagined
that their movement would ! build up momentum and gather strength at the
pace we have seen. Within a very short space of time, the Iraqi resistance
has been able to expose the ugly face of America. It has proven to the
world that the US came to Iraq not as a liberator but as an invader, not as
a provider but as an avaricious taker. Contrary to its claim, it is now
abundantly clear that the US came to Iraq to stay, and to exert its control
directly over the affairs of that country, or through its handpicked
agents...

Bush’s idea of progress
Tribune comment
We’re making progress on the ground”, George Bush said this week, talking
about Iraq. If this is progress, let’s hope things don’t go really wrong. A
brief recap of the past 20 months in! Iraq reminds us that, unofficially,
14,000 civilians have died and, officially, 1,095 coalition soldiers have
been killed. “Progress” in the country was quickly initiated once the Iraqi
people were “liberated” in April 2003, and the ensuing looting and
lawlessness that followed the fall of Saddam Hussein has continued
unabated. Iraq is neither under the control of the coalition forces, its
own security services, nor under the control of the insurgents. In laymen’s
terms, this is usually called chaos, but in Iraq it is deemed to be
progress...
