After the economic measures were announced by Minister López Murphy, the
whole
rainbow of union centrals called for a general strike with mobilization for
Wednesday 21st, which will be accompanied by massive actions in every town
and
city of Argentina. A wave of occupations of Universities by the students has
already taken place (one third of the "savings" of 2 billion dollars have
been
extracted from the budget of the massive State Universities, under the
accusation that they are the "privileged" ones in this country!)
The plan is so reactionary that not even the members of Parliament of the
Justicialista Party (former Peronists), nor the FREPASO which is still part
of
the ruling Alliance can swallow it. The Justicialista blocs both in the
Senate
and the House of representatives have already rejected the plan. Three
Ministers (one of them member of the Radical party) resigned upon knowledge
of
the Plan.
Since the President and the IMF knew that these measures would not be
enforced
by the Parliament, they resorted to a decree. But the decree must be
accepted
by Parliament in order to last. This is unlikely, unless a huge amount of
money
traverses the Houses as bribery.
The MTA leader, Hugo Moyano, announced the decission of the rebel CGT to
wage
battle against the "antipatria" (homeland sellers, in our political slang)
wherever necessary, and called to a strike for Wednesday next. The CTA
leader,
Víctor de Gennaro, has denounced the "coup d'état" by the same financial
sectors that supported the coup of 1976. He also warned that democracy
itself
is at stake, since this Minister has already explained to the commanders of
the
Armed Forces (while he was Minister of Defence) that "the social problem is
a
problem of national security", a few months ago.
The fact that this team of antinational, proIMF economists, takes power a
few
days before the anniversary of the March 24th, 1976, coup makes the move
twice
as outrageous and meaningful.
Turmoil ahead. Maybe Argentina will be the place where the chain of
imperialism
breaks first. Now, good bye: I am leaving to attend some preparatory
meetings.
Hugs and write to you later,
