New communique from Marcos to "Cybernauts"
Subject: [narconews] New communique from Marcos to "Cybernauts"
Dear Colleagues,
Zapatista subcomandante Marcos has addressed a
new communiqué to "brother and sister cybernauts,"
to explain what exactly is at stake and happening
at present in the Mexican movement for indigenous
rights:

In the coming weeks, Narco News, in collaboration
with authentic journalists, activists and citizens
everywhere will be offering global Internet coverage
of the historic Zapatista Caravan, February 25 to
March 11, from Chiapas to Mexico City.
What's this got to do with the drug policy issue?
Everything.
Because the San Andrés Peace Accords, signed by
the Mexican government and the indigenous rebels
in 1996, restore local autonomy (home rule) to
certain drug and alcohol policies among other
important issues. The Caravan seeks to demand
compliance with this treaty already signed.
For more details, including a text of the San Andrés
Agreements in English, and our nine-part series on
the drug-free Zapatistas vs. the Narco-State,
there are more than two dozen links on our English
language Zapatista Caravan page:
http://www.narconews.com/zapatistacaravan.html
Finally, un fuerte abrazo to all the authentic
journos and citizens who have contacted us in
recent days to coordinate team press coverage
of this massive caravan through 12 states.
By the time the US court-appointed president
George W. Bush arrives in Mexico on February
16th to meet his counterpart Vicente Fox, the
Zapatista Caravan will be a week from its launch.
The eyes of América will be on México for much
of this month to come. We'll continue reporting
on Plan Colombia and all the other flash points
in the failed war on drugs, but we urge our readers
to pay close attention as history unfolds next
door.
Y qué se cumplen los Acuerdos de San Andrés,
Al Giordano
