Maurizio nel 2000 ha contratto un virus. Dopo la malattia si rimise in piedi, anche se con problemi nel camminare. Tutto rimase invariato fino al 2004 quando Maurizio cominciò a peggiorare. Oggi  non si muove quasi più e fa fatica anche a parlare. Eppure le analisi dicono che il suo quadro clinico è INVARIATO, le analisi vanno bene, non è affetto da Sclerosi Multipla, né da SLA, né da altre simili patologie, ma nessun medico sa spiegarsi come mai questo stia succedendo. Nessuno capisce e lui sta morendo.

During the year 2000, Maurizio contracted a virus. After a first recovering from the illness, he was on his feet again, even with some serious problem when walking. All kept unchanged until 2004, when his condition worsened. Nowadays he is almost motionless and he can speak only with extreme difficulty, in spite of the analysis attesting that the clinical situation is unchanged. Maurizio is not affected by multiple sclerosis, nor by SLA, not even by similar pathologies. No doctor can explain what is really going on and Maurizio is slowly passing away.

All’ospedale dove fu ricoverato nel 2000 con febbre altissima, diagnosticarono erroneamente una polmonite e fu curato per quella. Quando i medici si accorsero che stava drammaticamente peggiorando lo trasferirono all’Ospedale Civile di Brescia dove gli venne diagnosticata una meningoencefalite mieloradicolite e fu curato con cortisonici.

Il ritardo nella cura provocò una lesione al midollo spinale (genericamente mielopatia) che compromise l’uso degli arti inferiori. Maurizio poteva comunque camminare, a volte – se era stanco – con un bastone. Non era certo come prima, ma la vita era sopportabile. Poteva lavorare e si sposò. Nel 2004 iniziò un lento peggioramento, che oggi ha, invece, una velocità galoppante. Maurizio è stato visto e curato dai migliori medici italiani che si occupano di malattie neurologiche, ma nessuno di loro sa spiegare il fenomeno. In pratica le sue terminazioni funzionano, e questo vuol dire che dovrebbe potersi muovere così come agli inizi, ma i suoi muscoli non reagiscono.

At the place where he was hospitalized with a very high fever, the medical team made a wrong diagnosis of pneumonia and he was treated in consequence. When the medical team realized that he was dramatically worsening, Maurizio was moved to the main hospital of the town. The doctors in charge diagnosed a meningoencephalitis and myeloradicolitis and he was treated by using cortisone based drugs. The delay in treatment provoked a damage to the spinal marrow (in generic terms defined as myelopathy) that compromises the use of the lower limbs. Maurizio could still walk by using a stick. His life was not as before but he could cope with that situation. He could work again, then he decided to get married. In the course of the year 2004, he w orsened again, at the beginning it was very slowly, then, step by step, more and more quickly.

Il cortisone tende a farlo stare meglio, ma non riesce più ad avere un beneficio sufficiente: appena smette la situazione torna come prima e peggiora. Ha già affrontato cure con immunosoppressori ma senza nessun risultato. I medici non sanno più che fare e lui si sente abbandonato. Presto sarà solo un altro numero nelle statistiche. A meno che non si trovi qualcuno che sa.

Maurizio has been examined and treated by some of the best Italian neurologists, but none of them could exactly explain what was going on. Maurizio’s nervous terminations do not properly work, it means that he should be able to move as before but his muscles do not react. Cortisone shows the tendency to make him feel better, but the benefit is not enough: as soon as he stops, the situation becomes as before and he suddenly worsens. He has already tried immune suppressors, but without appreciable result. All doctors feel impotent and Maurizio feels abandoned. He will be soon a mere number in a statistical data list. The only possible solution consists in finding somebody who knows what is going on. It is evident that Maurizio is facing a very uncommon dise ase. We are convinced that somewhere somebody who knows how to treat this disease should exist.

È chiaro che si tratta di una malattia assai rara, ma siamo convinti che ci sia qualcuno in grado di sapere di cosa si tratta e di curarla. Vi prego, pertanto, di fare in modo che il maggior numero di persone venga a conoscenza di questa cosa e ne parli. A cosa serve avere Internet e il villaggio globale se non si riescono a far arrivare le informazioni necessarie a salvare una vita?

Please, do all what you can in order to inform the most of people and talk about this dramatic situation. Internet and the globalized village are quite useless if it will not be possible to spread about information in order to save somebody’s life!
