Introduction

This month’s Sustainable Development International newsletter sees
Microsoft innovations at the WSIS as well as increased communication
between mining and community interests coordinated by ICMM and a series of
reports from the United Nations Climate Change Conference by SDI

The Community Development Toolkit
 ICMM has recently published a new toolkit in partnership with the World
Bank with funding support from the Energy Sector Management Assistance
Programme (ESMAP). The Community Development Toolkit is designed to foster
closer relations between mining companies, communities and governments in
order to support community development activities that last beyond the life
of a mining operation.

Major international award at the Climate Summit in Montreal
At the international Climate Summit in Montreal, Bayer received the “Low
Carbon Leaders Award” for its achievements over the last ten years in the
field of climate protection. An international jury of experts made up of
representatives from politics, non-governmental organizations and industry,
appointed by the renowned climate protection organization The Climate
Group, voted Bayer “best in class”. It was the only German company to
receive this status, which is awarded to the top five companies. In the
global climate protection ranking Bayer was rated third out of a total of
the biggest 500 companies.
