Trump recently announced that he will increase the Unites States' military presence in Afghanistan. His speech was vague on the details but he made it clear that they will send more troops overseas and America's longest war will not end soon. This is all thanks to a blank check for war that Congress wrote back in 2001.

The 2001 Authorization for the Use of Military Force (AUMF) gave the office of the president unchecked powers to wage war "anywhere, anytime, for any length by any president," in the words of Representative Barbara Lee.

The world cannot afford for Trump to have unquestioned war powers.

Since 2001, the bill has been used to justify combat in countries ranging from Afghanistan and the Philippines to Kenya and Iraq. 16 years later, the 2001 AUMF remains in effect and the war in Afghanistan wages on, continuing to take lives and leave the Middle East in even more chaos and insecurity. Now, it'll help Trump send more troops to Afghanistan and keep the "forever war" going.

The American government must act now and stop Trump's unchecked war powers.

Currently there's an effort with support on both sides of the political spectrum to update the AUMF to apply only to the current threats America faces. The repeal and updated law would more strictly define what the US president can and can't do when defending the country in war.

The American government must know that the world is watching. Now is our chance to make noise as an international community for peace in Afghanistan. Sign the petition and tell the US government to revoke Trump's blank check for war in Afghanistan.
