US begins training sorties in Poland
By Airman 1st Class Ryan Conroy
31st Fighter Wing Public Affairs

LASK AIR BASE, Poland: U.S. Fighting Falcons assigned to the 31st Fighter Wing at Aviano Air Base, Italy, began off-station aerial training for the first time since their arrival at Detachment 1, 52nd Operations Group here, March 18.

The training enhances interoperability, allowing pilots to take advantage of a unique opportunity to operate across the range of military operations with precise full-spectrum capabilities.

"Bilateral training is essential for future operations within NATO responsibilities," said Lt. Col. John Peterson, 555th Fighter Squadron commander. "When we execute operations in possible real-world situations, we need to have taken the opportunity to train with our fellow NATO nations. In this case, having been invited by the Polish government to train with Polish air force counterparts, it's a unique opportunity for us to combine forces."

On the first day of flying, 16 pilots acclimated to a new airspace and local area procedures. Due to information provided by Polish air force pilots, the flying mission was a success.

...

As the training continues, the scenarios become more complex allowing pilots to exercise their capabilities to a comprehensive extent.

"We are going to be able to enhance each one of the tactical training missions and take our skill sets to the next level," said Sanford. "This will be even more evident when we get the opportunity to train in the air with the Polish fighter pilots."

Reflecting upon previous training missions with NATO allies, Sanford realizes influential lessons learned through bilateral integration.

"I flew with Bulgarian aircraft in 2012 and with the Portuguese F-16s a month ago. There are so many lessons learned and each one provides insight to how we are able to effectively pick up our entire operation and be ready to train or fight within a matter of days in a different NATO country," said Sanford. "The most important piece of information I've learned, each country brings something to the fight and in my opinion--that's what makes our coalition efforts so effective."

Aerial training will continue with the integration of Polish F-16s to strengthen U.S. and Polish communication and combine in-flight tactics.

Nicolas Maduro: Ukrainian crisis is response to US and EU anti-Russian policy

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has accused both the US and the EU of “double standards” over Crimea and recalled the Kosovo and Falkland Islands referendums as evidence. Maduro says the West is seeking to “eventually destroy” Russia.

“There is a certain transnational elite that has been cherishing this dream for 300 years,” Nicolas Maduro said.

The Venezuelan leader criticized “the anti-Russian policy of the US and some European countries,” saying the crisis in Ukraine comes as a response to that.

“What has happened in Crimea is a response to the format that made Ukrainian democracy collapse. And there is only one reason for this: the anti-Russian policy of the US and some European countries. They seek to encircle Russia in order to weaken and eventually destroy it,” he said.

His statement comes amid deteriorating relations between Russia and both the US and the EU. The latter imposed first sanctions against Russian officials as the Crimean Peninsula sought to separate from Ukraine. The West threatened that more sanctions would follow after the March-16 referendum in Crimea, in which over 96 percent of its citizens voted to join Russia. The treaty was signed between the two sides on Tuesday.

As the US and the EU considered the referendum “illegitimate” and refused to recognize its results, the Venezuelan President accused them of “double standards” over the Crimean vote. He recalled similar situations with Kosovo and the Falkland Islands.

“This is a major game of double standards,” Maduro said. “So it was legal, from the point of view of international politics, to separate Serbia 10 years ago and take Kosovo away from it through a referendum. It turns out that trying to take away the Falkland Islands, which are located here in Latin America, through a forged and illegal referendum, was justified for Europe and Britain. But when it comes to the people of Crimea, who want a referendum and choose a peaceful future for themselves, this is illegal,” he added.

U.S. reaffirms military protection in Baltics

VILNIUS: U.S. Vice President Joe Biden reaffirmed U.S. military protection of the Baltic region during a meeting on Wednesday with the presidents of Lithuania and Latvia.

Biden stressed the U.S. would respond to any aggression on NATO allies under its Article 5 during his meeting with Dalia Grybauskaite and Andris Berzins, presidents of the two Baltic countries.

He reaffirmed collective defense commitment of the U.S. under NATO which includes all the Baltic countries to shore up the region's security amid the Ukraine crisis.

"We see that the United States is immediately responding to the situation and taking all necessary actions to ensure regional security. The augmented NATO air policing mission in Zokniai is one of such examples," said Grybauskaite.

More ground and naval military drills and training will be considered in the Baltic region, Biden added.

A diversified and flexible energy market for the Baltics is also supported by the U.S., according to Biden.

During his meeting with president of Poland the previous day, Biden underscored new opportunities for military training and exercises through NATO in Poland.

The missile defense plans continued on schedule, including placing an operational missile defense site in Poland by 2018, he added.

Six F-15 fighter jets and one KC-135 aerial refueling aircraft sent by the U.S. arrived at the Lithuanian Air Force Aviation Base in Siauliai on March 6, adding to the four F-15s already there for the air patrol mission.

Last autumn, during a meeting between presidents of the three Baltic countries and the U.S. in Washington, a joint political declaration was signed where it was reiterated that the U.S. had a real, profound and enduring interest in the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Baltics.

US, UK military to stage NATO exercises in Ukraine

Ukraine will play host, but the US military will call the shots, in an upcoming military exercise called Rapid Trident that will bring together some 1,300 international forces in Ukraine for a long-planned exercise.

Although the United States canceled Atlas Vision 2014, which was scheduled to take place in July in the northeastern Russian city of Chelyabinsk, the Pentagon says it will go ahead with plans for a multinational military exercise this summer in Ukraine.

Rapid Trident 2014 is designed to "promote regional stability and security, strengthen partnership capacity and foster trust while improving interoperability between the land forces of Ukraine, and NATO and partner nations," according to the US forces in Europe website.

The Pentagon refused to provide information on the number of US forces expected to participate in the maneuvers.

US Army spokesman Col. Steven Warren said Rapid Trident is the only Ukraine military exercise the United States plans to participate in this year. The exercise is intended to help the Ukrainian military improve its troops and weapons operability with NATO forces.

Last year's Rapid Trident, which focused on "airborne and air-mobile infantry operations," according to a report on the Rapid Trident website, brought together 17 NATO countries for joint exercises.

According to Rapid Trident’s Facebook page, last year’s exercises involved “more than 800 pieces of weaponry and about 170 military and combat vehicles... In addition, 4 Mi -8 helicopters, a military transport aircraft An- 26 of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and a German transport aircraft C- 160 were involved to work out airborne operations and elements of evacuation of the wounded from the field of battle.”

However, given the level of hysteria that has been generated by the Ukrainian crisis, Rapid Trident 2014 will take place under entirely different circumstances than last year’s event.

The Pentagon has already dispatched 12 warplanes and hundreds of troops to Poland following the Crimean referendum on Sunday that witnessed an overwhelming majority of residents voting in favor of joining Russia.

Last week, the US military announced that the aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush and its group would remain in the Mediterranean Sea for a few more days than planned “to reassure US allies” over the Ukraine crisis.

On Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin, together with the Prime Minister of Crimea and the mayor of Sevastopol, signed an agreement in Moscow for Crimea and Sevastopol to join the Russian Federation.

In addition to US and UK troops, Rapid Trident 2014 will include units from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Canada, Georgia, Germany, Moldova, Poland, Romania and Ukraine.

Rapid Trident military exercises have been held annually on the territory of Ukraine for a number of years.

Ukraine has a partner relationship with NATO but is not officially a member.

NATO secretary general fears Russia may "go beyond Crimea"

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen believes that Crimea's accession to Russia is part of Russia's global strategy and fears that "Russia will go beyond Crimea and the next goal will be the eastern provinces of Ukraine."

When speaking at the Brookings Institute in Washington on Wednesday, Rasmussen said that the alliance was worried that "Russia was turning its gaze further eastward and potentially preparing to seize other regions of Ukraine."

The NATO secretary general warned that if Russia continued its invasion, it would make a choice in favor of isolation in the international arena.

The events in Ukraine and Crimea's reunification with Russia have changed the world and have further consolidated the alliance between America and Europe, Rasmussen said, adding that relations between NATO and Russia can no longer remain "just business".

Today the world is different from what it was less than a month ago, Rasmussen said.

Ukraine seeks joint military drills with its security guarantors on Ukrainian territory - NSDC decision

KYIV: Kyiv is drafting an address to the guarantors of its security, sovereignty and territorial integrity asking them to help arrange joint military exercises on Ukrainian territory, Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) Secretary Andriy Parubiy said.

"A decision has been made both to terminate [Ukraine's] chairmanship of the CIS and to launch the procedure for its withdrawal from the CIS. A plan has also been formulated along with an address requesting joint exercises of the Ukrainian army and our allies - the guarantors of our country's security - on the territory of Ukraine. Such an address has also been prepared, and we are now working on this statement," he said at a press briefing after the council's session on Wednesday evening.

Ukraine refuses to preside over CIS in 2014 – Ukraine's Foreign Ministry

Ukraine has decided to end its presidency of the CIS in 2014, Ukraine's Foreign Ministry has reported.

"Ukraine has decided not to continue its presidency of the CIS in 2014," Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Yevhen Perebyinis said on Wednesday.

According to him, the CIS, instead of fulfilling its main tasks, had become "an instrument for the implementation of the interests of individual members of the Commonwealth, in particular Russia."

Perebyinis said that because of the situation in Crimea, Ukraine insisted that the CIS adopt a resolution that condemns aggression. Kyiv relied on the fact that CIS organization is based on the principles of respect for sovereignty and the inviolability of borders.

"Unfortunately, recent events have proved the contrary," the diplomat said.

Despite Ukraine being one of the founders of the CIS, under the Belavezha Accords signed in 1991, it has not ratified the CIS charter and de jure is not a CIS member state.
