World’s largest submarine exercise tackles terrorism
From 17 February to 1 March 2006, ten NATO countries will take part in the world’s largest anti-submarine exercise, Noble Manta, which will also focus on defence against terrorism.
The exercise will take place in the Ionian Sea, southeast of Sicily. Forces are provided by Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States of America.
The annual exercise demonstrates NATO’s determination to maintain proficiency in coordinated anti-submarine, anti-surface, and coastal surveillance operations.
This year, the exercise will also test submarine roles and missions in defence against terrorism.
NATO Forces Gather in the Mediterranean for the World’s Largest Annual Anti-Submarine Warfare Exercise
Naples, 14 February 2006. Ten NATO nations will provide eight submarines, fifteen maritime patrol aircraft/land-based anti-submarine helicopters and eight surface ships to take part in NOBLE MANTA 06, the world’s largest anti-submarine warfare (ASW) exercise from 17 February to 01 March 2006.
The exercise will take place in the Ionian Sea to the Southeast of Sicily. Forces are provided by Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States of America.
Eight submarines are scheduled to join the exercise; one each from France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Spain and United State of America, and two from Turkey. Each submarine will have the opportunity of being a hunter as well as the prey. Surface ships from NATO’s standing naval force will take part, as well as a French Frigate and an Italian Patrol Boat.
The exercise will demonstrate NATO’s determination to maintain proficiency in coordinated anti-submarine, anti-surface, and coastal surveillance operations using a multi-national force of ships, submarines and aircraft. Additionally this year traditional submarine roles and missions will be exercised in support of defence against terrorism.
Maritime Patrol Aircraft from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States of America will operate from Sigonella, Sicily. Italian shore-based ASW helicopters from Fontanarossa, Sicily will also participate. Over 80 air missions are planned, and on average this will result in a crew briefing every four hours, day and night, throughout the exercise.
The exercise will be controlled from the co-located multi-national Headquarters of the Commander Submarines Allied Naval Forces and the Commander Maritime Air Naples, Italy.
Noble Manta 06 is conducted under the supervision of the scheduling Headquarters, Allied Maritime Component Command Naples.

Ha inizio oggi 17 febbraio la Noble Manta 06, la vasta esercitazione annuale che si terrà nel mar Ionio fino al 1° marzo e che coinvolge dieci nazioni: Canada, Francia, Germania, Grecia, Italia, Portogallo, Regno Unito, Stati Uniti e Turchia.
L'esercitazione avrà come scenario un'area che include il mar Ionio fino al sud-est della Sicilia.
1I mezzi coinvolti che assumeranno le vesti di role players sono: otto sommergibili (forniti da Francia, Germania, Grecia, Italia, Spagna, Stati Uniti e due dalla Turchia); otto unità di superficie; 15 aerei pattugliatori marittimi (forniti da: Canada, Francia, Germania, Italia, Portogallo, Regno Unito, Spagna e Stati Uniti) che opereranno dalla base siciliana di Sigonella ed elicotteri italiani Anti-submarine warfare che Mpa001 opereranno da Fontanarossa, in Sicilia. All'esercitazione prenderanno parte unità di superficie della forza navale permanente della Nato, una fregata francese e un pattugliatore d'altura italiano.
Regole dell'esercitazione: quest'anno i sommergibili, ognuno dei quali si alternerà nel ruolo di preda e cacciatore, si eserciteranno anche nel supporto alla difesa contro il terrorismo.
Scopo dell'esercitazione: mantenimento dell'efficienza di coordinamento tra forze navali, sottomarine ed aeree multinazionali in operazioni anti-sommergibile, anti-superficie e di sorveglianza delle coste.
Sono pianificate 80 missioni aeree e un briefing agli equipaggi ogni quattro ore, giorno e notte, nel corso di tutta l'esercitazione. Non è prevista la presenza di giornalisti.
Noble Manta sarà sotto il controllo del comando alleato multinazionale dei sommergibili di Napoli e del comando alleato multinazionale marittimo aereo di Napoli. Responsabile dell'esercitazione è l'ammiraglio di squadra Roberto Cesaretti, comandante della componente marittima alleata di Napoli.
