DIETRO ALLE SBARRE: UOMINI O MOSTRI



Modena,14 maggio 2005



"Dietro alle sbarre : uomini o mostri" E' il titolo dell' evento sulla pena
di morte  che si svolgerà a Modena sabato, 14 maggio 2005 con il patrocinio
del Comune di Modena.



Si tratta di una manifestazione che partirà da Piazza Roma alle ore 15.30,
con l'apertura dell'Assessore alle politiche sociali Francesca Maletti, per
proseguire attraverso le vie del centro.



Seguirà poi una conferenza alle ore 18.00 in Piazza Matteotti, aperta dal
sindaco Giorgio Pighi.



Diverse sono state le lettere di patrocinio morale a questa iniziativa che
sono arrivate all' indirizzo del sindaco e della Giunta comunale da parte
di diverse associazioni locali, nazionali e americane, oltre che diversi
personaggi pubblici.

Comitato Paul Rogeau, Rete Lilliput, Coalizione Texana contro la pena di
morte, Coalizione Italiana contro la pena di morte, Comitato di difesa Karl
Guillen, Ass. Nazim Hikmet, Suor Helen Prejan, Journey of Hope, National
Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty, New Jearsyans against death
penalty, Coalition for Truth and Justice, Tennessee Coalition against State
Killing, Daria Bignardi, Marco Cinque sono alcuni nomi che hanno appoggiato
questo evento.



Organizzata da tre cittadine modenesi, Cecilia Negri, Katia Rabacchi e
Monica Licata che da anni corrispondono con diversi condannati a morte
americani, l'evento vuole risvegliare l'attenzione su un argomento ancora
poco conosciuto, cui però E' facille aggrapparsi qualora succedano fatti di
cronaca sconvolgenti.



PROGRAMMA



Al di fuori di ogni influenza politica, la conferenza vuole ragionare su
cosa sia la pena di morte, con particolare riferimento agli Stati Uniti d'
America, attraverso la partecipazione della Coalizione italiana contro la
pena di morte e di Dave Atwood, abolizionista dell'anno americano,
presidente della Texas Coalition Against Death Penalty.



Seguirà l' intervento del familiare di una vittima, Bill Pelke, nipote di
Ruth Pelke assassinata il 14 maggio 1985 in Indiana da alcune ragazze
15enni.

Abolizonista, ha fondato l'associazione Journey of Hope.



La conferenza terminerà con l' intervento di Magdaleno Rose Avila,
fondatore della fondazione Homies Unidos che da anni si occupa di gang e
violenza giovanile. Insieme a suor Helen Prejan co fondatore della
Moratorium Campaign.



Il giornalista Marco Cinque interverrà con letture di poesie scritte da
condannati a morte.

BEHIND BARS: MEN OR MONSTERS

Modena, May, 14th 2005



"Behind bars: men or monters" is the theme of the event about the death
penalty that will take place in Modena, Italy, on Saturday, May 14th 2005.



The event is patronized by the city of Modena.



This day will firstly see an anti - death penalty demonstration that will
start at " Piazza Roma" at 3.30 p.m.; it will be opened by Mrs Francesca
Maletti, Social Politics' Alderman. Then the procession will move along the
streets of Modena's centre.



Ended the rally, there will be a conference, at 6.00pm. in "Piazza
Matteotti", opened by the Mayor of the city, Mr Giorgio Pighi.



Many peolple, Italian and international associations wrote letters to the
Mayor, expressing their support to this event. For example Paul Rogeau
Board, Rete Lilliput, Texas Coalition Against Death Penalty, Italian
Coalition Against Death Penalty, Karl Guillen Board, Nazim Hikmet
Association, Suor Helen Prejan, Journey of Hope, National Coalition to
Abolish the Death Penalty, New Jearsyans Against Death Penalty, Coalition
for Truth and Justice, Tennessee Coalition Against State Killing, Daria
Bignardi, Marco Cinque.



This day has been organized by three italian citizens, Cecilia Negri, Katia
Rabacchi e Monica Licata; they have been dealing with the death penalty for
years, writing also to death row inmates.



PROGRAM



The Conference aims to have peolple think about the reality of the death
penalty, especially for what concerns United States, through the
experiences of different speakers, both Italian and American.

Chiara Silva, member of the Italian Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty,
will speak about her correspondence with death row inmates, whom she visits
periodically.

In May 2002 she witnessed the execution of her frined Johnny Martinez - Texas.



Dave Atwood, president of the Texas Coalition Against the Death Penalty,
will give a general idea on what the death penalty means and will show the
reasons why it shuold be abolished .



The next to intervene will be Bill Pelke, a victim relative, nephew of Ruth
Pelke who was killed in 1985 in the state of Indiana by Paula Cooper.

Founder of the Journey of Hope, he has been cooperating with many anti-
death penalty organizations, such as The National Coalition to Abolish the
Death Penalty, being also elected abolitionist of the year.



Shujaa Graham, released from California death row in 1981, will offer his
thought about the death penalty, from the point of view of a man who lived
for four years waiting for his execution. Found innocent, he was then freed.



The conference will end with Magdaleno Rose Avila's intervention; he is the
Homies Unidos founder, an association run by gangs members who are
searching an alternative to violence. With Sister Helen Prejean, he founded
the Moratorium Campaign.



The journalist Marco Cinque will read some poems written by death row inmates.

La Repubblica Romana fu il primo stato sovrano a scrivere nella propria
costituzione l'abolizione totale della pena di morte, il 3 luglio 1849. Il
Comitato, ispirandosi alla tradizione libertaria ed abolizionista del
nostro Paese, si batte contro la pena di morte e per il rispetto dei
diritti  umani indicati agli articoli  2 - 21 della Dichiarazione
Universale.
The Roman Republic was the first state to write in its constitution the
total abolition of the death penalty, on 3rd July 1849. This Committee
follows this tradition fighting against the death penalty and for the human
rights listed in the articles 2-21 of the Universal Declaration of 10th
December 1948.
