Attivisti ridotti alla fame dal salario Nike - Clean clothes campaign

Chi e' iscritto a questa lista dall'estate scorsa ricordera' l'avventura di
Leslie Kretzu e Jim Keady, due attivisti americani che durante i giochi
olimpici di Sydney si sono letteralmente calati nei panni degli operai
indonesiani della Nike adottandone stile di vita, dieta, e ovviamente
salario. L'iniziativa, chiamata "Olympic living wage project" (progetto
salario dignitoso per i giochi olimpici) e' promossa dall'ong americana
Press for Change in collaborazione con il Nicaraguan Solidarity Committee e
Nikewatch.

Ecco in sintesi gli aggiornamenti che ci arrivano da Jim Keady tramite la
Clean Clothes Campaign:

ATTIVISTI PER I DIRITTI DEI LAVORATORI RIDOTTI ALLA FAME DAL SALARIO PAGATO
DALLA NIKE

Jim Keady e Leslie Kretzu sono rientrati alla fine di ottobre dall'Indonesia
dove hanno vissuto nel mese di agosto in un quartiere degradato alla
periferia di Jakarta condividendo il tenore di vita dei lavoratori della
Nike che vi abitano in gran numero. "Si puo' sopravvivere, ma non certo
vivere con uno stipendio da 1 dollaro e 25 centesimi", ha detto Keady, "E'
un salario da fame. Lo posso confermare. Ho perso 11 chili e ho passato
quasi tutto il mese privo di forze e tormentato dai morsi della fame".
Leslie Kretzu, che prima di partire per l'Indonesia ha lavorato come
volontaria per i Missionaries of Charity (missionari della carita') a
Calcutta, ha osservato: "Dopo aver visto la poverta' estrema di Calcutta,
posso dire che le donne e gli uomini che lavorano per le fabbriche della
Nike in Indonesia non stanno molto meglio. La cosa scandalosa e' che
lavorano dalle 8 alle 15 ore al giorno per la piu' redditizia fra le aziende
produttrici di scarpe sportive e, malgrado questo, non riescono a soddisfare
i bisogni vitali".

Jim e Leslie sono impegnati in questi giorni in una serie di conferenze nel
nord-est degli Stati Uniti che si concludera' alla fine di novembre. Nei
mesi di dicembre e di gennaio sono disponibili per i gruppi che volessero
incontrarli al di fuori degli Stati Uniti, per raccontare di:

- Come Jim ha perso 11 chili e Leslie 7 chili vivendo del salario pagato
dalla Nike
- Le operaie costrette a "dimostrare" di avere le mestruazioni
- Le pressioni esercitate sui lavoratori perche' diano informazioni false
agli ispettori "indipendenti" della Nike
- L'invito agli atleti sponsorizzati dalla Nike di visitare Tangerang (credo
sia il quartiere dove abitano gli operai, n.d.t.)
- La scoperta di componenti difettose destinate a essere bruciate in un
villaggio

Brevi note biografiche:

Jim Keady e' stato allenatore della squadra di calcio studentesca della
St.John's University. Costretto a lasciare l'incarico per aver pubblicamente
rifiutato di indossare l'abbigliamento che Nike forniva in qualita' di
sponsor, ha poi tentato di farsi assumere per sei mesi in una fabbrica di
scarpe sportive Nike nel sud-est asiatico. Ma la multinazionale americana
non ha gradito l'offerta.
Leslie Kretzu ha lavorato come volontaria presso i Missionaries of Charity a
Calcutta e a Katmandu, e con i Jesuit Volunteer Corps ad Anheim, California.
Ha preso parte a diverse campagne a sostegno dei diritti delle donne.
