E' ufficiale: gli USA contro i ribelli albanesi in Macedonia

Saturday March 24 6:42 PM ET, By Jonathan Wright

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Secretary of State Colin Powell called Macedonia's
president on Saturday to express U.S. support for his government against
ethnic Albanian extremists and offer help with political overtures to the
Albanian minority.

Powell and Macedonian President Boris Trajkovski spoke for about 20
minutes, State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said. The secretary of
state also had telephone conversations on Macedonia with NATO and EU
officials.

Macedonian forces have gone on the offensive against ethnic Albanian
guerrillas demanding greater rights for the ethnic Albanian minority in the
small Balkan state. The Macedonians say many of the guerrillas have crossed
the border from Kosovo, the province of Serbia that has been under NATO
military control since the Kosovo war in 1999.
