Dear recipient,

We are proud to inform you that a new major bibliographic work on the
Southern Sudan has been compiled by Prof. Terje Tvedt at the Centre for
Development Studies at the University of Bergen. The bibliography is entitled

The book is the result of more than 15 years of academic work in the
region, including visits to a great number of libraries both in the Sudan
and beyond. A few of the basic facts about the contents and focal points of
the work may elucidate its importance for all interested in the region:

-2 volumes and 1091 pages.
-6234 books, articles and reports about the region from 1850 to 2000.
-3218 of the entries with annotations in order to help and guide the user
of the bibliography.
-All disciplines and topics are covered.
-The bibliography contains the most detailed chronology of events in the
Southern Sudan from 1972 to 2000 available
-It also has an extensive inventory of NGOs working in the region since
1972 with a description of activities and addresses.

Prospective readers and scope
The two-volume work is the first comprehensive bibliography on the Sudan in
general and the Southern Sudan especially. The broad thematic scope and its
many annotations makes it a unique source for knowledge about the region,
exploring literature related to history, anthropology, development aid,
emergency aid, nature, climate, language etc. It should therefore be of
interest to NGOs, UN organisations, politicians, journalists, researchers
and others.
