Death toll from Sudan raid on rebel towns up to 14
NAIROBI, Nov 21 (Reuters) - The death toll from Monday's air
raid by a Sudan air force plane on the rebel-held southern town
of Yei has reached 14, with 51 injured, a Western aid
organisation said on Tuesday.
Dan Eiffe, a spokesman for the Norwegian People's Aid (NPA)
group which operates in the town, said a high-altitude Antonov
plane dropped 14 bombs on Yei at 2:45 p.m. (1145 GMT) on Monday,
many of them landing in Yei's central market.
"It is one of the worst bombings of the war," Eiffe told
Reuters. "There was no warning, no chance for people to escape."
Yei, with a normal population of around 80,000, is the
largest town held by the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA)
in south Sudan.
The SPLA has been fighting since 1983 against a succession
of governments in Khartoum for independence or greater autonomy
in the south.
Hundreds of thousands of people have been killed in the
conflict, which pits the Arabised, Muslim north against the
black animist or Christian southerners.
