1. ULTIMA NEWSLETTER. ANDIAMO IN FERIE!
*****************************************
Eh sì! Andiamo in ferie anche noi. Siamo arrivati all'ultima newsletter
prima della pausa estiva. Riprenderemo alla fine di agosto. Abbiamo salutato
i nostri due volontari Piotr e Gokay e siamo in attesa dei nuovi che
arriveranno il primo settembre dalla Polonia e dall'Albania. Per il prossimo
autunno abbiamo in mente numerose cose. Qualche esempio? Due corsi on line
che si misureranno con temi rilevanti come la cooperazione internazionale e
l'immigrazione. La diffusione dei risultati di una ricerca che stiamo
concludendo sulla rappresentazione sociale degli immigrati sulla stampa
locale. Una serie di incontri sull'Africa: il primo sulla Somalia. Si parla
tanto (almeno in questi giorni) di questo Paese per le sue possibili
implicazioni rispetto al terrorismo internazionale. Come sempre la questione
è molto più complessa. Abbiamo anche in mente di ricordare un grande
personaggio come Thomas Sankarà, indimenticabile presidente rivoluzionario
burkinabè. E poi analogamente all'anno scorso diremo addio al vecchio anno
salutando quello nuovo con un capodanno multietnico. Insomma, ci andiamo a
riposare e a ricaricare le batterie. Ma prima di augurarvi buone ferie (per
chi le farà... sappiamo che molti comunque non le faranno ora) vogliamo
anche segnalarvi il primo dei nostri appuntamenti di settembre: l'anno nuovo
etiopico che cade l'11 settembre. Vi aspettiamo!

Yeah! We too are going to holidays. Arrived at the last newsletter before
the summer break. We will go back the end of August. We have greeted ours
two volunteers Piotr and Gokay and we are waiting for the new ones who will
arrive first of September from Poland and Albania. For the next autumn we
have in mind many things. Some example? Two on line courses that will deal
with important topics like international cooperation and immigration. The
diffusion of the outcomes of a research that we are concluding on the
immigrants social representation on the local press. One series of meetings
concerning Africa: the first one will regard Somalia. It is spoken so much
(at least in these days) of this Country for its possible implications as
far as international terrorism. As always the issue is much more complex. We
have also in mind to remember a great person like Thomas Sankarà, burkinabe
unforgettable revolutionary president. And then as the past year we will say
goodbye to the old year greeting that new one with a multiethnic New Year's
Day. Thus, we go to get some rest and to recharge the batteries. But before
auguring nice holidays to you (for those who will make them... we know that
many however will not make them right away) we want also tell you the first
of our appointments in September: the Ethiopian new year's day that falls
September eleven . We wait for you!

Martedì e Giovedì dalle 10 alle 13.00 e dalle 15.00 alle 18.00. Se avete

3. L'ADRIATICO NON È FRONTIERA
*********************************
È il titolo del nuovo libro di Bruno Bravetti Segretario Generale del Forum
delle città dell' Adriatico e dello Ionio. Ecco cosa scrive Ljerka
Simunkovic, docente presso l'Università di Spalato, nella prefazione:
" Il testo è davvero ricchissimo; non c'è dimensione, situazione, segmenti
della adriaticità che non trovi accoglienza, che non sia rievocato, che non
sia oggetto di riflessione e di profonda elaborazione. Più che il letterato
e lo storico è il giornalista che si impegna nella rievocazione, per cui non
troveremo il testo appesantito dalle note a piè pagina come nella maggior
parte delle rievocazioni storiche, ma avremo sempre una documentazione
attendibile come viene appunto dimostrato dall' ampia ed aggiornata
bibliografia...
Il volume di 250 pagine, con testo in italiano ed inglese, edito da
"affinità elettive" di Ancona si articola in quattordici capitoli che
comprendono, fra l'altro, le vicende dei pirati e dei corsari, le tecniche e
la cultura nella costruzione delle imbarcazioni, i lazzaretti e le torri di
guardia, le migrazioni ed infine le persistenze alimentari nel bacino
adriatico-ionico. In appendice sono pubblicati i testi delle risoluzioni
votate al termine delle sessioni plenarie annuali (dal 1999 al 2004) del
Forum delle città dell'Adriatico e dello Ionio.
La presentazione avverrà sabato 3 settembre alle ore 17.30 nel Sala del
Consiglio Comunale di Ancona, oltre all'autore saranno presenti: Ljerka
Simunkovic docente di lingua italiana presso l'Università di Spalato,
Miroslav Rozman scrittore e studioso, Franco Sotte docente presso la Facoltà
di Economia dell' Università Politecnica delle Marche.

Is the title of the new book of Bruno Bravetti - General Secretary of the
Forum of the cities of the Adriatic and Ionian. This is what Ljerka
Simunkovic professor at the University of Split writes in the preface: "the
text is indeed richest; there is no dimension, situation, segments of "being
Adriatic" that does not find acceptance, that it is not recalled, that is
not object of reflection and deep elaboration. More than man of letters and
historian is the journalist that he is engaged in the reminding, thus we
will not find the text weighted from notes like in the greater part of the
historical works, but we will have always a reliable documentation as it
comes exactly demonstrated from the width and updated bibliography...
The volume of 250 pages, with text in Italian and English, published from
"Affinità elettive" of Ancona is articulated in fourteen chapters that
encompass, between the other, the vicissitudes of the pirates and the
corsairs, the techniques and the culture in the construction of the boats,
the contagious disease hospitals and the towers of guard, the migrations and
finally the alimentary persistence in the Adriatic-ionic basin. In appendix
are published the resolutions voted at the end of the annual plenary
sessions (from 1999 to 2004) of the Forum of the cities of the Adriatic and
the Ionian. The presentation will happen Saturdays September 3 at 5,30 pm in
the Ancona City hall. Beyond the author will be present: Ljerka Simunkovic
professor of Italian language at the University of Split, Miroslav Rozman
writer and scholar, Franco Sotte professor at the Faculty of Economy of the
Polytechnic University of Marche.

4. 24 KILLED IN KHARTOUM RIOT
*********************************
John Garang, who led Sudan's southern rebels for two decades before making
peace and joining the government he fought, has died in a helicopter crash,
sparking riots and fears for the country's hard-won stability.
At least 24 people were killed in Khartoum, a policeman said, after rioters
torched vehicles and looted shops. Witnesses said southerners, who have long
said the northern government discriminated against them, attacked Arabs in
the street.
"People have been running all over the streets. The policemen are taking
people from the streets. There is fire and smoke," a Reuters TV witness
said.
Garang, 60, a key figure in a January peace deal hailed as a rare success
story for Africa, became the country's first vice president on July 9. He
died over the weekend after the Ugandan presidential helicopter he was
traveling in went down in bad weather.
Six of Garang's companions and a crew of seven also died in the crash near
the Sudan-Uganda border, Khartoum said yesterday, though a member of the
southern Sudan leadership council said 17 bodies were recovered.
Members of Garang's southern Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) and
the government in Khartoum - bitter enemies during the 21-year conflict -
both promised to maintain the peace agreement Garang helped bring about.
Just weeks before, he had come north to take his place in government amid a
tumultuous popular welcome in Khartoum.
But as news of his death was confirmed yesterday morning, thousands of his
southern Sudanese supporters took to the streets of Khartoum in a different
mood, wielding knives and bars, looting shops, starting fires and clashing
with police.
A Reuters witness saw 12 bodies in a morgue in the capital and a police
official said all the dead, which included police, were killed in the
rioting. A Khartoum resident earlier said two people had been killed in his
street.
"They (southerners) are beating anybody they see who looks like they are
Arab," Swayd Abdullah, a student, told Reuters.
There were reports of riots in the south too.
The Khartoum governor announced a curfew from 6 p.m. until 6 a.m. in the
capital.
Garang's death stunned the region, where Sudan's neighbors helped negotiate
an end to the continent's longest civil war.
"It's shocking - the loss of a visionary leader," Kenya's Lt. Gen. Lazarus
Sumbeiywo, who was the chief mediator in the Sudan peace talks, told
Reuters. "My prayer is that the Sudanese will remain level-headed."
Sudan's President Omar Hassan Al-Bashir expressed confidence the
power-sharing peace accord would remain intact.
"We are confident that the peace agreement will proceed as it was planned,"
he said in a televised statement.
At an SPLM news conference in Nairobi, members wept in grief. "Sudan has
lost its loved son Dr. John Garang," said Salva Kiir, deputy leader and
Garang's probable replacement.
"We want to assure everyone that the leadership and all cadres of the
SPLM/SPLA (Sudan People's Liberation Army) will remain united and strive to
faithfully implement the comprehensive peace agreement."
SPLM leaders were heading to New Site in southern Sudan for a crisis
meeting. Garang's body arrived there early yesterday afternoon, a Western
diplomat with the SPLM said.
Garang had left Uganda by helicopter late on Saturday to return to Sudan
after talks with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni. Various sources in
Uganda and Sudan said it appeared his helicopter ran into bad weather,
although there was also speculation it had run out of fuel.
The helicopter came down near the remote, mountainous border region, with
conflicting reports as to which side it fell on.
Deng Alor, a member of the SPLM's leadership council, told Reuters from New
Site 17 bodies - a higher number than that given by the Sudanese
presidency - had been recovered.
"We are not ruling out anything. We have asked Uganda's aviation authority
to look at the flight recorder," he added.
Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni said yesterday he would appoint a special
panel to investigate the weekend crash of Garang's helicopter.
In addition, Museveni said Uganda had asked a foreign government to look
into Saturday's crash to definitively establish that it was an accident as
officials in Kampala have insisted and not the result of sabotage or
terrorism.
"I have decided to create a panel of three experts to look into this crash,"
Museveni said, adding that the team would be appointed shortly by Uganda's
transport minister.
"We have also approached a certain foreign government to rule out any form
of sabotage or terrorism," he said in a statement read to parliament by Vice
President Gilbert Bukenya that did not identify the government involved.
Ugandan and Sudanese officials have said the aircraft was forced to abort a
landing at New Site due to poor weather and shortly thereafter crashed in
the mountainous region near the convergence of the Ugandan, Kenyan and
Sudanese borders.
Museveni's statement dwelt at length on the safety features of the
Russian-built Mi-172 executive chopper that Uganda purchased eight years ago
and, according to him, was outfitted with advanced navigation instruments.

5. TERNI: ONU E GIOVANI A SETTEMBRE

A Terni l'8-9-10 settembre 2005 si svolgerà l'Assemblea dell'Onu dei
giovani, delle ragazze e dei ragazzi
L'Assemblea dell'Onu dei giovani, delle ragazze e dei ragazzi vuole essere
una grande occasione d'incontro organizzato dai giovani per i giovani. "Avrò
un lavoro per la vita?" "C'è qualcuno che sta decidendo la mia vita e il mio
futuro al posto mio?" "In che modo posso costruire un mondo migliore di
quello che ho ereditato?" Sono alcune delle domande che scuotono i giovani
di tutto il mondo e che saranno al centro dell'Assemblea di Terni. Tre
giorni di confronto libero e autogestito che permetteranno a tanti giovani
di conoscersi ed esprimersi in prima persona.

be a great occasion of a meeting set up by young people for young people.

better than what I have inherited?" They are some of the questions that
shake the young people of all the world and that they will at the center of
the Assembly of Terni. Three days of free and self-managed discussion that
will allow many young people to know themselves and to express themselves in
first person.
