Iraq war is the real “underlying crime” in the Libby indictment
Bill Van Auken, WSWS
The indictment in the CIA leak investigation of Vice President Dick
Cheney’s chief of staff, I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, has deepened the
political crisis of the Bush administration, while further exposing the
methods of criminality and conspiracy that extend from the White House on
down. Libby was charged Friday with obstruction of justice, perjury and
making false statements, felony offenses that together are punishable by up
to ! 30 years in prison. After being told of the charges, he resigned from
the government. Justice Department Special Counsel Patrick Fitzgerald made
it clear that the investigation into the deliberate leaking of the identity
of CIA covert operative Valerie Plame Wilson had not concluded. President
Bush’s chief political adviser, Karl Rove, remains a subject of this probe,
having for the moment avoided an indictment...

The Death of an Iraqi Prisoner
John McChesney
Photographs of grinning GIs crouched over the iced-down, battered corpse of
Manadel al-Jamadi were among the most horrific images of the 2003 Abu
Ghraib prison scandal. (...) Eyewitnesses interviewed by CIA investigators
say Jamadi was seated and stripped, and cold water was poured over him. A
Navy SEAL said at one point, the interrogator leaned into a pressure point
on Jamadi's chest with his foreman. Jamadi was then moved to Abu Ghraib for
further interrogation. At ! the prison, MPs stretched Jamadi's arms
directly behind him and shackled his wrists to window bars. If the arms
bear the full weight of the body, the position can be extremely painful.
But MPs later told CIA investigators that Jamadi had been given enough
slack to kneel or stand. During this new round of questioning by CIA
agents, Jamadi slumped forward, with his weight on his shackled wrists.
MPs, while trying to reposition Jamadi, discovered he was dead. His death
occurred within five-and-a-half hours of his capture...

the Free Arab Voice.

GI Special 3C97: "We're Not Defending Freedom" - October 29, 2005
www.militaryproject.org
BRAVE Tomas Young saw it as his patriotic duty to join the Army three days
after 9/11. Tomas, 25, wanted revenge on the terrorists who murdered nearly
2,750 people in the Twin Towers. But on his first mission in Iraq - and
before he had fired a single bullet in anger - he was left paralysed from
the chest down after being shot in an ambush. Now his anguish at never
being able to walk again has turned to anger that he and tho! usands of
others are being sent to fight an immoral war for George Bush....

Several US soldiers killed in Iraq
Aljazeera.net
Seven US soldiers have been killed in Iraq, while Shia spiritual leader

parliamentary elections. Two US soldiers were killed in separate roadside
bomb explosions in south Baghdad on Thursday, the US military said in
separate statements. A third US soldier was killed, again on Thursday, when
his vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb in Ramadi, 110km west of Baghdad,
the US military said. Two other m! ilitary personnel were also killed but
the US military did not provide details. Two US Marines were killed in an
indirect fire attack at Saqlawiyah in Falluja on Thursday, another US

Statement from Cindy Sheehan on the Indictment
AfterDowningStreet.org
...While the indictment and resignation of Lewis 'Scooter' Libby is a
welcome development but, the responsibility for lying to the American
people and targeting critics and dissidents needs to go all the way up the
chain of command. Scooter Libby was clearly one of the administration's
attack dogs unleashed on opponents of this fraudulent war, but he serves
higher masters. This administration continues to wage a war based on lies,
a war that ha! s taken the lives of 2,000 Americans, including my son, and
the lives of tens of thousands of innocent Iraqis...

Tomgram: De la Vega, a Prosecutor Considers Libby's Indictment
Tom Engelhardt & Elizabeth de la Vega
...And so they fall: Tom DeLay just weeks back. Harriet Miers yesterday. I.
Lewis ("Scooter") Libby today. Prepare yourself. It's going to be a long,
hard dive into deep waters that should, sooner or later, lead us back to
the beginning. Think of Special Counsel Patrick Fitzgerald's indictment of
the Vice President's Chief of Staff as but a judicial wade-in-the-water;
and yet the charges against Libby already brin! g to mind the cover-up
charges that unraveled the Nixon White House during the Watergate era. With
this indictment, Americans begin their official trip into the sordid
history of the planning and selling of the invasion and occupation of Iraq
via a shadow government -- what Lawrence B. Wilkerson, former chief of
staff to Secretary of State Colin L. Powell, recently called a "cabal," set
up out of Dick Cheney's office and Donald Rumsfeld's neocon-ridden
Pentagon...

Fighting national oppression
Road to anti-war unity
Fred Goldstein , Workers World
The most important task of the anti-war movement in this country is to
build a united front with the workers and oppressed peoples of the United
States. The movement must address national oppression and class
exploitation in a serious way if it is to become an effective weapon in the
struggle against imperialism, and not restrict itself to being a mere
protest movement that assembles periodically...

Exhibition at International Center of Photography
Images of El Salvador carnage reprised in light of Iraq war
Bill Van Auken, WSWS
...Indeed, the Pentagon is reportedly working on a so-called "Salvadoran
option" in Iraq. The plan, first reported in Newsweek last January, calls
for the constitution of death squads to carry out the assassination of
members of the Iraqi resistance and massacres of their supporters. Since
then, there has emerged substantial evidence that the "Salvadoran option"
is b! eing implemented. The number of death squad-style killings has grown
steadily. While frequently attributed to "sectarian violence," there is
every indication that they are the work of specially trained units drawn
from the Shiite militias and the Kurdish peshmerga...

US troops in Iraq hit record number
Will Dunham, Reuters
The United States has increased its forces in Iraq to the highest total of
the war at 161,000 troops, and the Pentagon said on Thursday it expected a
similar number in place for the December elections. The U.S. military
increased its force in Iraq in advance of the October 15 referendum in
which Iraqis approved a new constitution. The current total is about 23,000
higher than the usual level of 138,000, which includes 17 brigades...

Treasonous liars and warmongering murderers
Sheila Samples
... What attorney in his or her right mind would take on the mission of
defending a gaggle of treasonous liars and warmongering murderers against
the clearly stated, time-tested legal boundaries of the United States
Constitution? Is there an attorney so ignorant of Constitutional law or so
loyal to George W. Bush that covering his sorry ass trumps all reason,
dignity, democratic principles or truth? Does that attorney still have the
capacity to walk uprig! ht? Oh, yeah. I forgot. That attorney is Harriet
Miers who, in my humble opinion, disqualified herself the instant she said
George Bush is "the most brilliant man I have ever known..."

Saddam and al-Zarqawi: Strangers in the Night
Kurt Nimmo, Another day in the empire
According to Michael Isikoff and Mark Hosenball, writing for Newsweek,
phantom world-class bogeyman, Abu Mussab al-Zarqawi, was in Iraq in May
2002 and Saddam didn’t even know it. Of course, since Abu is invisible, or
rather no longer has a body (because he was killed in the Sulaimaniyah
Mountains of northern Iraq years ago), nobody else saw him, either, but of
course that is a small point for our over-time propagandists. As memor! y
serves, or serves for those of us who have a memory, unlike most Americans
who stumble about in the engineered nebulosity of amnesia (Gore Vidal calls
out great country the United States of Amnesia), Colin Powell, during his
now infamous dog and pony show of lies and half-truths at the United
Nations in the lead-up to the invasion of Iraq, told us al-Zarqawi had
visited Iraq for medical treatment, with the blessing of Saddam...

the neocon doomsayers. What was Chalabi’s role (while on the U.S. payroll,
through the Pentagon-funded INC) in providing fake intelligence so readily
gobbled up by Judy Miller, George Slam-Dunk Tenet, and the OSP? What is
Chalabi’s relationship to the evildoers in Iran, to whom he reportedly
blabbed out top-secret U.S. information in 2004? Who in the Pentagon
decided, without telling the CIA or the ! State Department, to fly
Chalabi’s own private militia into southern Iraq while the invasion was
still pushing its way north to Baghdad? And what sort of business
relationships does Chalabi have with the neocons?...

Future Perfect
Chris Floyd
WASHINGTON, March 12, 2007 -- Calvin J. Hooper was sworn in today as the
49th President of the United States in a quiet ceremony that many hope will
put an end to a tumultuous period that has seen the inauguration and
resignation of five chief executives in the 12 months since former
president George W. Bush fled the country for exile in Saudi Arabia.
Hooper's ascent to the presidency has been meteoric, to say the least. Two
weeks ago, he was a part-time city councilman in Salt Lick, Te! nnessee
(population 1,300). But following the indictment of most recent president
Ken Mehlman on racketeering charges for his alleged involvement in the Jack
Abramoff-Tom DeLay crime ring, a frantic search of computer records found
that Hooper was the only elected Republican official in the United States
who had neither been paid off by the ring nor was complicit in the
so-called "Nurembergate Scandal," the wide-ranging government conspiracy to
launch a war of aggression against Iraq on false pretenses...

In the Name of Justice
Monica Benderman
Kevin Benderman sits in jail. An injustice. He did not want to go. He did
not take his stand, break a law and dare the courts to put him in jail with
a stiff sentence. Kevin Benderman put his principles on the line and dared
to trust that his rights would be respected as the constitution he fought
to defend demands. Kevin Benderman did everything he could to demonstrate
to the military, and to the world, that he did not want to go to jail, by
consistently performing his req! uired duties without letting the challenge
he faced keep him from his responsibilities...
