Unwinnable War
Charley Reese
...In his recent White House remarks about Iraq, on every single occasion
Bush used the word "terrorist" instead of "insurgent." The majority of
people fighting us in Iraq are not terrorists. There are some, mainly the
suicide bombers, but the majority of them just oppose our occupation of
their country. Attacks against an opposing army cannot be called acts of
terrorism. Only attacks against civilian targets qualify as acts of
terrorism, and that's true whether the civilians are kill! ed by a suicide
bomber or an American airplane or an artillery piece...

Doing the right wing’s dirty work
Alan Maass, Socialist Worker
IT WAS no surprise when Christopher Hitchens and his fellow neo-cons
slandered British antiwar leader George Galloway during his North American
speaking tour in September. But some of the ugliest attacks on Galloway
came from liberals--namely, journalist Greg Palast and LA Weekly
commentator Marc Cooper. These hatchet jobs, directed at the best-known
antiwar figure in Britain, were obviously designed to discourage people
from turning out to hear Gallo! way speak. But they were also about
something more--trying to impose political conformity on the antiwar
movement by attempting to marginalize a figure from the left, in
particular, on the question of how the U.S. occupation has been opposed in
Iraq...

Full Report: Student Brutalized by Cops, Right-Wing Students, for
Protesting Recruiters At George Mason University
M. Junaid Alam
A Pakistani-American who served four years in the United States Air Force
as munitions personnel was beaten and brutalized by right-wing students and
campus police last Thursday at George Mason University in Fairfax,
Virginia. Tariq Khan, now a junior majoring in sociology, said he was
standing in front of the recruitment table outside the school student
center - as he has often done ! before - during noontime with a paper sign
reading, "Recruiters lie, don't be deceived," taped to his shirt. A student
approached Khan and initiated a verbal argument, screaming in his face; he
then took the flyer and ripped it up in front of him, Khan says...

Saddam's former number two urges escalation of insurgency
AFP
Saddam Hussein's former right-hand man Ezzat Ibrahim al-Duri called for an
escalation of the deadly insurgency in Iraq in a letter attributed to the
country's most wanted fugitive. Ibrahim, who has been on the run since the
US-led invasion of March 2003, urged "resistance movements and the Baath
party to intensify the national campaign against the occupation", according
to the letter published in the London-based Arabic newspaper Al-Qods
Al-Arabi...

Peace march coincidences
Xymphora
There was a big peace demonstration in Washington on September 24,
accompanied by the usual coincidences: 1. A few days before the
demonstration, the Pentagon conducted a highly classified 'demonstration'
in the Washington metropolitan area called Granite Shadow (...)2.
Detectable concentrations of tularemia bacteria, a known biological weapon,
were found at exactly the place where the march was held at the time of the
march...

Al Arabiya New Channel views captivity of its Baghdad reporter Majed Hamid
by US forces in Iraq
Al Bawaba
Al Arabiya New Channel views with mounting concern the continued captivity
of its Baghdad reporter Majed Hamid by US forces in Iraq. Majed, who was
arrested more than 3 weeks ago, is the youngest Iraqi TV journalist in US
custody in his country. Al Arabiya is also distressed by the US military
authority’s direct contravention of international law and regulations
dictating detentions of journalists for prolong! ed periods without
official charged and denying them legal counsel...

U.S. soldier describes more abuses in Iraq
Eric Schmitt The New York Times
A U.S. Army captain who has reported new allegations of detainee abuse in
Iraq has met with Senator John McCain and staff aides on the House Armed
Services Committee and given them additional accounts of abuse in Iraq that
other soldiers had sent him in recent days, according to congressional
aides. In a brief interview after his half-hour meeting with McCain on
Tuesday, the captain, Ian Fishback, declined to describe the new
information h! e gave the senator or, in a separate meeting, to the House
aides. But Fishback said that since he and two other former members of the
82nd Airborne Division accused soldiers in their battalion in Iraq last
month of routinely beating and abusing prisoners in 2003 and 2004, several
other soldiers had contacted him and asked him to relay to lawmakers their
own experiences...

Second Letter to Young Activists: But It's My Own Country!
Bernardine Dohrn
...The savage U.S. war and occupation of Iraq, the permanent war against
"terrorism," the militarization of the economy, culture, and institutions
and the consequent erosion of democracy, transparency, and liberty at home
are normalized, presented as a given, a natural phenomenon. The very notion
that we will inevitably go along, collude, itself requires us to respond
with urgency. Five years ago, the U.S. spent as much on its military as!
the next 15 countries combined. Today, the U.S. spends as much as all other
countries combined...

Trial of Saddam likely to be postponed
Ewen MacAskill, The Guardian
The trial of Saddam Hussein, scheduled to open on October 19, will almost
certainly have to be postponed, a senior British official said yesterday.
He said it would be difficult for the Iraqi administration to complete
preparations in time. No agreement has been reached on basic requirements,
such as whether the glass round the dock should be bullet-proof. A witness
protection scheme was far from ready...

Democrats demand accountability for setbacks in Iraq
AFP
Democrats accused President George W. Bush and his Republican allies in
Congress of an "information blackout" to keep the public in the dark about
recent military and political setbacks in Iraq. With recent debate over
Supreme Court nominations and hurricane relief efforts consuming Congress
for the past several weeks, Democrats have sought to refocus attention on
Iraq, where a referendum is looming on a draft constitution, and where
former dictator Saddam ! Hussein is due to stand trial shortly thereafter...

Many die in Iraq mosque explosion
Aljazeera.net
At least 25 Iraqis have been killed and about 87 wounded in a car-bomb
blast targeting Ibn al-Nama mosque in the city of Hilla, south of Baghdad,
police and hospital officials said. Some others said Wednesday's deadly
blast was caused by an explosive devise planted inside the mosque,
Aljazeera reported. The bomb exploded at the entrance of the Shia Muslim
mosque where worshippers had gathered for prayers before the breaking of
the fast on the first day of Ramadan, A! P reported quoting police and

Death Squads And Diplomacy
Robert Dreyfuss
A flurry of Arab diplomacy over the last few days is unfolding in a
rear-guard effort to prevent the crisis in Iraq from exploding into what
Saudi Foreign Minister Saud Al Faisal warned last month could be a regional
civil war involving not only Iraq, but all of its neighbors. The main, and
well-deserved, target of Saud’s ire was the increasingly authoritarian and
brutal rule of the main Iraqi Shiite parties, especially the Supreme
Council for the Islamic Revolution in I! raq (SCIRI), whose Badr Brigade
militia are terrorizing Iraq’s secular, urban Shiite population and
carrying out death-squad attacks against Sunnis. The attacks against the
Sunnis are aimed not only at the Iraqi armed resistance but at secular,
nationalist Sunni leaders and activists...

The United States Guilty of State Terrorism (1776-2005)
L. Savage
...A terrorist nation can be identified by one particular trait. It issues
orders, demands, and expectations, along with threats to force people or
nations to bow to its will. This is exactly what the U.S. did to Saddam
Hussein 2 years ago, eventually culminating into the U.S. invasion of a
nation at 'peace' with its neighbors and trying avoid war with the United
States. Absolutely nothing Saddam could have done would have stopped this
terrorist na! tion from invading Iraq. The rich white man's government
controlled by conservative fundamentalists had already declared their
illicit and immoral 'noble cause' and sold their wag the dog propaganda to
the people in the U.S...

Martial Law: It’s for the Birds
Kurt Nimmo, Another Day in the Empire
It’s like a scene out of Alfred Hitchcock’s movie, the Birds—or maybe a
scene left on the cutting room floor. Birds are going to get us—not by
attacking us directly, as in the Hitchcock movie, but through the H5N1 bird
flu virus, also known as Avian influenza. According to the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), H5N1 is of the “influenza pandemic”
sort, that is to say it is different from seasonal outbreaks or “epidemics”
of influ! enza. “Seasonal outbreaks are caused by subtypes of influenza
viruses that are already in existence among people, whereas pandemic
outbreaks are caused by new subtypes or by subtypes that have never
circulated among people or that have not circulated among people for a long
time. Past influenza pandemics have led to high levels of illness, death,
social disruption, and economic loss,” the CDC assures us. In other words,
it is the perfect disease for our autocratic rulers, forever angling to get
rid of the barriers (the Constitution and the Bill of Rights) preventing
them from further militarizing our society...

GI Special 3C73: The Enemy From Within - October 5, 2005
www.militaryproject.org
...Many in America want to know why more soldiers don't speak out against
war, and the atrocities from it, if indeed they exist. They do exist, and
soldiers are speaking. Their actions are telling us so much more than their
words ever could. But no one can hear because their voices are being
muffled by those who claim to lead them. No one can hear because the outcry
of these soldiers has been turned off with rhetoric, documents lost ! and
access to the installations cut off for civilians who could make a
difference if they knew the truth...

BUSH'S SUPREME COURT BETRAYAL
Michael Rivero, What Really Happened
When a political party supports a candidate for President, it is done with
the expectation that, should a vacancy occur on the US Supreme Court, said
candidate will appoint judges that embody the political philosophy of his
party. Few actions by a President can have as lasting an effect as the
judges they put onto the court. George Bush has had an exceptional
opportunity to reshape the court, appointing not only a Justice, but a
Chief Justice as w! ell. But Bush has betrayed his own political party with
his selections. Instead of appointing Justices with an eye towards how they
might rule on the issues expected to be brought before the court in the
coming decades, Bush has squandered the vacancies to load up the court with
Justices whose only qualification appears to be that they will protect the
rear-end of their benefactor should that become necessary...

Iraq parliament adopts anti-terror law
Aljazeera.net
Iraq's parliament has adopted a sweeping anti-terror law allowing the death
penalty for perpetrators of terrorist acts, their accomplices or anybody
else involved. Lawmakers said on Tuesday that the law, adopted by a vote of
147 out of 152 MPs present, stipulates eight offences that could qualify as
terrorist acts punishable by death. It defines terrorism as "any criminal
act carried out by one or more persons against the security and stability
of the state an! d/or against persons or groups of persons deliberately or
blindly". The definition also covers those acts aimed at "damaging public
or private assets or of causing terror, fear or panic among the populace"...

Iraq Reverses Much-Derided Election Change
QASSIM ABDUL-ZAHRA, The Associated Press
Iraq's National Assembly voted on Wednesday to reverse last-minute changes
it had made to rules for next week's referendum on a new constitution
following criticism by the United Nations and a boycott threat by the Sunni
minority. After a brief debate and with only about half of its 275 members
present, the assembly voted 119-28 to restore the original voting rules for
the Oct. 15 referendum...

Iraqi Resistance Report for events of Tuesday, 4 October 2005
Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member, editorial board,
the Free Arab Voice. ( http://www.freearabvoice.org )
In a dispatch posted at 9:30pm Mecca time Tuesday night, Mafkarat al-Islam
reported that in the course of the latest US offensive in western Iraqi,
nicknamed “river gate” – an offensive believed to be the biggest US attack
on the Euphrates River valley area – the US is seeking to try to crush the
Resistance to its occupation! of the country. Al-Jazeera satellite TV
quoted an American statement that said that 2,500 US troops were involved
in the “river gate” offensive, backed up by Iraqi puppet army troops.
Al-Jazeera reported that this was in contrast to the American offensive in
the al-Qa’im area, known as “iron fist,” in which American forces refused
to let Iraqi puppet army troops take part, saying that they were not up to
the necessary standard...

battalions prepared to replace U.S. troops...
