US Hawk Admits Iraq War Illegal

War critics astonished as US hawk admits invasion was illegal
“International lawyers and anti-war campaigners reacted with astonishment
yesterday after the influential Pentagon hawk Richard Perle conceded that
the invasion of Iraq had been illegal. In a startling break with the
official White House and Downing Street lines, Mr Perle told an audience in
London: "I think in this case international law stood in the way of doing
the right thing"...

Wolf to Lamb : You're Muddying My Drinking Water
Anwaar Hussain, Fountainhead
In my article "I Am Become Death, The Destroyer Of The Worlds" I had
written the following lines; "The United States went into Afghanistan to
kill or capture Osama Bin Laden. They killed 10,000 innocent Afghans but
could not find their man. They went into Iraq to discover and eliminate
Saddam's WMDs. They killed tens of thousands of Iraqis but found no WMD.
They laid siege to the city of Fallujah to kill or capture Abu Musab
Al-Zarqa! wi. The city and its inhabitants have been blown to smithereens
but there is no Zarqawi. Is it not only too convenient? Next when they want
to attack Pakistan, or Iran, they simply have to say that Bin Laden is
taking refuge there. Just like the next Iraqi city awaiting the fate of
Fallujah will be the latest refuge of Zarqawi; the WMDs too could next fly
to Syria or may be even Saudi Arabia. Is one imagining things here? Or is
it that the US imperialism is indeed now riding full time on the back of
gargantuan lies?" It seems that the by-now-familiar-pattern of
blaming-the-dog-before-hanging-him has started in real earnest in the case
of Iran...an 'original' member of the 'axis of evil'...

Kofi & Condi's Big Iraq Sellout
Fintan Dunne, BreakForNews.com
It's the G8 New World Order! In Brussels on Wednesday 22nd June, at an
international conference on the future of Iraq, U.N. Secretary-General Kofi
Annan, sat down next to U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, to lend
the endorsement of the United Nations to a policy of genocide against the
Sunni of Iraq. It was a historic occasion for the U.N.. Previously accused
of failing to halt genocide, the international body now for the first time
underlined! it's tacit backing for genocidal war crimes in support of
crushing opposition to the colonial takeover of a soverign nation and the
looting of it's national assets...

The Rationale for the Iraq War: Stability of the Region and American
Interests Explained
Thomas J. Ragazzi, Axis of Logic
Continuing to be insufficiently explained to the American public, even
after over two years have passed, is the rationale for the Iraq War. Some
say it was about oil, citing the deals and profits that Halliburton
received in Iraq, others such as President Bush and his administration say
it was the threat that weapons of mass destruction could be developed by
Iraq and given to terrorist groups ! that would attack America, and others
such as Governor Howard Dean say it was a threat only to the region...

Government admits Australian left to languish in US prison in Iraq
Senator Nettle, ICH
In question time today Greens Senator Kerry Nettle raised the plight of
Australian and Adelaide resident Ahmed Aziz Rafiq who has been imprisoned
without charge by US forces in Iraq for over a year. Senator Nettle asked
what the government was doing to arrange his release and why he has had no
consular visits for 11 months only to be told by the Minster for Defence
that "I'll have to seek further advice...when we all come back! in August
I'll able to provide the Senator with an answer"...

Blair's "Minutes" Belies Bush's Motives.
ilyana - ICH
Official documents came into the hands of journalist Michael Smith, through
a protected British source in September 2004. His first article on the
memos were published by his previous employer, The Telegraph *2 beginning
Sept 19, 2004. For reasons, I have yet to fathom, this story was not picked
up in the US until nearly nine months later, following the London Sunday
Times' publication of the "Downing Street Memo" (DSM) on May First, 2005.
This was a politica! l pregnant pause. It would have been a boon to those
who wanted an administration change in the USA, or who were undecided about
their presidential choice, if the Minutes had emerged before the November
2004 elections...

U.S. doctors linked to POW `torture'
TANYA TALAGA AND KAREN PALMER, The Star
Medical records compiled by doctors caring for prisoners at the U.S.
detention camp at Guantanamo Bay are being tapped to design more effective
interrogation techniques, says an explosive new report (...) The British
medical journal The Lancet reported in August, 2004, that U.S. military
doctors violated medical ethics as part of the interrogation regime at
Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison. "Not only were (they) aware of human rights
abuses, th! ey were actually complicit in them," University of Minnesota
professor Steven Miles, who wrote the report, told the Toronto Star's
Sandro Contenta...

The first, not the last throes
Pepe Escobar
...Iraq has also been the new Vietnam since the day the resistance was
born, April 18, 2003, in front of the Abu Hanifa mosque in Baghdad. Iraq as
the new Vietnam replays - in a new setting - the movie of a superpower
being subdued by a guerrilla war. Remember former Iraqi deputy prime
minister Tariq Aziz's famous words before the invasion: "Let the desert be
our jungles." A mini-Tet offensive happened in Baghdad on Monday. In a city
allegedly under the control of Amer! ican and American-trained Iraqi
forces, more than 100 guerrillas mounted a devastating attack on Baya'a,
the biggest police station in Baghdad - employing successive waves of
mortars, explosions, rocket-launcher attacks, hand grenades, sophisticated
diversionary tactics and the sinister icing on the lethal cake, car
bombings...

submitted her resignation to the then-Secretary of State, Colin Powell. A
distinguished career diplomat for the U.S. government for over 16 years,
with 29 years of honorable service in the US Army/Army Reserves, as well,
she “disagreed with starting a war with Iraq without the authorization of

The War Before The War
John Prados, Tompaine.com
The now-notorious Downing Street memos make it necessary to reframe the
story of the aerial operations that took place before the war, with
significant new conclusions emerging. It now appears that the United
States, dragging a reluctant Great Britain behind it, executed a
deliberate, purposeful bombing campaign against Saddam Hussein's Iraq
beginning in May 2002. Among the Downing Street memos are British
government legal briefs written immediately before May 2002! finding that
these air operations had no basis in international law and constituted
aggressive acts. In other words, Bush initiated hostilities a full 10
months before the Bush administration determined that all diplomatic means
had been exhausted and six months before Congressional approval for the use
of force...

“Missing Person!” - Newsworthy? Not at all.
Jesse, Editor TVNewsLIES.org
...In contrast not a single minute of the most important hearing held on
the Iraq war, the Downing Street Memo hearing, was aired. If this meeting
was ever mentioned it was not noticeable. Anyone who watched 40 hours of
news this week on these networks learned every single detail about the
missing boy and about the missing woman in Aruba, but they would not know
that the Downing Street Memo hearings were held and they would not have
learned ! the stunning revelations about the Bush administration and the
lies that took this nation to war. Nor would they have learned how the Bush
administration has forced the G8 nations to take part in their global
environmental terror policies that will undoubtedly lead to more deaths
than any brown terrorists can be blamed for...

The Downing Street Fixation
Fixing to Fix "Fixed"
RAY McGOVERN, Former CIA Analyst -CounterPunch
The Downing Street papers are proving a formidable challenge to the White
House PR machine as it desperately tries—in often-ludicrous ways—to slow
down a train that has already left the station. And interest continues to
build. The leaked British documents are now on the top-ten list of Google
queries. One huge fly in the ointment for the administration was British
Prime Minister Tony Blair’s early decision ! that it would be a fool’s
errand to challenge the authenticity of the papers...

Another Year of Living Misery in Baghdad
Residents Face 'So Many Problems'
Andy Mosher and Bassam Sebti, Washington Post Foreign Service
...And with the temperature exceeding 100 degrees, as it has every day for
weeks, people voiced anger at the prospect of spending their third summer
since the U.S.-led invasion with only intermittent electricity. Those with
generators will be able to power air conditioners and other appliances; the
rest will simply bake. "So many problems are happening in the c! ity," said
Mohammed Sarhan, 50, a grocer in the southern Baghdad neighborhood of Dora.
"Where do I start -- water, electricity, security, unemployment or health?"
"This is not a life," Sarhan added. "This is hell"...

Blame Game: Reality Sinks in Bushzarro World
Kurt Nimmo, Another Day in the Empire
According to a Rasmussen Reports survey, nearly half “of Americans say that
President Bush is more responsible for starting the War with Iraq than
Saddam Hussein.” In other words, half of the Americans polled in this
survey (and so-called public opinion polls are highly suspect) have finally
bothered to notice what has been obvious for a couple years now: Bush
invaded Iraq on false pretense, in other words he told a pile of lies. R!
asmussen, of course, did not take the poll to the next level and ask people
what should happen when a president betrays the trust of the American
people (and kills their kids and squanders billions of dollars of their
money to say nothing of killing thousands heaped upon thousands of
Iraqis)...

Yes, Virginia, there really are government conspiracies!
Michael Rivero, What Really Happened
Dear Editor--I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there are no
government conspiracies. Papa says, 'If you see it in What Really Happened,
it's so.'Please tell me the truth, are their government conspiracies?
Virginia Virginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected
by the induced blindness of the mainstream media. They do not believe
except they see it on television or hear it over the r! adio. They think
that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. Yes,
Virginia, there are government conspiracies. They exist as certainly as
greed and ambition and lust for power exist. At the present time and for
all to see, some of the highest officials of this land have agreed upon the
telling of a lie...

Child Abuse
Chris Floyd, The Moscow Times
...So when leading international agencies -- including the World Bank, now
headed by one of the chief liars, Paul Wolfowitz -- find that Iraq's
children are dwindling and dying twice as fast under the coalition's
benevolent care than under the despotism of Saddam Hussein, we should not
conclude that this was the liars' conscious intention. Yes, it's true that
Iraq's child malnutrition rate is now worse than the broken nations of
Uganda or Haiti, as the Japan Times reports! . Yes, cholera and typhoid are
cutting swaths through the population, with especial virulence in the
"stable" areas of the Shiite south. Yes, epidemics of hepatitis are killing
pregnant women (...)And yes, it's true that Iraq -- once a modern and
prosperous nation -- has suffered "one of the most dramatic declines in
human welfare in recent history" during the occupation, as the UN says. But
again, this was not part of the liars' deliberate design. The torment of
children was outside the parameters of their "metrics of success." It was
not a factor one way or the other...

Iraqi troops against Iran
Xymphora
Gorilla in the Room notices a wild quote from Leslie Gelb, president of the
Council on Foreign Relations, in an article in the Boston Globe: "In a
report to the council, Gelb was scathing about America efforts to train an
Iraqi army. 'If you ask any Iraqi leader, they will tell you these people
can't fight. They just aren't trained. And yet we're cranking them out like
rabbits.' As for plans to train a 10 division Iraqi army by next year, Gelb
was scathing. 'It became! very apparent to me that these 10 divisions were
to fight some future war against Iran. It had nothing to do, nothing to
do,' with taking Iraq over from the Americans and fighting the insurgents."
