Britain has urged Nato to hold nuclear war games as the threat from
Russia intensifies, it can be revealed.____

Ministers are examining proposals which could see the UK’s Trident
nuclear deterrent deployed alongside other nations for the first
    time since the Cold War.____

Forces from across the Alliance would exercise thousands of troops,
aircraft and ships which would then play into a scenario which ramps
up into a world war resulting in nuclear disaster.____

Such a move would send a strong signal to Vladimir Putin that the 28
member states are prepared for a significant escalation of the
    conflict in Syria and beyond.____

Speaking at the defence ministerial summit at Nato headquarters in
Brussels, Defence Secretary Michael Fallon told the Mail: ‘We have
to know how they fit together, nuclear and conventional.’____

    __ __

His comments echoed those of Sir Adam Thomson, the UK ambassador to
Nato, who revealed nuclear war games were on the agenda. He said it
was a ‘recommendation being looked at’ as a means of strengthening
    deterrence.____

Sir Adam said: ‘Since the end of the Cold War, Nato’s done
conventional exercising and nuclear exercising both, but not
exercised the transition from one to the other, so that is under
    consideration.’____

The UK has four Vanguard-class submarines, armed with 16 ballistic
missiles in total. It has not test-fired the warheads since 2012.____

Putin on the other hand has flexed Russia’s military muscle by
test-launching its ballistic missiles from one of its submarines as
    recently as last year.____

Up until now Nato has held conventional war games involving tens of
thousands of troops in a combat situation, creating a scenario by an
invading ground force, attack planes or warships.____

    Full-scale war scenario ____

Nuclear exercises have been restricted to ‘table-top’ exercises, in
which strategy has been discussed but not implemented in a
    full-scale war scenario.____

Nuclear war games would likely involve discussions on what would
happen if Nato countries were wiped out by their enemies.____

Enemy ballistic missiles – which can hit a target as far as 10,000
miles – could reach the UK within minutes. Among the Nato member
states, only the US, France and Britain have nuclear weapons.____

Britain has prepared contingency measures but such nuclear exercises
could see Nato allies discussing how the Allies would respond as a
    whole force.____

The future of Britain’s nuclear deterrent was recently brought into
question by new Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, who said he would never
    authorise the use of Trident.____
