[177] Global Business Council on HIV/AIDS Awards 1999

Recognising the business response to HIV and AIDS

The purpose of the Awards
The Global Business Council on HIV/AIDS exists to encourage business participation in the fight against the HIV epidemic and its effects, especially through meaningful partnerships with public sector and NGOs. The Council has instituted these awards in order to:
* give international recognition to the valuable contribution made by business to the fight against HIV/AIDS
* identify and promote the best of these as models of good practice.

The scope of the Awards
The Global Business Council welcomes entries from businesses that have responded to HIV and AIDS in one or more of the following ways:
* raising awareness among your workforce, other stakeholders and the communities where the business operates
* programmes that support people with HIV and AIDS at work and prevent discrimination
* involvement with local, national or international efforts to counter HIV/AIDS and alleviate the impact of the epidemic
* helping to fund-raise for HIV and AIDS initiatives
* recognising the importance of children and young people and involving them in your response.

Who can enter
The Awards are made to businesses in the private sector only. Applications will be considered regardless of the size of company or project. The judges hope to see entries from all parts of the world.

Entries should concern projects that were running at some point during the period 1 January 1998 to 31 August 1999. All entries must be received by Monday 6 September 1999.

Public sector organisations (including NGOs) are encouraged to submit nominations, but the final entry should be made by the company itself. Entries concerning partnerships will be expected to offer references from the public and/or NGO partners.

The judges' criteria
The judging panel will be led by members of the Global Business Council with representatives of UNAIDS and HIV organisations. In the case of each programme entered the judges will consider why it was initiated, how it was approached and what it achieved. Entries should show:
* a clear rationale for the company's involvement and the project as a whole
* evidence of, or evaluation of a benefit for the targeted community
* any attempts to sustain and/or share the benefits or learning.

Entries should contain the information requested in the Entry Form (which may be obtained from the web site below) and may be supported by relevant documents (examples of materials used, copies of policies, etc.). Entries should be submitted in English. Additional information may be requested by the judges if necessary.
