UGANDA's BISHOPS DEMAND UPDF PULL-OUT
By Eric Lakidi, The New Vision, Uganda

CATHOLIC bishops have demanded the immediate withdrawal of the UPDF and Rwandan Patriotic Army (RPA) from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
This was revealed yesterday by Cardinal Emmanuel Wamala, the head of the Catholic Church, at his residence in Rubaga, Kampala.
The bishops deplored the armed conflicts going on within and outside Uganda.
They condemned the fighting in Kisangani between the former allies, UPDF and RPA, which they said had claimed innocent lives and destroyed property.
The Cardinal said the bishops had joined the Pope Paul II, the United Nations and all concerned people in the world to condemn the UPDF and RPA presence in the DRC. Wamala said, " We strongly call upon the civil and military leaders involved in this useless waste of life to restrain and commit themselves to a quick settlement through peaceful means. "
Uganda and Rwanda should leave Congo. Why should they fight in Kisangani ? " If Uganda wants to fight Rwanda, let it go to Rwanda not Congo ", Wamala said.
Wamala expressed disappointment over his wasted effort to bring President Yoweri Museveni and Rwandan president Paul Kagame to talk peace. He also blamed the MPs who advocated for the removal of all Rwandese from the army and other organs, saying Rwanda and Uganda share a common destiny. Ends
